Scenes from the dry lands while rain was coming down on the Cascades and Western Washington. It’s almost always worth the effort to go drive further east to avoid the rain and even get some sunshine! It was the perfect day for a wildflower hike with weather that’s just the right temperature, though on the chilly side. I had originally planned a different hike but last minute changed to here and it was such a good choice! Flowers are still starting to bloom around the 3000ft elevation but many around the 1500 ft elevation are done blooming especially ones with sunlight. I spent a dreamy afternoon painting at the top of Tom McCall point. This is my first ever en plein air painting and it was such a fun challenge! I’m not used to working with changing light conditions, bugs, wind, and hot sun but it was all worth it to spend time doing my favorite thing in an absolutely gorgeous place. It’s certainly not my favorite painting I’ve done, but it was a great experience and I love that I have the painting to remember the day. Balsamroot and red clover in the mountains overlooking the Rogue River, Oregon 🏞️🌼🌸 Good morning yall! It's been a while since I posted in the am. And, I'm just as stunned as you probably are at this shot. It's so so rare to find these scenes in Southern Oregon, but in the mountains hides some treasures and I found some! This iconic spot I drive by often and never noticed them until I really was looking with my other half this last weekend. We noticed some yellow up way at the top from the road and I made an exploratatory hike to the top. I was so pleasantly surprised to find the balsamroot, as we were just trying to find fields of clover and other wildflowers. Then sitting behind this patch I was able to frame in the river and the bridge. Native Americans used the plant to create antiseptic with its sticky sap and apply it to wounds. The sap is so strong though it tastes of pine making not very palatable, but it is edible and very nutritious! Some roots have been known to have been dried and turned into flower by Native Americans as well. Next on the forecast is some wild lupine fields we also found so keep an eye open for that this next or following Friday! Some flowers at twilight! A bit of a tonal contrast from the sunburst one. Which one do you prefer? On the technical side, this is an image that I'm rarely able to make. The closest flower is mere inches from the front of my lens, meaning I need to do a "focus stack", or combine multiple images taken at different focus points in order to get sharp focus through the entire image. This was a 5 frame focus stack. The difficulty usually arises when there is any movement in the scene. Even the slightest breeze will cause the flowers to sway and makes combining the frames a huge challenge. Additionally, the light was so low here that each exposure was over a second long which would have made it impossible to get a sharp image if there was any movement in the flowers at all. Thankfully it was completely calm this evening which allowed me to get this shot. When the sky gets in on the wildflower bloom also.🌼🌅 — My schedule hasn’t quite worked out as well for getting out on nice days for the gorge wildflowers. Because of that, I got pretty excited seeing a promising morning in the forecast last week. Despite being fleeting, I must say, it was even better than I expected. Fantastic color and the clouds were nice and smooth, like lenticulars. Only downside, the wind was something else. Not only did I not dress quite warm enough, the flowers were swinging all around.
