💫5 ways to set dogs up for success when welcoming a baby💫 Get this process started as early as you can to allow for optimal success: 1. Learn to identify canine stress signals and predatory behaviours 2. Use baby gates to create safe barriers throughout the house. If your dog is used to sleeping in main bedroom slowly transition their bed onto the landing so they can be behind a baby gate at night. This should be done by moving the bed a a few cm across the room slowly towards the door. Make use of enrichment sessions to gradually prepare them for spending time alone behind a baby gate. The closing of the gate can then be built up over time. 3. Mix up their routine. Lower exercise expectations by slowly decreasing your regular walks by 5 minutes, 10 minutes etc then incorporate alternative activities in place of a single walk such as low impact scent work, enrichment or settle work training. Even with the best intentions their exercise will decrease as pregnancy progresses and baby arrives. Start to include the pram on walks, If you know your dog will struggle with movement of the pram increase this slowly in the house by slight movement followed by high value reinforcement. Vary their meal times slightly 5 mins early or 5 mins late, 10 mins early or 10 mins late. This will help to prevent stress and frustration build up if you are preoccupied with baby at meal times. Gradually increase the amount of visitors into the home,depending on your dog’s needs. 4. Start setting up furniture and equipment as soon as they arrive. Allow your dog to interact with the items and reinforce for calm behaviour. 5. Introduce baby cries by playing low level cry’s (these sounds can be found on YouTube) while they partake in self soothing calming activities such as snuffle mats or Kong. Increase the volume slowly over an extended period of time. I am super happy to share a great post from KAD approved professional Sophie Calder! 'Is it safe to let your dog on the sofa with a child? - No, unless there is a parent between the child and the dog actively supervising. I trust my dog with my life and she is more likely to run away from a chicken than chase it 😂 but I would never put her in a comprising position or set her up to fail. It just takes ONE accident and its the dogs' fault.... Do all dog have teeth? YES! SO ANY DOG CAN BITE. Yes even that 'wouldn't harm a fly dog' can still bite if put in a position they feel they have to defend themselves. My top tips: -Teach your dog the on and off command so they only come on the sofa when you ask them to. -Make sure if they do join you on the sofa you give them space. You will build a stronger bond of trust with your dog if you do! -Teach your dog to lie down by the sofa when you're on it or to relax on their bed. When you do have little guests round this is purely for safety not dominance. (Please note the 'dominance theory' is very outdated and research since supports this!) -If you practice this when you don't have guests, your dog will think this is normal behaviour and won't feel left out. -Always keep your child HIGHER than your dog. Never let your dog peer down on your child or stand over them while changing them. It just takes one second for your dog to step on your baby or squash it. An issue often parents have when adopting a dog is that they underestimate the work that goes into bringing a dog into their family. 🏡 One of the reasons they feel this way is because they had dogs their whole life, so they think they know what to do, even when it came to their dog and kids living together.🐾 Then, something doesn't go as planned, or the dog reacted in an unexpected way, or the children are not listening when told not to annoy the dog, they are surprised and call us. ☎️📱 Honestly, this is not unusual, so if this is you, don't feel bad. However, I recommend to be pro-active and prepare yourself, the kids, the house, everything for the arrival of your puppy. 🐶 Obviously, I recommend calling a KAD Approved Professional in, and while you wait for that first session, why not jot down on a piece of paper the answer to a rather simple question, but that can make a massive difference to the life you are going to have with your dog: 'What kind of lifestyle do you have?' Is it rather chilled? 😎Or are you weekend-mountain-climbers? 🧗♂️ Is your house fairly calm, even considering you have kids? Or is it very busy and you have visitors every 2 minutes? Many things in life are a matter of perspective... However, some things are less 'philosophical' and more realistic, especially when it comes to kids snd dogs. The poster in this photo was used to show how easily kids can get themselves in very dangerous situations simply because their brain isn't developed enough to see danger. The same thing can be said about dogs. So, preventing anything bad from happening is always key, and we can do that by thinking ahead, managing things well, by actively supervising all interactions between kids and dogs and learning canine body language. At KAD we don't only work with dogs to make sure they can have a great life in a world with children, but we also work with kids, to make sure they learn to understand and respect dogs. One of the most important thing to learn about what we do is to be as patient and as caring with kids as we are with dogs! Some children might need more time to understand a concept, other kids might need different wordings; some children are more the 'visual' kind, while others learn better from listening only. Some kids are really little, while others are almost as tall as we are (or taller!!)... So, your baby is home… and you quickly realise that all a newborn does is feeding, pooping, sleeping and crying. Generally they cry because they need feeding, or their nappy is dirty or they are tired. And, of course, they need you… your love, your warmth, your comfort. What about your dog? She had your love, warmth, comfort way before the baby showed up! And your dog still needs the same thing the baby needs: food, toilet time, sleeping, and general enrichment and play. It can feel rather overwhelming keeping up with the dog’s needs and the baby. Firstly, please know that it’s completely normal to feel overwhelmed. Accept that, don’t duel on it… My best advice is to ask for help… friends, family, whoever offers or not, reach out, and get help. Then, put stuff into place to make sure the dog is having fun and you can care for your baby, with having to worry about amusing the dog too much. Here you see Rusty enjoying a WEST PAW toy (could also be Kong or similar), while mum is caring for her baby behind a playpen (playpens are awesome because they double as long gates too, you can get them from Tesco, Argos, John Lewis, etc). That way, Rusty has the run of the house and can amuse himself more, while mum and baby only need limited space at first. And if mum & baby have a little nap, it’s all good… the dog is divided by the playpen and can’t reach the baby or mum. Management of your environment is key at all times!! I love our KAD approved professionals, do you know why? Oh gosh, sooo many reasons, but one of them, which is a big one, is that they talk the talk and walk the walk!! Here is an example from the lovely Sophie Calder from Calders Pet Services: Sophie is a dog trainer and, recently, has become a mum to gorgeous boy, Archie. Sophie is also mum to Shadow, the stunning GSD in the photo. Sophie worked during her pregnancy to prepare Shadow for the arrival of Archie. So, as her bump grew, so did Shadow’s understanding of the new items appearing around the house, the changes in the environment, routines, attentions, etc. Sophie did such a good job that not only she got praised by the midwife doing house visits; but her husband James told her he was (extra) lucky to have her in his life (I’d say!! Lol). - but also a bug well done to James, mostly for listening to his wife (lol), but also for working together: parenting is a partnership for sure. Life with a baby, especially the first one, changes completely, whether you like it or not… and no matter how much you are determined not to… it just does. So, rather than fight it, be prepared… so you can fully embrace becoming a parent to a human, while still being a parent to your doggy.
