What do you all think about onbuhimos? This is a Japanese style carrier that I hadn't even heard of a year ago, but recently, I was lucky enough to be able to test one! In Japanese, "onbu" means to back carry, and "himo" means strap or rope. The lack of waist belt means that they are a great option to wear while pregnant, as there is no pressure on the abdomen, and are also great for quick ups, as there is little to clip or tie. Furthermore, they use less fabric and pack down really small, so they're great to have in a bag just in case. I had never used one before, so wasn't sure what to expect, and I had heard that they can be a little "shoulder heavy". But I was quite surprised, having baby higher, the distribution of the weight was completely different, and it was much more manageable than I thought. After all, the structure is not too dissimilar to a backpack, which also doesn't have a waist belt! Being able to breastfeed in your carrier makes your feel a bit like a super hero! You can meet your babies needs on the go and its often a discreet way of feeding in public. To feed in your carrier start by loosening the shoulder straps and the waistband, Wiggle the waistband lower and scoot baby slightly to one side if needed. Lift your breast to baby's mouth. Once baby has finished return baby to original position and tighten all the straps. Its not completely hands free but will take the strain off your arms Just remember they are two skills that need to be mastered individually first before you combine them. People have been loving the hybrid nature of our consultancy courses - it works so well to build up knowledge and skills over a period of time. And having two trainers per course also means there’s a lot of hands-on support for the in-person learning! “It was nice to spread some of the practical learning out over those few weeks as I think it could have been quite overwhelming to have tried to fit all of that into the weekend. Amazing to get so much one-to-one practice in, to feel and experience such a wide range of carriers etc. Because of the small group we got lots of chances to practise and watch each other too. I definitely met all my personal goals and then some. I feel really happy with what I learned and feel confident to support families going forward.” Hurrah!
