My fave new parenthood emotion emoji is this: 😵‍💫 lol There ain’t no hood like PARENTHOOD I’ll tell you that! It literally sling shots you into a juicy little cocktail of EMOTIONS - often a few opposite emotions at the same dang time 😜🎢 (but dont be scared- its great! LOL) The deepest amount of love and also the deepest amount of what the heck. Lol I came across this art by @themayfairgroup and I love it, especially the small print that says you gotta feel it to HEAL it and you wont feel like this forever. No toxic positivity here 🙅🏽‍♀️ but also, there IS a lot of positivity here! I LOVE my babies gosh I could cry right now because they are little slices of heaven and they are my WORLD Im so grateful for them and obsessed with them literally they amaze me and they teach me so much ahhh 🥹 and also: 😵‍💫😵‍💫😵‍💫😂😂 Don’t think that I didn’t just hand my baby on over to my hubby and say okayyyyy Im done right nowww 🤪😅 You guys- NOBODY has this figured out first of all. A few weeks ago, I found myself rage-scrolling the feed of a very popular sleep training account with a huge following. While I am well aware of the tactics used by many sleep trainers, I was totally taken aback and completely appalled by this person’s language and content. I found it to be insensitive and downright offensive in so many ways, particularly how they singled out parents with posts like “5 big mistakes you’re making at bedtime” and placing so much blame in general on tired, desperate parents. SO I decided to be somewhat snarky (I’ll keep it professional!) and make a post about some of the biggest mistakes that sleep trainers, and the big ole sleep training industry as a whole, tend to make. This post is not an attack on parents who have chosen to sleep train. Just as with any of my sleep training content- you are welcome to skip right over it if it’s triggering or upsetting to you. 💫 Melatonin is our sleepy hormone that raises after dusk and throughout the night peaking until 4am 💫 As it starts to decrease and stops at dawn when sunlight enters the brain, even when our eyes are closed! At this time and our daytime hormone cortisol starts to raise and is highest in the morning 💫 Darkness can help the production of melatonin and is one of the reasons I recommend black out blinds for naps and overnight. Especially to stop any light come in during the early morning, due to these hormones it's a lot harder to settle a little one at this time 💫 An orange night light is the best colour light to have as it is less likely to stop the production of melatonin than other colours. When you little one is waking frequently through the night making it can be so hard to know what to do to get more sleep as you just feel so exhausted.⁠ ⁠ You don't have the head space to make a plan or even the energy to do anything different.⁠ ⁠ Do you feel like this?⁠ ⁠ Before joining the The Good Night Sleep System, Holly was feeling exactly like this. Her little one Theo (15 months) was waking frequently through the night and would only be settled by her with feeding. However, understanding the different sleep states of newborns, along with their wake windows and recommended sleep durations, can help parents navigate this crucial aspect of early parenthood more confidently. Active vs. Quiet Sleep: 🌙💤 Newborns experience two primary states of sleep: active sleep and quiet sleep. Many parents are wondering this! We all know that babies wake in the night but when is waking not normal?⁠ ⁠ If your baby is waking very frequently, it's always worth checking if they have any sleep red flags.⁠ ⁠ This is something I screen all my families for. As a pharmacist and having lots of experience in supporting families with wakeful babies, I am often able to detect when signs and symptoms do not seem right and warrant further investigation.⁠ ⁠ Many families I have worked with have previously worked with sleep coaches who have never even looked at possible red flags. Some have even been in contact with health professionals but have been dismissed or fobbed off. ⁠ ⁠ It's sad how often this happens. If there is an underlying issues that is disrupting sleep, there is absolutely no point working on sleep until this has been addressed.⁠ ⁠ Not every baby will have issues and the majority do not but it's always best to check this first. If there are no red flags, there is so much we can do to improve sleep. Sometimes just by optimising routines and the timing of sleep, the night waking will improve. Early morning wakeups are HARD! No one wants to be up at the crack of dawn. I consider any wakes prior to 6am early and we want to treat those wakes like night-time wakes. ​​​​​​​​ Here are 5 of the common solutions for early morning wakeups: ​​​​​​​​ 👉 Overtiredness​​​​​​​​ - this is probably the most common explanation for early morning wake-ups. If your little one is overtired from poor naps or night wakes, we want to address this (we can do this together via a Phone Consult). 👉 So often we think a later bedtime will mean a later start but it's quite the opposite. Bring that bedtime earlier, even by 15 minutes if your little one wakes before 6am​​​​​​​. 👉 Ensure the first nap of the day isn't too early. This is tricky, if your little ones have woken super early it's often a battle to keep them awake till their first nap time! But if this first nap creeps too early (before 9am) then this will keep reinforcing these early wakes!​​​​​​​​ 👉 Ensure the room is pitch black, just a tiny bit of light creeping through the curtain rail or under the door is enough to trigger the brain to wake up. 👉 Make sure there are no external noises waking them at this time (like a bird chirping or a shift working neighbor leaving early!)​​​​​​​. ​​​​​​​​ If you've found this helpful, tag and share with your friends! 💛WEANING & SLEEP💛 Weaning can significantly impact our little one’s sleep patterns and behaviours. 💛 Digestive Strain: One contributing factor is the affect that it has on their digestive system during the transition to solid foods. Introducing solids provides new food groups that the baby’s digestive system may not be accustomed to processing. This can often cause temporary digestive discomfort (gas, bloating, or constipation), which in turn can cause restlessness, and disruptive nights and day naps. 💛 Change in Nutrient Composition: A baby’s milk often provides a consistent and easily digestible source of nutrition for babies. When solid foods are introduced, the nutrient composition of their diet changes which can impact how their bodies process and absorb nutrients. 💛Timing of Feeds: As babies transition to solids, the timings and frequency of their feeds may change. Similarly, solid foods will take longer for their bodies to digest, and therefore it is recommended to leave sufficient time between meals before expecting your baby to go down easily to bed. 💛Comfort and Routine: Breastfeeding or bottle-feeding often serves as a comfort and bonding activity for babies. Weaning can disrupt this process, leading to resistance to sleep or difficulty settling down without the familiar soothing sensation of a feed. To help minimize the impact of weaning on sleep, you can: 💛 Introduce solid foods gradually, starting with easily digestible options 💛Keep a food diary and pay attention to signs of digestive discomfort, so that you can adjust your little one’s diet accordingly 💛Continue winding and use baby tummy massage techniques where necessary to support signs of discomfort 💛Offer additional comfort and reassurance to help your little one feel secure and supported 💛Maintain a consistent sleep routine to provide predictability and stability during the transition By being attentive to your baby’s needs throughout the day, you can ensure your child is as comfortable as possible, whilst supporting and minimising disruptions to their sleep. ✨ Early bedtimes ✨ I'm a huge fan of an early bedtime when needed to help our kids to not get overtired which can lead to a rise in cortisol and in turn often means night wakes and early starts. 〰️ If you have a little one who is waking pre 6am (on a 7-7 routine) the first thing I would try would is an early bedtime, as early as 6pm and give it a week or so to try and get back some of the sleep deficit before deciding whether it's helping the early wake 〰️ If your child has skipped a nap, like my 2 year old most of last week at nursery then an early bedtime is the best thing you can do to give them the best chance of a good nights sleep. Safety first! How do you ensure your baby is safe for sleep? 👉 Always put your baby down for sleep in an empty crib. Not in your arms, not on a DockaTot. Nothing but a tight fitting crib sheet. 👉 If your baby is starting to roll, time to ditch the swaddle and let your baby get comfortable and find their hands. 👉 Weighted sleep sacks are not safe, don’t use them. 👉 Don’t put your baby down in your bed surrounded by pillows and blankets. 👉 Have a good quality video monitor.
