Spent this beautiful day outside and hiking and exploring the closest park to our house @jeanlafittenps . The Barataria Preserve part of the park is 30 min from our house and we checked out a few trails. We saw turtles, an alligator, a small snake, a skink and a few birds. Heard a woodpecker and saw beautiful wild flowers. Avery earned her 3 Junior Ranger badge. #natlparktrippers #NationalPark #nps #GoParks #AmericasBestIdea #NationalParks #FindYourPark #Explore #GetOut #Travel #QuickGetAway #usinterior #nationalparkgeek #usparksandmonuments #optoutside #NPFans #Nationalparkobsessed #nationalparkpassport #nationalparkservice #nationalparksigns #jeanlafittenps #jeanlafittebaratariapreserve #baratariapreserve #hikingwithkids #familyfun #swamp #juniorranger #juniorrangerbadge

🌿 Explore Barataria Preserve 🐾 Swipe for the aftermath of the gator's attack... And, discover the vibrant wildlife and untamed beauty in these southern wetlands. Each moment is a unique story. #BaratariaPreserve showcases nature's enchantment. 🕸️ This huge spider is the Nephila Clavipes, the Golden Silk Orb-Weaver: This remarkable arachnid is a true artist of the wetlands. Known for spinning one of the strongest and most beautiful types of silk, its web glimmers like gold in the sunlight. Not just a pretty sight, this silk is incredibly strong, used to capture a variety of prey. The silk of T. clavipes has the potential to aid in surgeries involving the nervous system, a capability which has been demonstrated in past experimental studies. Its DNA has been completely annotated, revealing 28 different spider silk proteins! 🦗 Eastern Lubber Grasshopper, aka the "Diablo" or "Black Diablo": This striking creature is more than just an eye-catcher with its vibrant colors. It's a master of defense, sporting semi-toxicity that's boldly advertised by its vivid hues. And size matters here – it's impressively large, deterring most predators from even attempting a catch. A true behemoth in the insect world, the Diablo is as fascinating as it is formidable! 🐊 American Alligator - The Bayou's Ancient Guardian: Meet the alligator mississippiensis, an awe-inspiring relic of prehistoric times, ruling the Southeastern U.S. waters. This colossal predator, often reaching lengths of over 15 feet, is an engineering marvel of nature. Not just fearsome hunters, these gators are ecosystem architects, creating 'alligator holes' that become crucial habitats for other species. They bellow in a deep, resonant tone that seems to echo from the dinosaur era, and their remarkable role in their habitat has made them a key species in conservation efforts, symbolizing successful wildlife management. Witnessing these majestic creatures is like stepping back in time, a reminder of the wild heart that beats strong in the American South.

*sound on!* So we went to this nature preserve that has a boardwalk through the swamp and there are alligators and everything. Ita kind of chilly down here, so we got to the end and had only seen a lizard and a squirrel. Then. Out of nowhere, this older fellow with an umbrella comes running down the boardwalk and asks (in a thick but understandable Cajun accent) if we've seen the gators and we said no. I swear to jeebus, dude made some noises and this alligator came out from under the boardwalk where we were standing. It was awesome and low key terrifying . Then after a bit, the dude ran off with his umbrella and we didn't see him again. We are convinced he went back into the swamp from whence he came 🤣🤣🤣 #baratariapreserve #Louisiana #alligator

It's hatchling (baby alligator) season! While hatchlings are cute and unassuming, their mothers are not. If you encounter a hatchling, know that there is a mama alligator nearby whether you see her or not. Like all good mamas, alligators are protective of their young and may be extra defensive and territorial around people. Always keep a safe distance from mother alligators and their hatchlings. 📷: Gina Lloyd Alt Text: A baby alligator lays on wet soil with small, bright green vegetation leaves. #JeanLafitteNPS #NationalParkService #BaratariaPreserve #KeepWildlifeWild

Jessica Padilla of New Orleans, LA, shares these photos from the Barataria Preserve’s Visitor Center Trail on July 3, 2023. "My husband and I have always enjoyed the nature you can find in your own state. We took a partial day trip to the Barataria Preserve to walk the trail and see what was out and what was growing. We saw several insects, arachnids, an alligator, a water snake, gator trails, blooming wildflowers - an all around nice glimpse of the bayou. My husband caught the eyes of this frog while on the trail, and it was our favorite find of the day. Its camouflage was perfect.” (Photos courtesy of Jessica Padilla @the_bestica_jessica. The Barataria Beauties nursery has 20,000 new Babies on Board⚠️ We’ll raise them into the gorgeous deep cup oysters you see at @vestallaf @spoonbill.lafayette and @fives.bar Our Triploid oysters are hand raised (tumbled) throughout their life to create a shell with the perfect petite cup. This means our oysters grow down instead of just spreading flat. We find it to be a more enjoyable and elegant raw oyster experience and a more beautiful presentation. #babyoysters #aquaculture #grandislelouisiana #baratariapreserve

If you're visiting the Barataria Preserve this weekend, July 22nd and 23rd, you may hear some strange noises that sound like explosions. If you think that's what you're hearing, you'd be correct. Entergy will be demolishing several old and damaged structures as part of their effort to rebuild the Golden Meadow - Barataria Transmission Line. While it is possible to hear faint explosions from Barataria Preserve Visitor Center, public trails, and other nearby areas, it is unlikely you'll hear anything. Giorno 16 - Louisiana: New Orleans Che giornata PAZZESCA! #neworleans #nola #louisiana #baratariapreserve #nps

Taylor Crenshaw of Olympia, Washington, shares these photos from the Barataria Preserve’s Visitor Center Trail on May 28, 2023. "It was my husband’s and my first time in Louisiana, and I’d never been to a swamp or bayou or even seen that much Spanish moss, for that matter, so the park was a must for me. It was even cooler that we saw two alligators on the trails. I’d never been that close to one in its natural environment!” (Photo courtesy of Taylor Crenshaw @exploredbytaylor. Used with permission.) Michael and Stacey Collodi of Carrollton, TX, share these photos from Chalmette Battlefield and Barataria Preserve on June 18, 2023. “We enjoyed exploring the Barataria Preserve in the morning, hiking trails like the Visitor Center trail and the Bayou Coquille trail. We are HUGE fans of National Park sites and have a life goal of visiting all 424 (plus whatever is added in the future). Jean Lafitte was #157 on my list. Hiking is one of our favorite activities at NPS sites. We like to explore actively. It is a way to satisfy my curiosity, craving for adventure, and desire to be a continual learner. Despite the hot, muggy day, we had a great time that morning. In the afternoon, we visited Chalmette Battlefield. I consider myself an American history buff, but I know very little about the War of 1812 and the Battle of New Orleans beyond it being Andrew Jackson’s claim to fame. I didn’t realize the battle was over so quickly. We will return to visit the three Cultural Centers when their open days/times coordinate with our schedule!” (Photos courtesy of Michael Collodi @mikecollodi. Used with permission.)
