New Orleans: Day 2. To the bayou! Spent the morning exploring the curving waterways and seeing SO. MANY. GATORS! And a massive snapping turtle, too. After the tour, we headed downtown to enjoy the French Quarter Fest - so many stages scattered all around downtown, tons of delicious food, and discovered a fantastic Cajun Pop band thanks to Jennie! Ended the night in the cemeteries on our Nola Ghost Riders tour. Walking the wooden boardwalks with their squishy spots and weather warping while searching the bare trees for the warblers and wrens we were hearing was much needed. Chalmette Battlefield. Location of the battlefield for the battle of New Orleans during the war of 1812. General Andrew Jackson defended the city of New Orleans with a fleet of Americans and a group of savvy pirates against British advancement during the war of 1812. Successful use of cannons against the British and intel lead to a quick and successful victory for the Americans. The battlefield use to be a plantation and field before it was converted into a strategic battle site for Andrew Jackson to stop the British Invasion and control over the Mississippi River. Today the site is visited by tourists from all over the country. Visiting the location is done via a self guided tour. Visitors can visit the battle grounds, a model of the old plantation house (that was used by Andrew Jackson as a headquarters during the battle), and visitor center/museum. I’m taking these last 10 days of 2023 for my annual celebration of ten National Park Service sites I was fortunate enough to visit this year (expanding to include both FB and IG this year). Site for Day 1: Jean Lafitte National Historic Park and Preserve. My parents and I just visited yesterday and today! We did a historic walking tour of Thibodaux, LA and a boat trip on Bayou Lafourche to an old sugar cane plantation and home of a SCOTUS Chief Justice.
