Barbara Kopple Harlan County USA - 1976 “They can shoot me, but they can’t shoot the union out of me.” Barbara Kopples film following the labour struggle of rural American coal mining families in Harlan County, over years, particularly through a 13 month strike after company profits increased 170% and wages increased by only 4% and families lived in poverty and union organisers were murdered by both mine operators and senior union representatives. Kopple and her crew lived with the miners, filming even when they ran out of film because the presence of a camera “kept down violence” “… a call came from the United Mineworkers that they needed someone to film in Harlan County or there would be a killing. Barbara, Kevin Keating, Richard Warner (our local liaison who had owned a sock store in Knoxville, Tennessee), and I flew to Knoxville, loaded into a station wagon with all the 16 mm gear, and drove across 2 lane roads to the picket line. We arrived at 5 am. On one side of the road there were about 30 state troopers looking mean. On the other side, there were an equal number of tough-looking women with clubs. American Dream (1990) Directed by Barbara Kopple Watched: 27/09/2023 Rating: 7/10 Right around the start of the Writers Strike earlier this year, I watched Harlan County USA, which was about a coal miners going on strike. It was directed by Barbara Kopple, who also made 1990’s American Dream, which is about a meatpacker’s strike. I’m watching this on a day where the news about the writers strike being over is still relatively fresh. It feels fitting in that way - bookending and all. The documentary filmmaking is okay. It’s not great. It could have been put together with more purpose. And people on every side of this are very ineloquent and hard to understand - not so much because of their accents, but because they stumble through their thoughts and don’t give context. Either have a narrator clarifying things, or ask your interviewees better questions. Get them to give full, comprehensible answers, with context. Things like this feel sloppy, from a documentary filmmaking perspective. But being about documentary highlighting the struggles of workers, it’s obviously, at bare minimum, good. These things were bad in the 1980s, and they’re bad now. I’m just jealous these people have unions, because the gig economy has been an insidious way to have fewer unions. Also, one worker here complains about wanting to be left alone in her lowly $32,000 house. Imagine a $32,000 house today, even adjusted for inflation. Unchecked wealth will be the end of us all. I’m not saying communism or even socialism would solve everything. Even if it did (and I’m not ruling out the chance it could), it would be hasty to jump to an extreme, or even something people perceive as extreme. Limits on obscene wealth and hoarding would be a start. My blood boils at the idea of a company taking an amazing profit (as seen in this documentary) and then not only not giving the worker anything, but giving them a pay cut. Conservatives, if you conserve things for enough people, you will win elections. But if you get greedy (and powerful people have been greedy), the status quo is going to suck for most. But I feel we're crossing a line here similar to what happened in Barbara Kopple's American Dream about the Hormel meat workers strike of the late 1980s. Yes, Hornell was stiffing the workers but the union did EVERYTHING WRONG. They fought physically at meetings amongst each other. They screamed, berated and threatened delegates who tried to compromise negotiations. Family and friends turned on each other. The union hired a rabble rouser who did more damage than good. May 3 - Harlan County U.S.A. - 1976. One of the grandmamas of modern documentaries, which for some reason I never did see until now. Barbara Kopple’s film does not pretend to be objective. Squarely on the side of the miners rather than corrupt union leaders or corporate management, she and her camera are present at Union tactical meetings, and on the sidelines during confrontations with the “gun thugs” brought in by management to protect the scabs.
