UNFLINCHING A Diary of Tragic Adventure by Edgar Christian c.1937 first edition From the beginning of Chapter 1 - EDGAR CHRISTIAN was born on June 6th, 1908, and died, within a day or two of his nineteenth birthday, alone in a hut on the Thelon River in the North-West Territory of Canada, the last survivor of an expedition which had set out in 1926 to winter in the Thelon Game Sanctuary and explore a new route from Great Slave Lake to Chesterfield Inlet on Hudson Bay. The party had consisted of three Englishmen: the leader, John Hornby-"Hornby of Hudson Bay'"-an experienced Arctic explorer, who had spent many winters farther north than the Thelon; Harold Adlard, a young man of twenty-eight; and Edgar Vernon Christian, Hornby's young cousin. After leaving Fort Resolution on Great Slave Lake no more was heard from them until in July, 1929, a patrol of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police-apparently guided by news received from some trappers-found and buried their bodies and investigated the contents of their hut; and little would ever have been known of their sufferings and death from starvation but for Edgar Christian's diary. Late night repost. 🌙 Cactus Head, digital painting. A lesser known canid of the Mojave desert is an elusive cryptid that goes by the name of Cactus Head. Few sightings of the creature have been recorded in the Yucca Valley and Joshua Tree area. Cactus Head has been described as a large canid with a long slender tail and a bushy cactus for a head. It’s been seen mostly by semi truck drivers, trotting across dark highways and alongside their rigs as they drive. One man by the name of Earl Reymund shared his account of the beast cornering him as he walked from a rest stop to his truck. “I was walking back to my truck and the thing came out of nowhere. Stood there right in front of me. I didn’t think about it too long, I just yelled at it, “hey bear!’” It was all I could think of at the time. The Manhattan Project conducted its first nuclear test in New Mexico, just 210 miles south of Los Alamos. The Himalayas are a magnificent region embellished with small villages, snow-capped mountains, and minimum foot-fall. In some of these villages, barter is still a prevalent money exchange custom. Kibber is one such village which is located in the Spiti Valley of Himachal Pradesh. Located at 4,270 meters above sea level, it is the highest inhabited village with 77 houses. The architectures of the houses are pretty unique here. There is a regular bus service that plies to Kibber only during the summer months from Kaza. Kibber attracts a lot of wildlife photographers across the world for snow leopards. But to spot one you have to really pateint. Unfortunately we weren't that lucky and patient. But riding through kibber was a beautiful experience. Not only kibber, komic, hikkim, I think all the places that we covered was way more beautiful than the places before Kaza. Now obviously Pin Valley was an exceptional. I really wanna visit spiti couple of more times. Kim był James Critchell-Bullock? 🤔 W 1924 roku angielski duet John Hornby i James Critchell Bullock wyruszyli na wyprawę przez Barren Lands – od Edmonton aż po Zatokę Hudsona. Stawili oni czoła niesamowitym trudnościom, a to, co początkowo było niemal naukową misją, zakończyło się walką o przetrwanie. Grupa została zmuszona do porzucenia części swojego sprzętu, w tym depozytu ze sprzętu filmowego w obszarze znanym dziś jako Grove Rapids. Historycznym aspektem naszej ekspedycji będzie zatem próba odnalezienia owej skrytki na miejscu 100 lat później! Warto dodać, że Bullock i Hornby nie byli typowymi odkrywcami swoich czasów. W czasie swoich poczynań w Barren Lands wielokrotnie dzielili się z rdzennymi mieszkańcami tym co upolowali, a sami rdzenni mieszkańcy stanowili dla nich wzór, na których para opierała swój stosunek do świata naturalnego. Motywacją Bullocka były badania naukowe i stworzenie pierwszego w historii filmu przyrodniczego z tego rejonu, który miał pomóc Johnowi Hornby w lobbowaniu rządu kanadyjskiego celem utworzenia nad rzeką Thelon obszaru chronionego. Ich wysiłki znacznie wyprzedzały czasy, w których żyli, a spuściznę ich działań stanowi Thelon Wildlife Sanctuary - obszar wielkości Belgii, który został obszarem chronionym w 1927 roku. Nasza ekspedycja będzie wyjątkową kombinacją historii naturalnej i historii dwóch pierwszych kanadyjskich działaczy na rzecz ochrony przyrody.
