*One Hell of a Gamble: The Secret History of the Cuban Missile Crisis* By Aleksandr Fursenko and Timothy Naftali Until the fall of the Soviet Union and the declassification of U.S. files surrounding the Cuban missile crisis there was only the formal narrative known to most people, Khrushchev places missiles on the island of Cuba 90 miles off of the coast of America, the United States responds with a naval blockade and tough language/ultimatum, the Soviets back down and humanity is saved from nuclear armageddon... But there is just so much more to the story. Enter this book with information drawn from declassified, Top Secret U.S. documents and Soviet archives, including Nikita Khrushchev's own personal files, to paint a much more vivid picture of possibly the most dangerous event in human history. Chock full of detail, this book can at times be confusing with the number of characters and back channel conversations taking place but from my perspective it's an absolute MUST read, especially given the last book I finished that details how a modern nuclear war would play out. Considering that the Cuban Missile Crisis may have been one of the biggest foreign policy wins of all time but still contributed to (or was the cause of?) the President John F. Kennedy's assassination in Dallas and the ousting of Nikita Khrushchev as the leader of the Soviet Union, it says a lot about the fate of great leaders embroiled in international politics and the price those leaders can have to pay, even for potentially saving the human race. *Nuclear War: A Scenario* 🚀 By Annie Jacobsen 6 minutes.... The total time the U.S. President has to select targets and launch a retaliatory Nuclear strike once an enemy launch has been detected from space. 6 minutes to decide the fate of potentially 100's of millions of people. This is the policy of "Launch-on-Warning", a standard piece of the deterrence strategy surrounding the "Mutually Assured Destruction" (MAD) of Nuclear War. A policy designed entirely to signal to enemies that if you launch, we'll see it coming, and you'll be completely annihilated in retaliation.... A policy shared by that same enemy. Now, IF missiles are launched(and when we launch we might as well launch a bunch! We'll all be dead anyway🤷)... these missiles CANNOT be stopped. Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles (ICBM) CANNOT be stopped once launched. They use old technology so as to avoid being "hacked" by the enemy and stopped before reaching their target. Ensuring again that if you launch, you'll be dead, and so will we. These are just a couple of minor facts pointed out by Annie Jacobsen (Operation Paperclip, Area 51) in her newest book which is easily the most horrifying book I've ever read. Knowing how close we are at all times to the complete destruction of life as we know it certainly makes you ask different questions about nearly everything... Not least of all... *The Battle of the Somme: The Heroism and Horror of War* By Martin Gilbert For a long time I've found it hard to avoid being nearly moved to tears by any account of the First World War. There may have been innumerable conflicts over society's history but the First World War always feels like it was the most abrupt meeting place of old ideas with new (and devastating) technology. Airplanes dropping bombs by hand from open cockpits on young men who carry pigeon baskets for communication with headquarters, the first instance of the tank appearing in battle alongside a General's unshakable belief that an opening could be made in the enemy line to allow a cavalry charge, the belief that "Elan" (fighting spirit) would be the key to overcoming bunkers filled with machine guns, and the bayonet charge working alongside and against artillery with shells the size of a grown man. Reading this one certainly hammers that home. The Somme was truly one of the most destructive battles in history in terms of senseless loss of young life. Sacrifice of young life might be a better way to put it. Overall it's challenging to describe how impactful this book is without reading it yourself so I won't try. I will recommend you read it yourself. As a side note: if somehow this post reaches the losers that defaced our War Memorial here in Regina recently... If you can read, you should start here. *The D-Day Landings: The Allies Invasion of Nazi-Occupied Europe* By Nigel Cawthorne A short and readable account of the Allied landings on the beaches of Normandy. While there's likely some more thorough books out there on the topic, this one was pretty good and gives a brief overview of the lead up to the invasion as well as an individual account of the action on each of the separate beaches. One thing I found particularly interesting was just how much the British intelligence agency contributed to the overall success of the operation. Their campaign of disinformation was so successful (aided in large part to having cracked the secret german code which the Germans thought unbreakable, the movie "the Imitation Game" is about the effort to crack this code) that they were able to at one point leak the actual plan of the attack by mistake, only for the Germans to disregard it in favour of preparing for a fictitious attack elsewhere. Overall a good one if you want an overview of the largest amphibious attack in history and to get a sense of the scale of it. *Sask BJJ Provincials Recap* Another solid weekend for the crew! Last weekend the team competed in the Sask BJJ provincial championships. We continued to show our crushing passing pressure in the majority of our matches and showed again we can barbecue our opponents in the mount. We ended the day as the 10th place academy out of 23 with only 8 competitors, losing just a couple matches that would have put us closer to the top. Special moment for this crew that competed with all but two of them having never competed before. Competing is a challenging thing to do and for this many new players to jump in and mix it up definitely makes me proud as a coach. Super proud of everyone!! *Colonialism: A Moral Reckoning* By Nigel Biggar Was colonialism awful? Helpful? Inherently genocidal? Racist? Exploitative? That depends on who you speak to and where they fall on the political spectrum these days it seems. In this book Nigel Biggar looks at the British Colonial Empire and tries to assess whether it was truly what the current activist generation screams that it was... A racist and exploitative system of oppression. The answer is more complicated like all things worth questioning are. To judge anything while assuming rightness is an authoritarian idea. Things must be considered carefully and with nuance and the British colonial Empire is considered quite carefully here. Whether the actions of an empire across 300 years were right or wrong depends on where you sit and what your metrics are for right or wrong. I won't discuss my own thoughts here because it's social media and that would be silly but I will say you should read this book if you have a brain between your ears. Of all the books I've read since I began posting them a few years ago this would rank in the top five. History has a lot to teach us if we are willing to learn. *Say Nothing: A True Story of Murder and Memory in Northern Ireland* By Patrick Radden Keefe A fast paced run though the bitter conflict in Ireland known as the "Troubles", this book weaves together the shared history of a number of the Provisional IRA's most notorious characters and their impact on the cause of Irish independence from Britain while attempting to solve an enduring mystery.... The disappearance of Jean McConville, a mother of 10 abducted from her home in front of her children, never to be seen again. I have to admit I knew absolutely nothing about the IRA or the conflict in Northern Ireland so this was a really interesting read. I've never taken much interest in European history but I'll be diving into it more now after reading this one I think. *The Places in Between* By Rory Stewart In 2002, Rory Stewart walked across Afghanistan relying on the hospitality of strangers for shelter and food. Obviously this was a tumultuous time to be in Afghanistan. During his walk he encounters differences in hospitality, suspicion, political opinion, poverty, and religious affiliations with every new valley he enters. There's also quite a bit of history of the region thrown in and for someone who has heard about Afghanistan since I was a kid (I was 13 when 9/11 took place) it was interesting to read about how diverse the small region is. Interesting bit from the book; the author chats with a religious leader in training (who is 12) about dogs being unclean animals. The author asks where in the Koran it says dogs are unclean. The boy says he doesn't know where it is in the book but it's there. Confused, the author asks why he doesn't know as he was under the impression the boys job was to memorize the holy book front to back and read its contents to others. The boy says it is and he has but the book is in Arabic... A language he can't speak, read, or understand. For the most part, this is a story about extreme poverty and hospitality in the third world. The rural life in Afghanistan seems to stay the same as it was for a thousand years while wars continue to prevent the region from attaining any type of stability. I was lulled to sleep by this book and didn't realize until the second last paragraph how invested I was in the authors journey. If you choose to read this book, be prepared to feel like you're just following along with the mundane events of a daily walk between villages... Because that's what it is. But that's the magic of this book for me. *My Kenya Days* By Wilfred Thesiger Wilfred Thesiger is likely one of the greatest adventurers you've never heard of. During the course of his life he lived alongside many native tribes people in various places including the marshes of southern Iraq, the Arabian desert, and Africa and resented the encroachment of modernity on these peoples, believing that the slow march of progress robbed them, and the world, of all it's uniqueness. I believe this book was his last. In it he describes many journeys through modern day Kenya and the Sudan. His journeys were always intensely interesting to me given the fact he hated modern means of transportation and insisted on travelling on foot or by camel as often as possible. I won't say his style of writing is for everyone. In a number of places it amounts to a list of stops he made along routes he describes with no accompanying maps, making it difficult to get a sense of where he was, and he's not particularly descriptive of the landscape. His books make up for this though with intimate descriptions of his native travelling companions and their unique ways of living. His journeys then are all about the people he travelled with and their life that he so admired. I've included a couple pages for you to peruse if you choose to. In them I think you get a sense of Thesiger and how he viewed events like being charged by lion while on foot with a rifle.... 16 or 17 times, once being knocked over by the body of the lion it being so close...events that would be central for the narrative of most adventure stories sit in one lone paragraph. Wilfred Thesiger was a remarkable man. His book Arabian Sands was the story that got me reading again in my early 20's and I still would count him as my favourite author. His books are great in the sense that you need to use your imagination to its fullest to place yourself right alongside him on foot or in the saddle. *Ancient Mariner: The Amazing Adventures of Samuel Hearne, the Sailor Who Walked to the Arctic Ocean* By Ken McGoogan After reading a biography of David Thompson last year I thought I'd finish this year out with another of Canada's most famous explorers, Samuel Hearne. Samuel Hearne, born in England and spending a number of years in the Royal Navy, was an employee of the Hudson Bay Company tasked with finding the "far off metal River," today's Coppermine River in the Northwest Territories, and determine whether a northwest passage to India was possible north of Hudson Bay. His now famous account of the nearly three year journey is full of hardships travelling and living with the native Dene, and most notably, the brutal massacre of Inuit at Bloody Falls near the arctic ocean. Definitely a simple read that was really enjoyable. *The Lone Samurai: The Life of Miyamoto Musashi* By William Scott Wilson What a cool book for anyone interested in or practicing martial arts. When a wandering warrior enters the village of Hirafuku and displays a challenge to swordsmen in the area (a common practice of the day for samurai with no master to show their abilities in duels in the hopes of gaining employment under the local warlord as an instructor to the clan) a young 13 year old Musashi cheekily responds by painting over the man's challenge with one of his own. When the warrior learns Musashi is 13 he demands an apology to save both of their honour. The next day the boy appears with a staff and, instead of apologizing, he attacks. After "a few exchanges" the young Musashi throws away his staff, grapples the warrior to the ground, retrieves his staff and promptly beats the warrior to death, beginning a career involving as many as 60 duels with the sword. And this story is just the opening few pages! What follows is a look at the total life of Miyamoto Musashi as it is known and his influence beyond his death, walking through his mentality towards sword fighting and ultimately his change of heart after his most famous duel on Ganryu Island at 30 years old, which heavily influenced his life and work "The Book of Five Rings" for which he is best known. Can't recommend this one enough. Anyone in the martial arts space should at the very least be familiar with Musashi for his emphasis on practicality. For an industry stuck on belt promotions being time based and flashy movie views on combat, its amazing to see how someone 400 plus years ago (and Sun Tsu 2000 years before that) had to widdle through a vary similar issue. *The Trojan War: A New History* By Barry Strauss Picked this one up on the off chance it might be interesting and it didn't disappoint. Set 3200 years ago during that so famous conflict between the Greeks and the Trojans over the beautiful Helen, this one works to separate fact from fiction and explore whether or not the war and its famous hero's actually existed or not. The best part about reading this was getting a glimpse into how the people of the Bronze Age viewed their world. With Kingdoms and kings all over the place in such a geographically small area (the kingdoms might have been a couple hours car ride away from each other by today's standards) it's amazing how these stories have survived and how much interest they have generated over the last 3000 years. Made me wonder if in another 3000 years people will be talking about the hero's of climate change or some other issue of today. Somehow I doubt it. *King Leopold's Ghost* By Adam Hochschild Oof. Pretty heavy content in this one. Tells the story of King Leopold ll's private colony in the Congo, Africa and the atrocities committed against the native peoples there. Tracing it's origins as "Belgium's" first colony (really it was King Leopold's privately owned business venture and not technically a colony in the sense of how we would normally think of it for the majority of the book) down to it's end times as a colony and its subsequent struggles as an independent nation ever since, the story is essentially about the oppressors VS the oppressed in its worst form. Slave labour, resource looting, mass death, brutal authoritarians, and massive profits hidden behind it, the Congo story is hard to read about at times but it was definitely worth the time spent. If I had to sum up the book in one sentence it would be - King Leopold ll was a DICK, no doubt about it. *Immoderate Greatness* By William Ophuls Short and sweet. Loaded with good insight as to why civilizations ultimately have no destiny but failure. It's just a matter of time. Ultimately as we progress as a society we eat up more of what we've used on route to our current highs and lose the drive and ambition provided by our original shared narrative until we slide into unmanageable complexity and social and economic paralysis. Highly recommend this one. It's short so even if you don't enjoy reading you'll be able to manage it in a sitting or two. I'd hesitate to say it should be required reading for everyone but it really should be. Also seems a fitting book to finish today as today marks 7 years since my open heart surgery (I didn't count right last year!). *Sask Nogi Open Tournament 2023* Fantastic showing for the team over the weekend at the 1st ever Sask Nogi Open Tournament! Many things stood out to me that I'm going to highlight over the week in separate posts but the one thing I'll mention here is the overall composure of everyone on the team. Grappling is a tough sport and in the heat of competitive matches it is challenging to remain calm and avoid being overwhelmed by the experience but everyone met the challenge head on and left the mats with huge smiles on their faces! This to me is the best possible outcome and I couldn't be more proud of everyone's effort, win, lose or draw. Results: Sam - Female Intermediate Absolute division Champ 🥇👌and 🥈in her weight class Andy - Men's intermediate Absolute division 🥈 and 🥈 in his weight class. Ty - 🥇in his first tournament moving up in weight. Boris - 🥈 in his weight class Matt - a standout showing given it was his first tournament and he fought the youngsters in the adult division. Jackson - 🥇 in his division Little Daniel - 🥈in his division moving up in age and weight division. 5th Team overall with only 7 competitors out of 18 total teams!! Couldn't be happier with everyone's performances and it was great to see everyone back on the mat last night improving immediately after the tournament. *The Story of the SS: Hitler's Infamous Legions of Death* By Al Cimino From it's beginnings as a small, volunteer guard unit providing security for Nazi Party political events to its role in the holocaust, this book follows Adolf Hitler's infamous "SS" group from it's inception to its eventual end. The depth and scope of SS atrocities is absolutely unbelievable. When one leading SS member was charged with the killing 3.5 million people at the Nuremberg trials, he responded with, "No. Only 2.5 million. The rest died of starvation and disease." That statement alone should give everyone an idea of just how fanatical and horrible the organization could be. (Though there surely were degrees of horrible throughout, some members were ordinary people caught up in the politics of the time, others were sadistic murderers with zero empathy. Neither situation is excusable.) I read this one purely because of the Canadian Parliament's recent visitor (a former member of the WAFFEN-SS) and subsequent scandal. Sadly, like every other scandal the Prime Minister's office has been involved in over the last 8 years, this one will likely be swept under the rug and forgotten by next week. Hopefully the crimes committed by the Nazi regime during WWII won't be and can continue to be an example of the potential outcome of ideology and the slow march to tyranny. *DOOM: The Politics of Catastrophe* By Niall Ferguson Doom basically attempts to shed light on how our responses to catastrophic events in world history (natural disasters, wars, but mostly pandemics) often make the disaster so much worse than it needed to be. This one wasn't my favourite but it was an interesting read. Makes the case that there's more going on than we generally consider when it comes to disasters (or anything for that matter). It's never as simple as, "well if we'd just done X then Y wouldn't have happened." Made me think about how certain it seems people are. Everyday I talk to someone who is positive they KNOW the right answer to some problem be it political, environmental, social... *A Wrestling Life: Inspiring Stories of Dan Gable* By Dan Gable and Scott Schulte Dan Gable is one of the most famous wrestlers 🤼 of all time with stories galore from his own competitive career as well as his amazing coaching career. He managed to win a gold medal in the 1970 Olympic games without having a single point scored on him... A pretty impressive feat considering the Russian team had been training a specific person just to beat him. He went on to eclipse his own competitive achievements with an even more impressive coaching career after that. An equally impressive feat when you understand wrestling is the toughest sport on the planet and likely one of the oldest sports there is. Reading this one initially I was pretty bummed. It wasn't written particularly well and it seemed to be a lot of stories I'd already heard. But towards the end I had a change of opinion. I was reading the stories that were most important to him and hearing the lessons he took from those experiences. It was nice to be reminded that stuff like geopolitics, pandemic response, fur trade history, pimping, or any other thing I read about is just interesting stuff I like to read about but have virtually no influence on. At the end of the day though, a book about my life wouldn't have any stuff like that in it likely. It would have the stories from my life like the ones in this book. Hopefully full of experiences I learned from that were most important to me. *All Quiet on the Western Front* By Erich Maria Remarque This one took a bit to get going for me but once I had three hours on a plane to kill... It sure took off. A dive into the mind of a soldier on and off the front lines during World War 1, we get a sense of just how confusing it can be to exist on the edge of life and death while simultaneously having difficulty understanding what the point of it all is. This book actually made me think a lot about our modern focus on mental health (read it and you'll understand why). How many people ever "recover" from mental health issues? What does it mean to be fixed? Are there degrees to recovery depending on the nature of the trauma? The generations that fought in both world wars likely didn't have time consider those questions when the war was over despite living through traumas a million times more devastating. Makes me wonder whether our modern mental health fixation isn't just like legs on a snake... Maybe not useless but irrelevant. Or maybe we can't live as humans without trauma of some kind, be it real or imagined and having no external struggles is the great battlefield of our time. I definitely don't know enough. Maybe I'll read about mental health in the future. Either way, it's terrible what we humans do to each other sometimes. A classic for sure. *Never Finished* By David Goggins I've read both of David's books now and he certainly makes you want to get up early and run. The things this man has been able to accomplish are astounding but what sets him apart for me is his willingness to work through the pain threshold. Pain is like a spectrum. It can be shifted to accommodate more or less for specific issues. I can barely handle sitting and working at the computer for more than a couple of hours while lots of people do it day in and day out at work for example. Things that make some nuts are a daily routine for others. When we read about someone like David, he seems like a superhuman (and he surely is!) but the reality is he's just more used to challenging himself. A lifetime of challenging himself day in and day out produced a very unique individual... One that doesn't care about what he's done, only what he's going to do next. This is part of why I love Brazilian Jiujitsu as much as I do. You can challenge your mental health, physical condition, and real time skill acquisition just by showing up to train. Like I tell my students @expedition_bjj all the time... The only people who don't have success in the sport are those that quit. It never gets any easier but it definitely gets more fun. It's the challenge that should excite us, not the results. *PIMP: The Story of my Life* By Iceberg Slim What a ride. Drugs, prostitution, gambling, prison time, more drugs and prostitution, more prison time, prison escape, flashy cars, big money, loneliness, despair, and savagery. Iceberg Slim lived the Pimp's highs and lows during the 1930's and 40's. To take a dive into his experiences is to step into a world so unfamiliar it reads like fiction despite it being the true story of his life. This book didn't shock or horrify me, but it did make me think about one word in particular, PERSPECTIVE. Everyone out there is struggling to make it in their own way and we can only do what we know to make it work. Ultimately, this is why we need to read books. To spend dedicated time in someone else's shoes. To see how they think, feel, act, and justify their actions, however we may disagree with them. I highly recommend this one if only because we spend way too much time stuck in our own little individual world's. Getting outside of your own little box for a bit is the real superpower we have in this day and age. *Highlights from Fayia's Copa Sask Competition* What can we say about this young guy other than jeez he's tough to hold down! Fayia showed a bit of what he's capable of in his very first tournament. Fayia has been a little legend at Expedition BJJ for his unbelievable ability to make movement happen from anywhere, being really tough to hold down, and for always having a big smile on his face. During his matches he showed some good takedown defense against some seasoned wrestlers (even getting a highlight reel worthy throw of his own!), some good guard passing movement, and was able to show off some of the Submission skills we've been working on with him. Though he came up sort on points in a couple of his matches, he was never in any real danger in his division. Super proud of this young guy and his effort in his first tournament. Now that he has the itch to compete, I'm really excited to have everyone see his development come the fall tournament season. He has always been tough but another few months of work and he'll be wearing gold medals around his neck! *Thirteen Days: A Memoir of the Cuban Missile Crisis" By Robert F. Kennedy After reading this one I'm 99% sure it should be REQUIRED reading for everyone. It's a quick but powerful read and it made me consider that the Cuban Missile Crisis might represent the very peak of humanity's stupidity AND the peak of it's intelligence as a species all at the same time. To me it seems to be the most important event in human history. The level of responsibility and level headedness required by both Kennedy and Kruschev during those 13 days is unimaginable. Working with and against their own government's recommendations at the same time, balancing the needs of their respective nations and the fate of mankind... It's a miracle these men didn't keel over from stress. A special mention of JFK's speech writer, Theodore "Ted" Sorenson. Writing the President' s Address for October 22, 1962 might have been the toughest task of all time. @expedition_bjj One final thing to consider. I watched the documentary "Fog of War" after finishing this to learn a bit more about Robert McNamara. He says that in 1992 he met Fidel Castro at a conference. Castro revealed to him that Nuclear missiles were already operational in Cuba during the crisis and he had recommended Kruschev use them on the US... Knowing full well Cuba would have been completely destroyed by the resulting response... The world legitimately came within a millimeter of total annihilation at multiple times during those 13 days. Everyone should read this and consider just how closely we still flirt with Nuclear disaster on a daily basis... And we might not even know it. Would you trust our current leadership to keep a cool head or even know what's happening? *Lawrence in Arabia* By Scott Anderson Took me a bit to get through this one but it was pretty good. Knowing only a little about the Eastern Front during WW1, this one was particularly interesting following The Guns of August. It follows T. E. Lawrence along with a cast of other important historical figures as they engage in clandestine operations, battling it out in the shadows for the most part to help decide the fate of the middle East upon the wars conclusion. Mostly the book is about Lawrence's moves and the Arab revolt against the Ottoman Empire but underneath it shows a lot of similarities to The Guns Of August. The most obvious is the slow pace of change in tactics and the millions of lives it cost. While it has a lot of other things going on including the founding of Israel, imperial interests, spy networks, genocide... Still what stands out to me is the needless loss of live in arguably the world's most pointless war. @expedition_bjj If you're at all interested in the Middle East but prefer to leave the majority of the politics behind, I'd suggest any one of Wilfred Thesiger's books (a personal hero of mine!).
