I'm a fan of Mycology. I have my favorites and can identify them with 100% accuracy. Some I am unsure of and usually leave them be. I'll take a picture and study them when I get home using my mushroom field manual. The Chanterells in this area are abundant and easily identified by their yellow color and trumpet like shape. Another yummy mushroom growing in North Carolina, the Black Morel, grows at the base of Tulip Poplar trees when they start to leaf. After 5 years of fruitless searching every spring I FINALLY found morels! 🎉 The unseasonably warm weather in Switzerland (29°C in Basel) effectively ruined our plans for weekend skiing so we swapped skis for an alpine hike in t-shirts and shorts. As is my custom now, every spring I’m out scouring the ground for morels. I’ve studied all my foraging books, easily watched hundreds of hours of videos from professional foragers and.. nothing. I find myself looking at woodchips, burn sites, conifers, grasslands, elms, poplars, apple trees.. basically all the different permutations that could associate with any of the dozens of morels out there. At the end of this hike we were ready to call it a day surmising that it was too warm & too dry for morels when from my peripheral vision I spotted the silhouette I’d been searching for & spontaneously started screaming and pointing. As my crew had all been briefed we were looking for morels they knew what the screaming indicated and Little Man started sprinting at top speed back to me, at which point my screams turned quickly to yells of “Stop! Do not step here!” There, in an exposed area right next to the trail were two proud black morels standing tall. But they were only the first, as our party scattered out we found a concentrated patch of them, discovered with whoops of joy! Back home we weighed them & they totaled a respectable 150g. Cutting through them confirmed that they were also true black morels (vs false, early or semi-free morels). Even with much enthusiasm on my part to identify exactly which species of black morel these are, I can only guess that they’re Morchella importuna. They were light grey when young, maturing to a dark brown to black with pretty regular honeycomb pits. Any🆔 tips are welcome! 🙏 I had a spring in my step for the rest of the day with periodic exclamations of “yes!” and some fist pumping. I knew the Italians would know what they’re doing, most gluten free pasta disappoints texture-wise. But like the Dude once said, that’s just my opinion man. Life is too short to not have some tasty food that’s not optimal for humans in my opinion, but that was not always my opinion. When I was 50 lbs overweight and really inflamed (I didn’t know that yet), I became very orthorexic. My social life really suffered. I was trying so hard to get better and not succeeding. I feel like I had to be 100%, and I still didn’t get results. I had to get one on one coaching for weightlifting and mindset to finally get results. I got results by logging my food for months. Getting to live it up 20% of the time is not an invitation to not be disciplined and responsible. There’s usually a trade off, but not always. Many of my life partners did not have a trade off, so I ate food that wasn’t good for me thinking it’ll work itself out. Now I know my boundaries. I know I’ll feel worse and not perform as well if I consume gluten, alliums, pork, alcohol refined flour, cane sugar, nightshades, and dairy. I give myself a week to recover, after noticing that is what it honestly takes. So I control my intake of these items but don’t eliminate. I wish these foods were less prevalent, but society isn’t there yet. I suffered more in my isolated path of orthorexic tendencies with no one to support me on a healthy eating journey. I still feel largely alone. I hope to change that in time. Because wow, do I feel better knowing these things about myself! The process of learning wasn’t easy, and I wished I had had a guide in my 20s. I've taken a lot of photos of morels. But so far, this is my favorite photograph of one I've taken. I used a Sigma art 24-70 f2.8, at 24mm, so i could get close, but still show a lot of the scene. Then, I used a godox speedlight off camera through a dome defuser to get the scene lit like this.
