What a great inter generational story about a young Peranakan Chinese boy who wants to cook Nyonya food alongside his Mamah— the queen bee of the family. What a weekend! I finally got to celebrate 𝘽𝙤𝙮𝙨 𝘿𝙤𝙣’𝙩 𝙁𝙧𝙮 on home ground 🇲🇾, surrounded by so many of my nearest and dearest- family members, teammates, neighbours, old friends - and many new ones too! The other day I found my daughter (6) reading this picture book alone. While she adores reading, as a very social and chatty kid, she almost always wants to read with me or my spouse. When she was done, she popped her head up from the book and said, with a big smile, “MmmMmm, this book is delicious! It makes me want to eat all the yummy food in it.” 🥹 Can a review get any better? I wish I could’ve had all the food from the third image on the table right then and there for her! BOYS DON’T FRY by @kimlsywrites & @charlenedraws is a delightful intergenerational picture book challenging gender stereotypes. Jin wants to help make the Lunar New Year feast, but his family tell him boys can’t cook. Thankfully his Mamah has a different opinion. Awesome grandmothers for the win! Jin loves to cook and knows all of the different spices. He volunteers to help in the kitchen and his aunts all have an excuse to not let him. His grandmother makes sure Jim can help. The illustration with the walking cane making “noise” was a big hit in the classroom. “Oh, his grandmother means business.” Jin is proud to help cook but also nervous. His grandmother tells him to cook from his heart. The story ends the family cooking together the following year for Lunar New Year. It mentions “the special ingredient.” Our class discussed that Jin could be the special ingredient but also love. ❤️ One student asked if the title was supposed to be “boys don’t cry.” It stunned me that this was a phrase already learned. LUNAR NEW YEAR: celebrate and center a passion of food over centuries of gender norms Can we say something about representation? When I told my kid that this is one of the very few books with Malaysian representation, she couldn't wait to read it. She literally shouted as I read: Laksa! Kueh! - words of the foods we love that we haven't seen in picture books. There's pie tee and pongteh chicken in a book! 😭😋 As a Malaysian who absolutely loves food (ok, which isn't saying much since I've yet to find a Malaysian who isn't passionate about what we eat), it's just so wonderful to read about dishes and ingredients I grew up with. This book, about Peranakan culture, is really the essence of Malaysian (and Singaporean) food. Jin, a kid who just loves food and is more than eager to help prepare their big Lunar New Year meal, meets resistance from his aunties. But Mamah, his grandmother, brings him under her warm guidance - putting him to work grinding spices with the mortar and pestle, and telling him the secrets of her dishes. Together, they create a scrumptious meal - which is really the only reason families gather for Lunar New Year. That, and the hong baos. 🧧 Peranakan culture, a beautiful blend of Chinese and Malay culture, is what makes Malaysian food magical. As his family prepares for lunar new year, Jin’s aunties ask his sisters if they’d like to help prepare the family feast. But when Jin volunteers, they tell him no! Luckily Jin’s grandma recognizes his desire to help and brings him into the kitchen where he learns family recipes and finds joy in helping feed his family. 📙📕📘📗 This book is delightful! We loved the peek into Peranakan Chinese culture by learning about (and seeing via fantastic illustrations) the different dishes Jin and his family prepared. 7 was totally hooked by the story, which reminded me how much he enjoys helping in the kitchen. Bringing BOYS DON’T FRY back to my hometown of Malacca this weekend! Known for its rich history (and delicious Peranakan food!), Malacca is a must-visit if you’re coming to Malaysia. The term Peranakan (which means “locally born”) Chinese refers to a distinct, mixed community in Malaysia, Singapore, and Indonesia—descendants of an intermarriage between early Chinese settlers in the fifteenth century and the local Malay/Indonesian people.
