The Cure played The Town and Country Club 2 (now The Garage) in London on Thursday January 17th 1991. This was a secret show under the name 'Five Imaginary Boys', a warm-up for their appearance at the Great British Music Weekend at Wembley two days later. Confuso tb pq foi o mais perto que Robert Smith chegou de uma carreira solo. ApΓ³s descer atΓ© o inferno existencial de Pornography (1982) para logo depois abraΓ§ar o pop cΓnico de Japanese Whispers (1983) ainda nΓ£o se sabia se o Cure ainda era uma banda convencional ou sequer existisse. Nesse meio tempo Robert Smith foi guitarrista dos Banshess. Gravou o Hyaena e montou o Glove junto com Steve Severin. Essa temporada foi crucial no som vindouro do Cure. Se por um lado The Top serviu para redefinir a imagem do grupo, por outro mergulhou a banda em experimentalismo psicodΓ©lico caΓ³tico. O resultado Γ© muito estranho aos ouvidos acostumados com "Boys Don't Cry". Mesmo ao lado do eterno amigo de infΓ’ncia Laurence Toulhurst, Smith praticamente gravou tudo sozinho. E nΓ£o parecia estar estar muito sΓ³brio. Na turnΓͺ contou com Porl Thompson, Phil Thornalley e Andy Anderson. Ou seja, finalmente o Cure se tornou uma banda de arena.
