Last night I treated Gabriella to a girls’ night and we went to see Hamilton at the @bristolhipp I have wanted to see Hamilton for years, as I think Lin-Manuel Miranda who wrote the musical is a genius wordsmith and songwriter. What blew me away with this show is that there is virtually no speaking; the vast majority of this adapted true story is told through different genres from hip hop, rap and jazz. It makes for a musical smorgasbord that draws you in from beginning to end. The entire cast gave stellar performances and I thoroughly enjoyed the entire show. The storyline was a little bit too mature for Gabriella, but she loved the songs, the sassy Schuyler Sisters and King George’s quippy solo had her giggling. The show is advised at aged 10+ and I would think that is about right, as although Gabriella likes to think of herself as a big girl, the American revolution and fight for independence is quite a heavy topic and there is a smattering of colourful language! To see one of our most beloved Knights of the realm performing in his first ever panto is quite the treat, how thoroughly disappointing then to report that the production is desperately inferior to the man topping the bill. David Suchet speaks with full blooded voice as Captain Hook and for 77 is amazingly spritely as he dashes about the stage with plenty of wash and buckle. He’s terrific. Sadly there is a vast emptiness to the cheap looking staging - there’s no ship and Suchet makes his ‘grand’ entrance on a chair! Andy Ford’s regular Bristol slot feels lazy and laboured with little to laugh about. Faye Tozer brings an assemblance of glamour, albeit in a pretty poor costume. Of course she is forced to perform Tragedy! Ceri Dupree is well drilled, but it all feels a little old hat. The bizarre choice is then to kill off Hook before the interval so that he can be wheeled back again as Poirot. It feels ill thought out. It was our first time experiencing the royal ballet, and it definitely won't be our last. The dancing was absolutely mind-blowing, and the costumes were stunning. I loved how the live orchestra added to the atmosphere, and being able to see them from our seats in the stalls was a bonus. The storytelling was captivating, and it's safe to say Sleeping Beauty is a must-watch! . 👠 EVERYBODY’S TALKING ABOUT JAMIE 👠 🗓️ 30.03.24 📍 Bristol Hippodrome 💺 STALLS, ZA1 & ZA2 & ZB1 & ZB2 . Hehe had to do the double whammy and see this show once more while it was as still local. And I’m SO glad I got to go again as I got to see @georginahagenofficial as Ms Hedge. I think over the years I’ve seen either 5 or 6 different Ms Hedges’ but I’ve got to say, I think this may have been my favourite. Aside from the fact that Georgina is an iconic part of my childhood (it’s Rebecca Chalmers - not Rebs or Rebby, not Becca or Bex xoxox), I felt her portrayal of Ms Hedge was a brilliant mix of being fresh while ‘traditional’ to the role. And those vocals and choreo? SLAY 💅🏻. Yet again, all the cast were brilliant, Kevin as Loco, Ivano as Jamie and Rebecca as Margret especially. I went with my mum who naturally sobbed through most of Margret’s scenes haha and my sister & her husband who were watching it live for the first time. This was closing night in Bristol, and to be totally honest, I found the audience to be a little bit dry. The listening, respect and overall theatre etiquette was pretty poor (at least around me) and I think the cast deserved a much more energised send off. Overall, I’m so glad I got to go again. This is one of my comfort shows and it meant a lot to me to bring it to all the people I love most. . 👠 EVERYBODY’S TALKING ABOUT JAMIE 👠 🗓️ 25.03.24 📍 Bristol Hippodrome 💺 STALLS, H35 & H36 So pleased I finally got a see one of my favourite shows again for the first time in a while last month. This is the shows opening night in Bristol and was also opening night for Kevin as Loco, Sam as Ms Hedge and Sejal as Ray. Every single one of the cast were amazing, but I think a special shout out is needed for @keviclifton. I’ve seen this show many times and have seen a handful of different Locos, but I must say this was my favourite portrayal of the character I’ve ever seen. The energy, the campness and the humour mixed with that voice was a perfect casting for me. Seeing Ivano for the first time was also amazing. He really bought his own style of Jamie and I think it worked perfectly. He also is so sweet and took the time to meet everyone at stage door, as did many other cast members, even though they had a press night party to go to. The audience energy was also great and it was just amazing to be surrounded by people who truly ‘get’ and appreciate the show. 🎭Self care! Doing things that make you feel more like yourself! What does self care look like for you? What do you do simply for yourself? 🧙♀️Friday I went to see the amazing @yellowbrickroad at the @bristolhipp - @thevivienne_ was the Wicked Witch of the West, she was incredible. Her laugh gave me chills and she completely commanded the stage, she embodied all the mannerisms perfectly. 👏@astonmerrygold was the Tinman and as expected his dance moves and character captivated the audience. 💛@aviva.tulley made an amazing Dorothy, her voice was beautiful! 👏@benjaminalexyates brought a new twist on the Scarecrow which was refreshing, he made the audience raw with laughter with his slap stick humour. I looked forward to his lines and moments throughout the show. 🐕I won’t spoil the surprise but TOTO was a star in his own right!! Sadly it’s come to an end @bristolhipp but it is touring the country at the moment! Lots more exciting performances will be happening at the @bristolhipp in the upcoming months - check out the website! 🚌 I’m so happy I left my comfort zone and took myself on a solo date to the theatre. I travelled by the M1 bus that took me straight into the centre and practically dropped me off at a bus stop opposite the @bristolhipp ! 👏The performance was amazing, all the classic songs we know and love with a contemporary twist. The characters were bold and all lovable in their own way. 👏I’ve been on a solo date to the cinema, a concert and on a flight and can now tick off a theatre production. 🎭 Why is there so much stigma around doing things alone? In Cardiff seeing a musical about Canadian heroes (Come From Away at the magnificent Welsh Millennium Centre), so took in a Canadian breakfast. Yep, looks like a McDonald's wannabe, but not a patch on its American rivals in terms of taste. The only positives are you can choose your sauce (brown, tomato or piri piri) and they do draught Dr Pepper. Coffee was ok and a fairly good value meal. Overall, an amazing musical(very highly recommended and coming to Bristol Hippodrome soon) but a disappointing breakfast. Big team, but struggling to get out of league 1. We're off the see the wizard..... 🧙 (ad) Last night we were invited to see The Wizard of Oz at The Hippodrome and WOW - my cheeks hurt from smiling so much!😅 I haven't watched the film since I was very young so it was like hearing the story for the first time. I can't imagine how magical the experience would have been for the kids in the audience last night ✨ The stage adaptation was done perfectly - full of jokes for all ages (and a few that only the adults would get!) and the use of props were spot on. I enjoyed it both as an adult and felt like I was a child again. There are a few surprises throughout the performance too, which were terrifying and brilliant in equal measure 😂 Full of incredible musical numbers, talented performers and clever staging, this is one you absolutely need to see! Press night invite 🎟️ Follow the yellow brick road at @bristolhipp to the wonderful land of Oz. What a show from start to finish it was full of fun, joy & laughter, with lots of quick scene changes and uplifting songs. A modern twist on a classic story, that had people laughing throughout, the puppetry for Toto was fantastic and Dorothy didn’t only have dazzling ruby slippers, she had a show stopping voice that gave me goosebumps! A brilliant production and great cast, Finley absolutely loved it and gave it 5 stars 🌟. It’s in Bristol until Saturday 7th April, with limited tickets remaining, running time 2 hours 10 including interval.
