A few snaps of Bristol Old Vic, Haworth Tompkins' clever remodelling of the oldest continuously working theatre in the English-speaking world. Completed 2018. Their new facade forms a respectful neighbour to the portico frontage of the original. (Penultimate image borrowed from their website. Far too good to be mine, and somehow a completely clear street). Haworth Tompkins are just really good at knitting together the different historic theatre parts in jobs like this; they also did the Young Vic in London (and Liverpool's new Everyman). I much prefer the Vic here to their London one, it feels much clearer, less cramped. I want to get some better pics at some point of the rear wall at night. On Sunday (28 April), we attended the fourth annual Young Company City performance at Bristol Old Vic, where St Anne’s Young people presented a theatre piece 🎭 They've been meeting every Wednesday since January at St Anne’s House to prepare. The event featured 11 other schools and groups, creating a lively atmosphere filled with Bristol talent and celebration! ✨ The drama was led by SAH Youth Producer Jack Young and Bristol Director Eli Lower, with nine young members contributing to writing, planning, and performing. It's been a fantastic project, witnessing enthusiastic young people come together to create something magical! _ Young Company City is a project which involves Bristol Old Vic practitioners delivering free weekly drama sessions to schools and community groups across Bristol. Young Company City aims to reach young people who have never been to Bristol Old Vic before or engaged in theatre or drama. Starter For Ten - Bristol Old Vic - Metalworker 04/01/24 - 30/03/24 Along with the workshop supervisor Ian Penny, I constructed the metal frame of this large set piece for The Bristol Old Vic's production of Starter For Ten, which is now on its way to the West End. According to the technical drawings, I cut out the lengths of 50x50 box steel and welded the frame together. Split into 3 pieces, it was then bolted together to form the whole structure. Fixed castors were then welded to the base, which when combined with a motor, allowed the steps to move up and down stage. It was then clad in 18mm MDF by the Head Carpenter, Rhys Gillard, and painted by the Scenic Artist team. Thank you to everyone within the company that made this show an absolute blast to work on! . 📺 STARTER FOR TEN 📺 🗓️ 09.03.24 📍 Bristol Old Vic 💺 UPPER CIRCLE, A25 & A26 . At the start of the month I went to see ‘Starter for Ten’ at the Bristol Old Vic theatre. It was my first time going to this theatre and it was really beautiful inside - I’m obsessed with the patterns on the roof😻. Although I will say I’m a taller girlie and I found the leg to room at my seat to be painful at times🙈 My mum was really keen to watch this musical as, while we sometimes watch University Challenge together now, she was also watching the show in the era in which this was set, so she could possibly find it all slightly more relatable than I could. She also read the book which I haven’t, although maybe I will now. That being said, overall I enjoyed the show. I thought it was equal parts funny and emotional which are things I enjoy in a show. The cast were exceptional and I couldn’t fault them at all; the energy was there throughout the whole performance. The songs were enjoyable with a couple still floating about my head now. Come through with the vocals 👏🏾 No More Mr Nice Guy is another great play from the multi award-winning creative movement Nouveau Riche 🎭 No More Mr Nice Guy is written by Cal-I Jonel who also plays the lead as teacher/aspiring musician, Keloughn. What a talent! The singing and rapping was excellent with songs ranging from R’n’B love songs to comical raps. I absolutely loved Jonel’s voice and really enjoyed seeing the musicians in action on stage too. The staging gave intimate gig vibes plus a play with live music is always a win 🎤🎶 Keloughn was really going through it in this play. His work as a teacher wasn’t going great and his desires to make it into the Senior Leadership team was being hampered by colleagues whose microaggressions were uncomfortable to watch but all too relatable. Then there was the family pressures and his upcoming wedding. To round it off Keloughn was trying to make it as a professional artist but the record label had other ideas about the kind of music he should make. I would have loved for some of the storylines to have been fleshed out a bit more and to find out how things panned out. Overall No More Mr Nice Guy was an enjoyable watch. There was a good balance of comedy and addressing serious and relatable issues 👌🏾 This one gets three stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️ No More Mr Nice Guy is no longer showing @broadwaycatford . However it has gone on tour and you can catch it @therepbirmingham until Saturday 30th March. 🎓 Starter for Ten at Bristol Old Vic. When I first read David Nicholls’ book, it was a jaunt down memory lane as a former student in the English dept at the University of Bristol. It must’ve been a fairly recent memory as it was published while I was still there! Lovely to share this live musical version with Amy, who was often my little bit of home in Bristol during those student years, and her mate Jeremy who actually competed in University Challenge in real life (added a whole extra layer of hilarity). A fun show with heart in a venue that’s been refurbed to feel warm, welcoming and lively (take note architects who create cold vacuous front of house spaces). Loved these cute branded wafers that came with our half time ice creams. I liked that some of the more stressful moments in the book were dealt with a lighter hand as it fitted better with the general vibe of the show. The mid 80s design was spot on with the knitted jumpers and hangovers of 70s design feeling genuine rather than that fancy dress version of the 80s that makes me twitch. Especially liked their approach to the quiz section. It brought to mind all the evening cwtches up on the sofa with my sons watching Univeristy Challenge, Pointless and Mastermind, shouting out the answers. Looking forward to An Evening With David Nicholls in April thanks to the wonderful @griffinbooksuk to celebrate his newest novel You Are Here. Happy 91st birthday to the raven-haired TV and screen beauty Jeanette Sterke (born March 25, 1933) who graced cinema screens for more than three decades, including memorable roles in “The Prisoner” (1955), starring Alex Guinness, which marked her film debut; “Lust for Life” (1956), starring Kirk Douglas as Vincent van Gogh; and director Fred Zinnemann’s masterpiece “The Nun’s Story” (1959), as one of Audrey Hepburn’s ‘sisters’. • Jeanette married the distinguished award-winning stage and screen actor Keith Michell in 1957. Perhaps his most famous role as was King Henry VIII in the six-part BBC series, “The Six Wives of Henry VIII”, in 1970. • Born in Prague in the former Czechoslovakia in 1933, her parents escaped the Nazis by fleeing to England. After finishing her schooling, she attended the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and graduated in 1963, alongside Keith Baxter, Ronald Allen, and Belinda Lee. • She made her TV debut a year later, in the 1954 adaptation of Arthur Schnitzler’s “Liebeli” for the BBC. Just over 4 years later and what a lot has happened since then! I met up with #TomMorris ( who was then the artistic Director of #BristolOldVic) in January 2020 when he had first added his #fingerprint along with #charlottegeeves and the team down at #BristolOldVic . It was a January 2020 just before the full imapact of the #CovidVirus. Yesterday again Tom added his #fingerprint on the 15th March 2024 for an altogether different event but the connective same reason. We are all one, and have a part to play in our past, present and future.
