To Bukit Patoi for the first night walk of 2023. As is often the case, lightning and the rumble of distant thunder beckoned me across the bridge. I sat out the worst of the storm in the car beneath the huge concrete fir cone in the car park before slowly making my way up to Batu Berdingding, which I reached at 1am. Once the storm departed, the damp forest quickly came to life. Oh how I have missed the jungle sounds! The unusual caterpillar pictured will eventually burrow into the soil to pupate. After two or three weeks a sphinx moth will emerge. Also known as hawk moths, the Sphingidae are a moth family famed for their flight. Able to hover and move rapidly from side to side, behaviour that may have evolved to deal with ambush predators in flowers, their flight is similar enough to that of hummingbirds as to be readily mistaken for them. The French entomologist Pierre André Latreille named the family for the behaviour of the larva. When resting, it holds its legs off the surface and tucks in its head, as if at prayer, resembling the Great Sphinx at Giza. Interestingly Latreille was imprisoned during the French Revolution, only regaining his freedom after recognising a rare beetle found in the prison. Regarded as the finest entomologist of his era, he is remembered amongst many things for his work on classification. Unlike the shy arboreal tarantula, which seeks the refuge of its lair when disturbed, this ground dwelling Orange-fringed Tarantula is not so easily scared away... Aplopeltura boa The Field Guide to the Snakes of Borneo describes the outline of this island as resembling ‘a rather tubby chicken with the head of a barking chihuahua’. This improbable but entertaining description is in fact quickly confirmed by a cursory consultation of the map! By comparison, the snake seen on a recent night walk in Temburong seems disappointingly described by its taxonomic name: Aplopeltura boa. The generic name is taken from the Latin for single, shield and tail in reference to its single subcaudal scales. The species name is from the Latin for large snake. Being a small, slender snake well under a metre in length, this name seems not only inappropriate, but also blind to the snake’s many more obvious charms. A scientist’s interest in scale count notwithstanding, there are so many better reasons to marvel at this snake which ought to have inspired a mightier moniker. The common name is no better, plainly describing its blunt head and fondness for snails. How could the experts not be moved to name it after the gravity-defying balancing act and camouflage theatrics of its movement? To watch this snake is to witness a bravura performance in motionless acrobatics. When threatened, it freezes with stick-straight discipline, with most of its body extended impossibly above whatever branch to which it has meagre purchase. It is an illusionist feat that makes it the Harry Houdini of herpetology! Amongst other remarkable features are its eyes. The snake coolly regards any observer, reflecting camera flash and wide-eyed wonder in the enormous black mirrors of its spectacular eyes. Bukit Patoi conquered! 🇧🇳 I know it might be an easy one for some, but for someone who hates hiking this is quite a big deal. We managed to get to the top in about an hour as we leisurely stop for photos too. The decent was more difficult as we were using a new route and took us nearly 3 hours! We trekked for nearly 7 KM in total, down slippy grounds and some infested with fire-ants. The waterfall route was closed because recently visitors have been littering the place 🤬 But it's totally worth going though. The hill is simply stunning and I believe some parts were made by ancient aliens 👽 Our cool guides made sure we go at our own pace and was having some laughs too. The hike is an additional add-on if you're staying at @abodebrunei. Totally recommend it, if unfit me can do it, I'm sure you can! #giwbrunei #bukitpatoi #hiking #temburong

👣 𝙒𝘼𝙇𝙆𝙄𝙉𝙂 𝘼𝙇𝙊𝙉𝙂𝙎𝙄𝘿𝙀 𝙂𝙄𝘼𝙉𝙏𝙎 The latest hiking excursion takes us to the enchanting forests of Bukit Patoi, which is part of the sprawling 1070-hectare Peradayan Forest Reserve in Temburong district. The trail begins with a flight of gentle-to-moderately steep stairs to set the pulses racing and muscles warmed up. Concrete soon gives way to natural terrain and along the way you will be in the company of physically imposing dipterocarp trees which can grow up to 70 m high! Other striking features which also deserve mention are Batu Berdinding, a near-vertical wall of a stack of sandstone rocks and Batu Terganggam, essentially a large boulder seemingly trapped by the gripping force of the roots of the tree which had grown on the rock. With an elevation gain of around 220 m and 1.7 km distance covered, you will reach the peak in 1 hr at an average pace travelling uphill the whole way. Rising to 310 m above sea level, you will soon realise every ounce of effort is worth it! From the vantage point which has a dual purpose of a helipad, you will be treated to stunning views of the surrounding forests against the backdrop of increasingly faint sillhouette of the mountain ranges of neighbouring Sarawak. You need a reasonable level of fitness but will be rewarded with this fantastic view when you reach the summit.
