@kapwanikiwanga at the #canadianpavilion @venice.art.biennale Kapwani Kiwanga transforms the Canada Pavilion by way of a site- specific sculptural installation on the buildingโs interior and exterior, turning it into a large-scale tableau. The installation principally consists of conterie (seed beads), historically employed as both currency and items of exchange. Conterie were dispersed globally from the Venetian island of Murano and incorporated into various material cultures. Kiwanga uses these tiny glass units to construct the monumental out of the minute, each bead acting as a witness to past transactions that changed the socioeconomic landscape of the sixteenth century and beyond. The work addresses the often-destructive history of commerce and how the trade of these beads shaped the world. Other materials related to the trade of conterie are also included. They rise from the pavilionโs floor onto the walls and spill out into the courtyard. As they meet the beads, they formalise a place of exchange, prompting reflection on issues of value, aesthetics, and global economic relations.

On my last day in Angoulรชme, I had a more relaxed schedule, just one signing early in the day. So some new pals and I traveled a little further afield and checked out the Musรฉe de Bande Desinรฉe, an entire art museum dedicated to the history (and present) of comics, and it was an incredible place. Then we journeyed back to the Festival and began all our many goodbyes. Finally, I had supper with a few of my fellow Canadian artists and had the best burger Iโve tasted while in Europe. I was nervous to come here, but now itโs a little sad to leave. But I am cheered with the idea of coming back someday, and delighted that if all goes to plan, Iโll be holding my darlings in my arms tonight.
