We have experimented with different summer crops in the cat tunnel over the years - tomatoes, fennel, celery, basil...). This year we're keeping it simple - it will be home to our whole pepper and chilli crop. We've always had the Padrons in there and they have loved it. They'll be joined by Amy (very early, pointed yellow pepper), Napia (prolific, main season, pointed red pepper), Police (my favourite chilli (large, fairly mild, tasty - a great CSA chilli!), and jalapenos (no explanation required). They will all be filling CSA veg shares from July onwards. We do have some spaces for new members - 15 spaces in fact. Apparently we make caterpillar tunnels now. These lightweight (in terms of mass, and cost) innovations are taking the market gardening world by storm. (You know, the world out there that you see on social media where one can order things - anythings - online, and they are delivered the next day? Yes, except this is here where you can't do that for love or money.) Anyway, what I was saying is that these are a fantastic versatile way to cover growing areas with plastic in winter (and you can lift the sides to vent hot air on those >30°C winter days, after the - 4°C nights!) and shade net in summer. But the real game-changer is that these tunnels can be moved extremely quickly & easily, so one tunnel can do the work of 3 or 4 over the course of the year. 4m wide, 2m high. New baby greens in the cat tunnel 🌱🌱🌱 Arugula and a variety of greens for spring mix (baby kale, tatsoi, mustard) growing away. This is my first planting using our new 5-row Jang seeder (thanks to a Brighter Futures Fund grant from @americanfarmlandtrust 🙏🙏🙏). It will take me awhile to get used to seeing those long vertical rows across the bed instead of the horizontal rows from hand seeding. Still working out the kinks, but this will definitely be a labor (and back 🧘♀️) saving tool compared to hand seeding. Radish and spinach plantings are up too. I tried both of these with the JP-5 as well. So far undecided whether we’ll switch or stick with our old Earthway seeder. A little more trialing and observation to be done! I cleared out the old kale planting yesterday and will be putting down compost on that bed today in preparation for seeding one more bed of radishes. Then our early spring plantings in the cat tunnel will be complete… and we’ll be patiently waiting for them to grow into our first salad greens and radishes of the season 🥗 Outside, the garden is mainly snow free. The earliest I’ll plant is mid-April. There will be a lot of watching the weather between now and then to decide on those first outdoor plantings. It’s been a month since we planted tomatoes in our tunnel and we can’t believe how big they are!😱 The tomatoes in the tunnel are trellised differently than those in the field using an overhead system of roller hooks and string. The roller hooks and string are suspended from the ceiling of the tunnel and the main stem of each tomato plant is gently wound around the string as it grows. We’re still snow covered on the farm (as we should be this time of year) although it’s melting fast with yet another stretch of abnormally mild weather. We don’t plan on planting anything out in the field until mid-April at the earliest and very much weather dependent. The cat tunnel is another story though. This week I watered the kale (first time since November!) and gave it a foliar feeding with some fish-kelp for a little fertility boost. We were impressed the kale survived midwinter neglect, but now I’m hoping with the slowly lengthening days and a little TLC we’ll have kale for the March 23rd @redlodgefarmersmarket 🌱 The rest of the cat tunnel is tarped for some solarization/occultation to terminate what remains of our fall planting of baby greens. In another week or two we’ll peel back the tarps, add compost and reseed with baby greens and radishes for early spring harvest. Finished a deep clean of the seed starting room and fired up some microgreens… just for us for now, but I’ll be starting some larger plantings to sell soon. It’s felt like a big scramble these past few years just to get the farm up and running. Parts of our set up haven’t been the most organized. French scented heirloom carnations are nothing like the carnations you will find in the grocery store. There are things that I grow in my perennial high tunnel that are not tender but are stems I want to have earlier in the season than when these particular things might bloom in the field. There are hardy perennials I adore as fillers, like heirloom Love Parade Yarrow and heirloom White Pearl Yarrow, that I grow in my perennial tunnel and will also be growing in the field this season. This will provide me with a successional harvest, May through August or September (especially if they are cut back hard after their first bloom, providing a second flush). And then there are many things that I grow in the perennial tunnel which are indeed more tender. French heirloom carnations are one of these. This will be their third year and I have been curious about how they fared after our deep freeze. I am watching them come to life and look forward to sharing these once again this season. If you don’t already grow these, certainly consider them. These are vigorous bloomers for me June through September. It is not difficult to provide a low tunnel environment for season extension. Either for cold hardy annuals or for tender perennials. You just need a hoop bender, metal conduit for bending hoops and clear poly. There's nothing more satisfying than freshly woodchiped paths! These are in a second, very windswept, looking caterpillar tunnel. 🌬️ We'll have to do something about this wind-sweep once all the storms have stopped. Both tunnels are presently showing this distorted shape. Our caterpillar tunnels survived the snowstorm! ❄️ Caterpillar tunnels are relatively cheap to build and repair. In the future I’ll only build 7’ tall tunnels, our 8.5’ tunnel is the only one we’ve had trouble with in storms. Luckily it held strong this time! 💪 In a couple weeks we’ll seed onions!
