Throwback to when we had Quail. They were great for our little backyard homestead. They were quiet and easy to care for. The downside is that it took 3-4 quail eggs to make 1 chicken egg, so we needed a lot of eggs to feed our little family. Our Quail lay once per day in the late spring, summer, and early fall. Then, they would take a long winter break. We found it wasn't very cost-effective for our family to raise the quail for meat and eggs. The quail meat was really good also. I'm thankful our family had the opportunity to incubate quail eggs and raise them for meat and eggs. Beeswax candles. ❤️ >> I've been wanting to make these for a long time. Last year I ordered one from Etsy and loved it. Beeswax candles are all natural, have a subtle honey smell, and are long lasting. There are literally hundreds of how-to videos so I'll spare you the details. A few important things to note is to have the correct wick size for the wax type your using and size of the container. Also, make sure your container is heat safe. If you decide to make your own candles, you'll quickly notice that candle making people are serious about their craft. You can get lost in the vast amount of information out there and it can be confusing. It’s so easy to propagate tender herbs like mint & basil in water. This gives you more plants & makes your current plant bushier. Here’s how: 🌿 If your herbs are getting leggy, cut off 4-6inches, making the cut just below a point where leaves are coming out of the stem. 🌿Pinch off the lower leaves. 🌿Place the stem in water in a sunny window. 🌿Tip: I like to make a grid out of strips of masking tape on the top of a small jar. It keeps the stems from falling down in the water. 🌿Wait a few weeks, adding water as needed to keep bottom of the stem in water 🌿When you see 1 inch of white roots, your plant is ready to put in a pot! Alpine strawberries. Are you a fan? They might be my favorite variety. Why are they my favorite ? Man-oh-man do they have a unique and wonderful flavor! While other strawberries I’ve grown have had to be picked at the peak of ripeness to avoid being sour, alpine berries are always sweet and have hints of pineapple flavors. Well, it tastes like pineapple to me at least as well as most of the people who have sampled it while visiting the garden. Another reason I appreciate them is because of where they grow. Not all plants, especially fruits and vegetables, can handle shade. Alpine strawberries thrive in the shade. Why do some people not like them? Well, the berries are small in size. They don’t produce a bumper crop all at once like many other varieties either. Instead, they produce a slow steady stream all summer long which has its pros and cons. I have come to enjoy a handful of berries a week with breakfast, or as a savored snack while I’m weeding. It’s easy to see why you don’t see them in the grocery stores…they simply don’t produce the volume at the same time to warrant selling them. However, I do feel like I get a handful regularly all spring to fall. For a home garden though, it can be a great little addition. What is your favorite kind of strawberry? Lovely to start bringing in the second crop of sweetcorn today 🙂 It was always going to be a bit of a gamble as I sowed in late summer, but apart from a bit of strange & patchy germination, I think I got away with it. Surrounding it with borage helped, I think 🙂 Also, mystery squash is starting to ripen even though it isn't very big, so that's something to look forward to.... And furthermore.... Day 20 (?) post op. I got some work done in the garden with the help of hubby today ❤️ Old pots got emptied, and soil got replenished with some wormy rotted horse poo and neem granules. Some of that will sit in pots till spring, some will be used to top up beds around the garden. Still can’t do any lifting, driving and all the good stuff, but I’m allowed to cook and I’m way more mobile than I was. Fatigue however is kicking my arse, and my brain seems to be made of cotton wool. I pulled these beets today. I roasted these with salt and avocado oil and ate some of them plain but I plan on eating the rest with goat cheese on a salad. The next batch I pull will be pickled! I froze the leaves and will add them in smoothies. In my experience, home grown beets have a stronger mineral flavor which I looove. The ladies are always so excited to transition to their new ‘pasture’ 🐖🌿 We choose to raise our hogs in the woods how they’re accustomed to, which benefits both the hogs and the woods. By rotating the hogs throughout our silvopasture paddocks, they receive necessary shade, a safe shelter & a diverse diet as they forage all while giving back to our land! Ready for a barefoot-in-the-garden, sunburned, homegrown, homemade, soil-to-fork kind of summer 🌻 Also kind of felt like time for an intro post after like four years... Hi! I’m Meaghan - avid gardener, homebaker, novice food preserver - basically interested in all the homestead-y skills without the scary, fearmongering, anti-society aspects. I don’t believe you should have to do it all on your own. I believe humans are meant to thrive in community, not out of it. But we thrive in community with people, animals and plants. So too does community go all the way down to pollinators like carpenter bees and monarchs and funghi like the mycorrhizae that improve soil health. I believe we have a deep need to stick our hands in the dirt — to find our way back to the garden, nourishing our bodies and our souls. If you feel the same, I’d love to be friends! A few fun facts about me while we’re at it — 1. I have a PhD in 17th-century English literature that I use to annoy the people around me by being very very good at scrabble. 2. I’m an active-duty military spouse, so I’m particularly interested in gardening and homesteading and homemaking in frugal, rental-friendly ways. 3. My two garden goals this year are to make as homegrown/homemade of a peanut butter and jelly sandwich as I can — which means growing the peanuts, making the sourdough bread, and canning the jam — and just getting better/more comfortable at canning and preserving in general. 4. I’m currently mom to two critters, but we’re expecting our first human baby this fall! APRIL UPDATE | This season marks the second spring of this urban homestead, and I am loving the progress on my seed starts. This year my gardening goal is to increase yield from my garden so I can experiment with different preservation techniques come harvest time and start monetizing my developing skills. Some obstacles facing this homestead this season are preparing for postpartum right in the middle of the summer and considering bankruptcy to relieve some pressure from the bad debt I've accumulated over the years. Gardening has been a therapeutic release for some of my anxieties regarding my current situation, and my desire to continue pursuing the skill has given me hope that I will make it out on the other side to get where I want to be to fully transition into homesteading full time. Growing in my Garden #1 - Common Lilac (Syringa Vulgaris). I planted this in my front garden from a very young tree and enjoy the sweet smelling flowers every spring. Lilac trees enjoy lots of sun, with a moist but well drained soil. Their maximum height & spread is 4-8 meters, but as you can see from the second photo, Careful pruning has kept it under control. REUSE your glass jars and grow some herbs! 🌿 🌿 You'll need: Glass jars Seeds or seedlings Potting soil Water 🌿 Prepare the jars Thoroughly clean the jars and lids Fill the jars with potting soil to about 3cm from the top Moisten the soil with water until damp but not soaked 🌿 Plant the seeds/herbs For seeds: Place 3-4 seeds in the soil and lightly cover with more soil For seedlings: Carefully remove from original container and place in jar soil Gently firm down the soil and make sure starts are buried up to their necks 🌿 Care for the plants Place jars in sunny location Water when soil becomes dry, taking care not to overwater Most herbs like basil, oregano, thyme prefer dry soil between waterings Most herbs will be ready to harvest in 4-8 weeks 🌿🌿🌿 Snip herbs needed for recipes, salads, etc. Keep trimming to encourage more growth Herbs will regrow all season long with proper care moss & pear 🍐 We do what we can. With the end of Autumn coming and Winter biting at our toes, these no better time to be preparing for the cold and darkening days to come. I absolutely love Autumn, and once would have said it was my favourite season. These days I could no sooner chose a favourite season, as I could a favourite flower or favourite star. Living seasonally definitely comes with its challenges in Melbourne. After a whole jar of beautiful pink rose buds and an entire harvest of lavender moulded this summer, and because its already getting quite damp again, I thought is try drying these beautiful ingredients in my shitty dehydrator and see how it goes. 😅 no research so could be epic! We were lucky to be gifted a trailer load of wood chip which helped refresh our main pathways through the garden. It has been a lot of chopping and changing over the last two years, but it is all coming together. When building anything new we have learnt to be flexible and not be scared to change the plan. We are also not scared to do something different.
