Assembling my tomato trellis. I’ve been using migardener’s method of furring strips for a few years. They work well until late August, I find at that point my tomatoes tend to reach the top and start flopping over, and eventually some supports will fall if they don’t die back by September. So this year instead of sinking them in the ground and leaving them freestanding, I’m attaching them to the sides of my raised beds and using additional furring strips as crossbars for extra support. Any plants that reach the top I can run along the crossbars so they don’t form massive cascades of foliage. I’ve taken a chance on planting roughly half my tomatoes out today. I normally wait until after mid May, but I decided to take the gamble. Covers will be at the ready if the temperature suddenly drops, but here’s hoping I won’t need them. Have you ever tried trench planting your toms? Basically this involves creating a mini trench as opposed to a hole, and you lay the tomato plant along the length of the trench as you back fill it with soil. The reason being, you plant more of the stem, from which more roots will grow. More roots = a stronger, healthier plant. You could of course just dig a deeper hole, but this is much easier. Yay! 🍅14 will live in the greenhouse with assorted chilis, and all other tomatoes, planted in buckets with handles, will be placed outdoors in sunnier climbs. 🍅I really like the buckets with handles, you can move them as needed for best overall growing conditions and maximum sun capture. **Initial unheated greenhouse trial 8 April: 🍅Only 4 gave up the ghost. Shortly after I planted out my tomato transplants, I sowed a row of sunflowers behind them. I intended to create some natural shade for the tomatoes during the heat of summer. At this point, the tomatoes are about 2 feet tall, and the sunflowers are a little taller than that. Already, you can see the shadows cast by the happy sunnies, which are indeed sheltering the tomatoes. These sunflowers will also bring in pollinators, like bumblebees, that will help pollinate my tomatoes through "buzz pollination." Late season peppers pushing through,but they are sure taking a beating with the slightly colder temps kicking in. Not perfect this one, yet the colours on these Violet sparkle is unmatched. They start off a dull yellow and then the anthocyanins sets in, turning them almost fully purple after which the mature to a solid red. Extremely sweet, like really sweet. One of my favorites that I've grown over the past 3 years and they wil be on the list for as long as I can crawl around and dig shallow holes like a zombie. The plants are fairly sturdy and and on the smaller side of the scale,. Fruits will probably max out at around 7cm in length with the shape tappering down to pointy end. The seeds are unfortunately not readily available and can sometime come with a hefty price tag, but if you want an exotic sweet pepper with dazzling colours, empty the pockets or break the piggy bank, they are really worth it. .

Miracle of seeds! The typical tomato seeds last between 5 - 10 years. I placed 6 of these Beefsteak tomato seeds I purchased in 2007 in a moistened peat pellet. Since I didn’t see any sign of germination after nearly a month I thought the seeds were dead😕But lo & behold a seedling sprouted😊👏 These seeds were 17 years old! So never throw out seeds , especially tomato seeds without testing for viability! Putting some tomato plants in the ground. I haven't been a very good tomato gardener this year, I haven't looked after them particularly well. I think I put them into the greenhouse from the house too early, and didn't take them in at night and do it gradually enough. They all seem a bit stunted. Oh well, hopefully in the ground, and with the nights not being as cold, they'll bounce back 🤞🤞 In my efforts to be better at using my greenhouse all year round I showed this garlic last Autumn between the established tomato plants coming to the end of their season. They are coming along nicely so I'm getting this season's tomato plants in. What I'm hoping is that the garlic will be ready to harvest in 6 weeks or so, just as the tomato plants are getting big, and there won't be much competition between them. The first pic is of 12 Amish Paste plants. The second pic is some cordon cherry varieties scattered in around some lettuce that i want to save the seed from. The seedlings gave us a little scare when literally none of them showed up (germinated). So with a little trial and error and a LOT of youtubing, we created the greenhouse effect for some of them, et voila! Deep watering a greenhouse or polytunnel 💦 If you have a greenhouse or polytunnel that has been unused for the winter the beds will be very dry by now. 💦 Bear in mind that watering when you are sowing seeds or planting seedlings in the soil will only wet the surface, it will take a lot more irrigation to address the moisture deficit deeper down. 💦 Large indoor plants like tomatoes or cucumbers have deep taproots that will be looking for moisture below so you will need to build moisture levels back up. 💦 The most effective method is to dig holes of about a spades depth in the soil and fill with water. The pools will slowly drain into the surrounding soil at which point you fill them up again. 💦 When the water takes a long time to drain away, the soil is properly saturated and the holes can be refilled. 💦 Ideally, you would water your beds every few weeks over the winter, even if there is nothing growing in it, to keep the soil life happy. To set the stage for your best tomato harvest yet, it’s essential to provide your tomato plants with the right conditions to thrive. First and foremost, tomatoes crave sunlight, so choose a sunny spot in your garden with at least 6 to 8 hours of direct sunlight per day. They also need well-draining soil that’s rich in organic matter. Prepare the soil by incorporating compost or aged manure to boost fertility and moisture retention. I like to add a handful of epsom salt and blood meal when transplanting. As the plant grows, I pluck off most of the suckers and prune the bottom leaves. This allows good air flow and helps prevent disease. Pruning also lets the plant focus its growth energy on fruit, not extra foliage. This is the first tomato I’ve grown in the greenhouse! Usually, I start my seedlings and move them to the garden once the weather warms up. I’m loving this self watering planter with a built-in trellis. Makes it so easy!
