I know I call my dog a potato brain, but when the neighbor’s bull punched another hole in the fence this morning and half the herd came through, Saga helped me put three cows and their calves back. With no cattle experience before she came to us (my cattle experience was limited to petting haltered dairy cows before these beef cows started trespassing), she is still instinctively chasing the stragglers towards the herd, and looks to me for directions, which we’ve actually trained up while playing fetch. Day 9 Serenity to Mataranka We left our serene Campground early to head off for another long stretch of nothing. All the nothingness got a bit boring, so Greg decided to organize a little scavenger hunt. Pretending to take photos of the nothing out if the window of a driving car, he "accidentally" dropped his phone with credit cards and drivers licence etc. As soon as it hit the ground the cover came out and the cards went everywhere! Greg had 1 hint to where abouts it could be: somewhere near a dry bush in the red dirt. After 30mins on the hunt we found the phone, phonecover and 2 credit cards. Only the driver's licence had to be left behind, but overall a good score, 4 out of 5! After this little entertainment program, we headed of for a pubcrawl. The Daly waters pub is a nice quirky place to visit, and was busier than I've ever seen the dunsborough pub, but that doesn't say much these days. However, the spin-off pink panther pub a couple hundred Ks down the road was as dead as you d expect from any pub in this area, if thats any consolation. A few more hours down the road we went for a swim in the famous mataranka hot springs, which are by now so famous that they feel more like visiting the public pool. Bitter springs, just down the road, was a bit less crowded, but definitely not the tranquil place instagram will show you. Our final pub was the mataranka pub. Run by a south african couple that just took over a couple of days before and already seem to regret it. They pointed us to a nice campspot along the creek just out of town, so this is where we headed out to and set up camp for that night. Beautiful little creek that was too shallow for crocs, so we could safely have a creek-shower and hop in to bed clean for a change. The next morning one of Gregs ex-girlfriends visited our camp. Woke up to COWS in my garden this morning. Must have been spooked by the thunderstorm on Friday night? They’ve been acting strange all weekend. James and my older two children are away, so it was panic station combined with laughter! 😂 Incredibly grateful to have such helpful neighbours who came to my rescue! We are so lucky to live on a wonderful rural street with the nicest people. Many destroyed plants, bergenias trampled on, holes in hedges, bearded Iris’s squashed and perennials eaten! It’s nearly 9 pm and I’m just sitting down to rest for the first time today. • •7 am- steer is out (at my Grandmas) 🐂 •1 pm- after multiple attempts (and him constantly breaking in and out of the fence), he runs off and we cannot find him. Time to call it and hope he returns on his own. 😡🙄 Also the first time I ate all day. •3 pm- pick up a new queen for our queen-less hive 🐝 •4 pm- check hives again and install new queen. 🐝 •5 pm- till between rows of entire lower garden. 👩🌾 •6 pm- make dinner. Scrambled eggs and ice cream. Mom is done for the day. 🥚🍦Kids picked strawberries 🍓 •7 pm- spend an hour weeding in the upper garden. Mike takes the boys on a horseback ride.🐎 •8 pm- shower and bed for the kids.😴 • Pretty sure I’m going to feel it tomorrow! I knew the glass was thick enough but ummmm if wasn’t... that would’ve been the end of me 😱. This was a panoramic shot I took right before the sun set. Fun fact: they like to have all tourists out and on their way before the sun sets as its one scary drive back where cattle are out and about and it isn’t safe. 🗓Today the view has a bit of an ethereal quality when the sun slips behind the clouds. This lifestyle is the same way. Beauty and shadows, tender moments and lurking doubts. 🥩When you enjoy your meal the monetary cost you paid for ingredients ends up being very little per hour that the farmer puts in. It doesn’t cost you more because the stupid cattle decided to field trip in the yard today and be little 💩💩💩. Another epic adventure in cattle wrangling. One heifer in heat caused a ruckus, and as I’d just moved the sheep and dogs into the adjacent paddock, the ruckus worked up the dogs. After dark last night we heard a cow mooing and Jason went out to see if something was up. Five cows had taken off in the dark and the one mooing had been left behind. The fence is definitely functioning (confirmed by an old fashioned touch test today) but when everyone is worked up it just doesn’t seem to matter. Jason tracked by sound but they were deep in the swamp just over our ridge and there was no way to safely herd them in the dark. So this morning we headed out on the four wheeler. Turns out Jason is a pretty good tracker, although we tracked our way right through several front yards. We ended up meeting a whole new contingent of really kind neighbors, one of whom finally spotted the cattle just outside of town, over two miles away from home. They ran to us when we called them and started following Jason right away. We walked them back through the most beautiful ridge between two lakes, back through two yards, across two fields, and back onto our pastures. We were all very exhausted and thirsty by the end, although Jason said he hasn’t had that much fun in ages. Today has been a crazy, fun, busy day. The neighbor’s cows were out and we had to get them back in for him. He doesn’t live right here so we try to keep an eye on things for him. Then, we had some friends coming over to help us get a steer. We are going to raise him for them. Well, we were trying to get the cattle in a corral so we could get him alone in the chute but he wasn’t cooperating because he doesn’t understand what a feed bucket means. After plan A of just getting him in failed miserably, plan B came in to play. I got on Pepper and totally wrangled the steer and the other stragglers into the corral. I’ve never wrangled cattle on horseback before. I’ve only even wrangled cattle once and that was on a four wheeler with my aunt Norma in Oklahoma when I was a kid. That was fun! I used my English saddle because that’s what I’m used to. I’m definitely going to be very sore. Lol I haven’t actively ridden in a few years. After that, our friends @clb1613 came over and we loaded said steer up and brought him home. We put him in the garden fence with Chuck and Sir Loin for now until he settles in. His name is Phil-A. After that, we got some family pictures taken and started to part out the pig that we butchered yesterday. Our friends headed home with some fresh pork chops in hand.
