Artist Gabriela Soelkner has lived on the edge of the Wollumbin National Park for 42 years. She and her partner live a very different life, immersed amongst the trees, rocks and creeks that form part of their property. She creates extraordinary artworks in her studio which is tucked into a rock face on the edge of her property. These paintings are of ancient figures layered with archetypes and wisdom which she has brought to life with paint and collage. I met her when I first went to Wollumbin and we immediately connected. I am thrilled she agreed to come onto the podcast and share her story with us all. She will be exhibiting at the Mist Gallery @mistgallery in Cabarita in May, and you can find out more and see some of her artworks @gabrielasoelkner. Day 79, Kyogle. The decision was made to do a little bit of cruising around on this day! All of the locations we saw this day came as recommendations from either my Dad, or the listeners of @twoflogspodcast. We started out by heading to Condong @stampandgrind for the infamous "Big Dong," which was an exceptionally large brekkie and fueled the day! The next stop was Tyalgum on the northwest side of Wollumbin/Mount Warning. We wandered through little shops and met the loveliest woman who gave us a bunch of travel recommendations for later in our trip. The gate pictured here amazed me. In Murwillumbah, I was told by a bloke at the markets, "If you stand still for too long, you'll go mouldy around here." The humidity and the difference it makes to simple things like a wooden gate is pretty cool, I think. From Tyalgum, we travelled down south through Brays Creek, just through the bottom corner of Wollumbin NP over some pretty dodgy roads that have clearly been flood/slide affected and then east through Byrrill Creek over to Uki. We stopped at the Uki pub, @mountwarninghotel, for a beer and a game of pool. I redeemed myself and our tally is now equal again on the wins front. After leaving Uki, we stopped at Clarrie Hall Dam for a look. Not much in the way of spots to fish without a boat, so we wandered down to the bottom of the dam wall. We saw our first golden orb spider!! There were also hundreds of what I assumed at the time were teeny tiny little frogs, but I later researched, and I think they were cane toads. It's wild how prevalent they are this far south.
