Today's observance of Black History focuses on the Greensboro Sit-ins. The Greensboro sit-ins were a series of nonviolent protests from February 1, 1960 to July 25, 1960, primarily in the Woolworth store—now the International Civil Rights Center and Museum—in Greensboro, North Carolina, ... History.com notes, "The Greensboro sit-in was a civil rights protest that started in 1960, when young African American students staged a sit-in at a segregated Woolworth’s lunch counter in Greensboro, North Carolina, and refused to leave after being denied service. The sit-in movement soon spread to college towns throughout the South. Though many of the protesters were arrested for trespassing, disorderly conduct or disturbing the peace, their actions made an immediate and lasting impact, forcing Woolworth’s and other establishments to change their segregationist policies." It was caused by: "Whites Only" lunch counters at F. W. Woolworth Company. My mom, grandparents and other relatives remembers not being able to sit in Woolworth. Pre-pandemic, I went to the National Center for Civil and Human Rights and participated in their interactive simulation of the Woolworth counter experience. Wow was it an eyeopener! The cover has the picture of the four friends who initiated the sit-in and three books. Two fo the books, Freedom on the Menu by Carole Boston Weatherford with illustrations by Jerome Lagarrigue and Sit-In Whe Four Friends Stood Up by Sitting Down by Andrea Davis Pinkney with illustrations by Brian Pinkney shares the story and the event while A Gift from Greensboro by Quraysh Ali Lansana with illustrations by Skip Hill puts the event in context in today's time with the realization of the events of the past on two friends (one White and one Black) and their liberties post the sit-ins and protests. The National Center for Civil and Human Rights in Atlanta, Georgia. Wow, it is haunting. I nearly cried in the very first room, reading various Jim Crow laws. And then I got to the sit-in counter interactive exhibit, where you hear in surround sound people jeering, taunting, threatening you - your seat vibrates as you’re being “thumped”, spit at… There is a whole room filled with photos of people who died fighting for equality - with kids’ faces among them. I watched as a Black father read plaques of information to his young daughter, exposing the vicious truth that people hate her and will hate her due to nothing but the circumstances of her linage. I thought about my loved ones and theirs, who have been disadvantaged in this world since day one. I thought about how people of my race contributed and continue to fight for a despicable type of power that comes at the cost of others suffering. I thought, “would I have been brave enough to join hands and put my life on the line for my friends?” “Would I have risked imprisonment to love the man I am so fortunate to love today?” At the center of my being, I don’t understand how cruelty so deep and strong exists and is still alive and well. I don’t understand how we can look at a version of ourselves, shades darker, and think they don’t deserve any favors in life. That we should even go so far as to strip them down legally, verbally, and with even the slightest of micro-aggressions. I have been graciously helped by people in my life while learning more about an existence I never have been forced to experience because of my skin. Be respectful and grateful to those with lived experiences who open themselves up again to hurt by sharing their stories with you. Remember also that it is not their burden to teach you. Buy a book, watch a documentary, visit a museum like this. Make yourself uncomfortable. CENTER FOR CIVIL AND HUMAN RIGHTS by Paula Scher In June, 2014 a new 43,000 sq. ft. center, originally envisioned by civil rights leader Evelyn Lowery and UN Ambassador Andrew Young and launched by Mayor Shirley Franklin, opened in Downtown Atlanta next to the Georgia Aquarium on land donated by Coca-Cola. The center uses the American civil rights movement to create a lens for looking at the global state of human rights with hopes of fostering ongoing dialogue as visitors return to their communities. To create a powerful first impression the center’s designers turned to Paula Scher of Pentagram for this entry mural. Design legend and Pentagram partner for 25 years, Scher and her team wanted to highlight the historic role of posters, placards, symbols, and other graphics in the struggle for rights. In July, @mvkatl visited the @thebremanmuseum and met with and learned from Mr. Hershel Greenblat, a Holocaust survivor. He implored to these youth that in addition to being a "witness to his #history", each one of them needed to be a witness to #theirown history. The Atlanta Civil Rights story. Today, we visited Atlanta's National Center for Civil and Human Rights @ctr4chr. What an exceptionally well-designed and engaging museum! The main exhibit compellingly tells the story of the Civil Rights Movement from the early 50s to the death of MLK. I was particularly interested in the ways Atlanta told this story, highlighting its hometown heroes like King, Lewis, Andrew Young and Julian Bond, along with the powerful white men like Mayor Ivan Allen Jr and Coca-Cola's Robert Woodruff, who recognized the practical value of supporting progress, all while acknowledging the cruel state of segregation in Georgia at the time. The center also had some wonderful artwork on display from their recent Juneteenth celebrations. This is a special weekend as the holidays of Passover, Ramadan and Easter are all being celebrated. We are pleased to commemorate the holidays with this beautiful remembrance project of daffodils from our partner the Center for Civil and Human Rights. @centerforcivilandhumanrights According to the Center, “This is an interactive art project where our guests participate by coloring in some daffodil coloring sheets. Once they are finished, the daffodils are added to huge round column in on our 3rd floor loft space. The combined daffodils create a colorful collage in honor of the children who lost their lives during the Holocaust.” At the Center, daffodils line the outside walkway and create a “ribbon of consciousness” between the Center for Civil and Human Rights and the King Center. The Daffodil Project aspires to build a worldwide Living Holocaust Memorial by planting 1.5 million Daffodils in memory of the children who perished in the Holocaust and in support for children suffering in humanitarian crises in the world today. This was during our first night in Atlanta, photo taken early evening. We went out for a walk to see the neighborhood and to find a place to have dinner. Surprisingly, all shops and restaurants (even fastfood) were already closed, save for the 24-hour waffle house (which was also not serving at that time because of change shift) - quite the opposite of Manila and Al Khobar. We ended up eating convenience store meals (microwave food) during our first night. One of the best activities I did in #atlanta last week, not really work but it helps my work. I got recommended to visit the Center for civil and human rights and so I did together with @heathershare on the sunny Saturday. The centre features papers of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr, it covers the history of the civil rights movement in the US, and stories about struggles for human rights around the world today. We can’t separate our work personalities from our private ones, and the world we live in impacts us (maybe more than we might think). As I have diversity and inclusion in my work role, I think it’s important to learn more about how history has affected us, and what ripple effects it’s still creating. Happy for the visit this weekend, and strongly recommend it to others in Atlanta (it’s actually free admission the coming Saturday given #blackhistorymonth). #centerforcivilandhumanrights #diversitymatters #knowyourhistory

I’ve come home 🙏🏽 Day 1 in ATL started with seeing the Bruhz fresh off the plane in the airport! Then we headed to the House and had the chance to learn more about the Morehouse Center for Excellent Education! They are doing amazing work to build a teacher preparation program to get Black men into the classroom. Finally, we visited the Center for Civil and Human Rights where we had the opportunity to learn about the center directly from the Director of Education. Tomorrow, we will meet with the leaders at Atlanta Public Schools whom we will work alongside this semester on pivotal change projects supporting innovation within the district. Day #18 I explored the very small portion of downtown Atlanta that is jam-packed into Pemberton Place. The @georgiaaquarium was amazing! They have whale sharks! How cool is that?!? Fortunately, the afternoon weather was perfect for a stroll through Centennial Olympic Park. The @worldofcocacola was neat and entertaining. They have the vault there with the secret recipe and a tasting station to sample different Coke products from around the world. The Center for Civil and Human Rights was the most impactful. The exhibits were set beautifully, evoking so many emotions. Many different media were used and helped elevate the experience. Not only does it touch on the civil issues here in the US, but from around the world. I highly recommend visiting if you are in Atlanta.
