We're thrilled to hear that Pleasant Bay will be a focus of the Cape Cod National Seashore's eelgrass restoration efforts.💧Though our waters have lost nearly 9,000 acres of eelgrass beds since the 1950s, researchers are working to find donor plants from local, healthy, climate change-resistant eelgrass beds to restore underwater meadows. This will improve erosion control and habitat for shellfish and fin fish. Skim feeding North Atlantic right whales. On Friday, myself and a group of amazing naturalists had the most spectacular viewing of this critically endangered species less than 60 yards from shore. With only around 350 individuals left on the planet, easily 5% of them were seen along the shores of Provincetown during our time there!

Words can’t even describe the emotions I felt this weekend. I met amazing new friends and spent time with a lot of different species of whales, including the critically endangered North Atlantic Right Whale. We are celebrating Earth Week with good news! MassBays is excited to award funding to five awardees under the Healthy Estuaries Grant Program. This funding provided by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Awardee #5 is Salem State University, in collaboration with Salem Sound Coastwatch and the Center for Coastal Studies! Salem State University, in collaboration with Salem Sound Coastwatch and the Center for Coastal Studies, will work together to study “legacy” nutrients in the sediments of Salem Harbor. The researchers, led by Professor Brad Hubeny, hypothesize that nitrogen and phosphorus sequestered at the bottom of the harbor are released seasonally to the water column, leading to phytoplankton blooms, decreased water clarity, and eutrophication of the embayment. “This research is important to the local community as it will help to improve water quality in Salem Harbor, and the innovative methods being developed can be applied to study other water bodies having similar eutrophication issues,” states Renee Veresh, Salem State researcher and laboratory associate. #earthweek2024 #massbaysnep #salemstateuniversity #salemsoundcoastwatch #centerforcoastalstudies #healthyestuaries PHOTO CREDIT: Juniper Point, Salem Harbor. by Carole McCauley

@ptownfilm & @coastalstudiesptown team up for second annual Planet Ptown Environmental Film Series featuring INUNDATION DISTRICT, IN THE WHALE and RESCUING OUR OCEANS THROUGH RECYCLED ART. The series begins Saturday, April 20 at 11am with the new documentary, INUNDATION DISTRICT directed by David Abel and Andy Laub. The film looks at rising seas and the implications of one city’s decision to ignore the threats posed by climate change and spend billions of dollars building a new waterfront district - on landfill and at sea level. The screening will be followed by a Q&A with filmmaker David Abel. David Abel returns Sunday, April 21 at 11am to present and discuss his 2023 documentary, IN THE WHALE, “the greatest (true) fish story ever told”. The movie details the account of Michael Packard’s experience of being swallowed by a whale, and what happened to him after being spit out. RESCUING OUR OCEANS THROUGH RECYCLED ART by Johnny Bergmann explores how Cape Cod artists have come together to create art out of detritus in an effort to bring awareness to what individuals can do to help. It screens Monday at 7pm followed by a conversation with the filmmaker and scientists from the Center for Coastal Studies. The CCS Marine Fisheries Research Program, with assistance from @americorps_cape_cod, monitors the invasive green crab population weekly at Salt Pond in Eastham, MA. Sampling two weeks ago turned up a less common marine invasive species: the Asian shore crab, Hemigrapsus sanguineus. Asian shore crabs are native to the Western Pacific Ocean and have been documented in the US since 1988. They spend their first month after hatching as free-floating larvae which enables them to be transported great distances. Asian shore crabs prefer to live in and around rocks and cobble but, as demonstrated by the one we saw at Salt Pond, can be found in soft sediment. The crab pictured is female, as indicated by her broad, rounded abdomen when seen from beneath. #centerforcoastalstudies #marinefisheriesresearch # marinescience #marineinvertebrates #invasivespecies #asianshorecrab #americorpscapecod

In collaboration with local fishermen, the CCS Marine Fisheries Research (MFR) program deployed 24 passive collectors this spring in southwestern Cape Cod Bay. The collectors were made of coated-wire mesh, so only animals smaller than the mesh size were able to enter. Filled with rocks, the collectors essentially function as miniature artificial reefs to attract juvenile lobsters. The collectors were deployed at three different depths in the bay to see if there’s a relationship between depth and density of juvenile lobsters. This fall, the MFR team retrieved the collectors and found several juvenile lobsters (including the one pictured above!) and a variety of other animals, including fish and crabs, all of which were counted, measured, and returned to the bay. While one year of data is insufficient to draw any firm conclusions, the MFR team looks forward to continuing this project in future years. As always, stay tuned for more stories about how we’re working together to understand, protect, and preserve our oceans here at the Center for Coastal Studies! #centerforcoastalstudies #marinefisheriesresearch #marinescience #capecodbay #lobster #juvenilelobster #sciencecommunication #marineecology #marineinvertebrates #foryoupage

Allan, one of Lady Oracle’s offspring, is seen swimming in the company of his family group in December 2022. The previous year, we believed he had departed Dominica to become a bachelor. However, he was still in the company of his family a year later. I suspect that he remain close to his social unit because the two newborn calves from Unit A1 died sometime in early 2022. This reasoning is speculation on my part, but he is relatively old for young male to remain part of his maternal family unit. It will be interesting to see if he is still there during this year’s field session. #whales #spermwhalesdominica #ocean #marinebiology #blue #centerforcoastalstudies #spermwhale

Tails that tell Tales! Did you know that we can identify individual humpback whales and know many by name? Since the 1970’s Gulf of Maine, humpbacks, part of the larger North Atlantic humpback whale population, have been extensively studied using photo identification techniques. The underside of the tail or fluke has unique pigmentation patterns. Researchers photograph these unique patterns and compare them to documented whales in curated catalogs that include thousands of individuals. This technique helps us understand more about their migration patterns, life span, calving rates, health conditions, behavior, and habitat use. Understanding their life history allows us to continue protecting the species. Gulf of Maine whales have been named by watch captains, naturalists, and scientists for decades. They are named based on a specific mark the stands out to eye when they fluke. Bar Harbor Whale Watch Company hosts interns that work as deckhands but also collect data that contributes to the North Atlantic Humpback Whale Catalog curated @alliedwhale and the Gulf of Maine Catalog managed by @coastalstudiesptown. These photos feature some of the whales seen on our whale watch trips so far this season. WHALE WEEK LECTURE, August 2 @ 6pm Spinnaker: An Entanglement Story, presented by CCS Marine Education Director Jesse Mechling at Highland House Museum, Truro in partnership with Truro Historical Society as part of Whale Week 2023. Spinnaker was a humpback whale who spent much of her life in the Gulf of Maine. She was known to have been entangled in fishing gear at least four times during her short life and was disentangled by the Center for Coastal Studies Marine Animal Entanglement Response (MAER) team three times. Despite all efforts, the hidden, long-term effects of her second-known entanglement were lethal, and she died in 2015 at the age of 11. Spinnaker’s skeleton was preserved and is on permanent display here at the Center for Coastal Studies. She has a powerful message to deliver about the lives of whales in the modern world. Free, all welcome, donations appreciated. #whale #whaleweek #entangled #humpbackwhale #centerforcoastalstudies #Provincetown #Truro

After quietly filming members of unit A1 for several minutes, we were joined by a film crew from a well known photography magazine. Their lead videographer worked while dangling his legs and long fins directly below him, which disrupted Accra who had been sleeping close to the surface. The agitated juvenile surfaced and took aim with her flukes directly at the intrusive photographer. Although she did not land her tail on top of him, she made it clear that his presence was unwelcome. While positioning with legs down in the water makes filming more stable, it is disruptive to sperm whales who need to rest after their rigorous hunting activities. Satisfied that they had ‘gotten their shot’, the film crew promptly left, seemingly oblivious to the fact that they had disrupted the sleeping pattern of the whales whom they were there to film to promote in-water whale tourism in Dominica. We continue to observe and record disruptions to the whales’ natural behaviors as commercial tourism of this kind is increasing in Dominica. #whales #spermwhales #spermwhalesdominica #marinemammals #centerforcoastalstudies

We will learn about how this marsh has changed over the past several millennia and how it might change in the future. Please bring water, sunscreen, bug spray, a hat, and boots or water shoes that can get wet and muddy! We are asking for a $25 Donation to participate in this event which goes to the Center for Coastal Studies to support their continued work and research. Meet at the Provincetown Inn, and we will walk over together to the marsh. 🦈 Field Trip Day! 🦈 Environmental Science students traveled alongside Marine Biology students to Provincetown today! First students stopped at the Center for Coastal Studies @coastalstudiesptown to learn about whale disentanglement and the humpback “Spinnaker” which is a fully preserved skeleton of an 11 year old humpback whale. Then students traveled to the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy @a_whiteshark where they learned about one of the ocean’s top predators: the Great White Shark. Cape Cod is a global hotspot for white sharks because of our large seal populations. White sharks play a crucial role in the ecosystem as apex predators, and their presence can help maintain balance within the food chain. Studying their behavior, migration patterns, and population can provide valuable insights into the health of the ocean environment and the impact of human activities on marine ecosystems. 🌊🦈🐋 . . . . . . . . . . #FieldTripAdventures #OceanEducation #marinebiology #education #ocean #capecod #provincetown #sharks #whitesharks #whales #humpbackwhale #science #environmentalscience #barnstablehighschool #highschool #centerforcoastalstudies #awsc

Canopener displays her impressive teeth as she swims with little Hope in tow. Adult cachalots contain 36-60 teeth, all of which rest in the lower jaw and fit into sockets in the upper jaw. Their rows of teeth are situated very close together while the short, fat tongue rests farther back at the base of the mouth. Sperm whales are monophyodonts, which means that they have only one kind of tooth. The conical, banana-shaped teeth can reach 8 inches long and weigh up to two pounds. #whales #spermwhales #cachalots #ocean #underwaterphotography #centerforcoastalstudies #spermwhalesdominica

And just like that, a decade’s worth of lobster traps and fishing gear are off Cuttyhunk. (Well, okay not quite just like that: after a lot of work, tons of preparation, heavy lifting, sweat, blood but I think no tears, 25 or so people, 6 days, and the cooperation of a village, if that’s how you take ‘just like that,’ that’s how I mean it) 😉 Amazing work by Laura Ludwig @coastalstudiesptown @ccsdebrisbrigade, along with Michelle Carvalho from @cuttyhunksteamacademy, Seth and Charmaine from @cuttyhunkshellfish and the students and their professor from Cornell, along with some artists and other folk. The island has lost of few tons of weight. So glad I got to see the cleanup through to the end today… Can’t wait to go back for a visit that doesn’t entail lugging debris home with me. (As if). Lol. #centerforcoastalstudies #cuttyhunk #cuttyhunkbeachbrigade #beachcleanup #ebbtheplastictide #ebbthetide #ayearofplastic

Ariel swims with her best friend, SnowWoman’s calf. The little male has developed a great deal of confidence in the presence of his older playmate. Ariel indicated a preference for this youngster even when he was a tiny calf. Interestingly, he was the only one of three calves from Unit A born within six months to survive into their second year. #whales #spermwhales #dominica #marinebiology #centerforcoastalstudies #missionblue #ocean #underwaterphotography

Prior to the pandemic, every year I would donate a portion of my sales to a marine life non-profit. So now that things are somewhat near normal, this year I will be donating to the Center for Coastal Studies. I will also have a donation jar on my table at every event I do this summer. @centerforcoastalstudies #theduneshack #centerforcoastalstudies #capecod #rightwhale

On Wednesday our MAER team worked with a badly entangled North Atlantic right whale in Cape Cod Bay and was able to remove 200 feet of rope from the whale, although it remains entangled. The team is monitoring the weather and sea conditions and hopes to try to further disentangle the whale. #centerforcoastalstudies #NARW #capecod #capecodbay #entanglement

On Monday, CCS staff visited Cuttyhunk Island to conduct aerial drone surveys of the south-facing coastline to locate fishing gear above the tide line. Next week, a group of volunteers, including college students, artists, and members of the local commercial fishing community, will begin the arduous task of removing the piles of debris from the shoreline, documenting and sorting it before disposing of it responsibly. Although the CCS Marine Debris and Plastics Program has been eliminating ghost gear off of Provincetown shores and from Cape Cod Bay for years, this is its first project on Cuttyhunk. It came about when island residents, through the MA Environmental Police, approached the Center for its help. These days, most commercial fishing gear contains plastic elements and the goal of the project is to remove plastic debris from the fragile habitat of the island. Many thanks to our partners, Cuttyhunk STEAM Academy - An Island Classroom, Cuttyhunk Shellfish Farms, Buzzards Bay Coalition, Mass Audubon, Cornell University, the Massachusetts Environmental Police, artists, and solid waste experts. Patrick Moran, of the MA Environmental Police, stands in front of a pile of lobster traps on Cuttyhunk island’s shoreline in October of 2021. #centerforcoastalstudies #cuttyhunk #cuttyhunkchatter #marinedebris #ghostfishinggear

We welcome the team from the Center for Coastal Studies to our island April 2 for a week long effort to remove marine debris and ghost fishing gear from our shores. As oyster farmers we have a front row seat to the detritus of human consumption washed up on our coastline. Our livelihood, like many others, is directly linked to the health of our environment, and so we strive every day to leave our Farm better than we found it, but clearly we can do better. Here is a sample of items we picked up off the beach yesterday. #centerforcoastalstudies #marinedebris #ghostgear #cuttyhunk

1985 Provincetown ‘Trash Fish Banquet’ t-shirt. Not for Sale. In 1979 a group of chefs in Provincetown conceived of the ‘Trash Fish Banquet’ as a benefit event for the Provincetown Center for Coastal Studies. Inspired by the ‘trash’ buckets of fisherman’s bycatch the chefs would gather daily along the town wharf, the concept was to employ these lesser known species in interesting dishes that would help create demand for overlooked seafood and hopefully bolster conservation efforts towards pressured species in the process. The final TFB took place in 1999, before transitioning to a new, less colorful identity as the ‘Local Bounty Banquet’. ▫️ ▫️ ▫️ ▫️ ▫️ #vintageclothing #vintagetee #vintagetshirt #vintagecapecod #capecodhistory #trashfishbanquet #lobsterpotptown #ptown #centerforcoastalstudies #capecodfishing #capecodconservation #coastalconservation #1985 #capecodlife #shellfishermen #commercialfisherman #notforsale

The North Atlantic Right Whales (Eubalaena glacialis) are critically endangered and need our help. They get their name because back in the whaling days they were considered the “right” whale to hunt and kill. These large baleen whales are filter feeders that only feed on tiny zooplankton called copepods. With less than 350 individuals left on the entire planet I want to spread awareness about these beautiful creatures. April 24th is officially right whale day and I’m so excited! This first photo the big guy is flipper slapping:) Note:both of these photos were taken by the talented Amanda Johnston (my camera sucks) #northatlanticrightwhale #provincetown #centerforcoastalstudies #rightwhaleday

We are partway through NOAA's Seal and Sea Lion Week so, it's only appropriate to highlight the two species of seals that are commonly found along the southeastern Massachusetts coast. Harbor seals (Phoca vitulina) are seasonal visitors. In late spring, harbor seals will head north to Maine to pup and then breed later in summer. Gray seals (Halichoerus grypus) have a year-round presence in southeastern Massachusetts, with both breeding colonies and seasonal haul outs present. In the winter and early spring and again in the fall, both species overlap at haul-outs in Massachusetts. Photo taken by CCS Seal Program under NOAA Permit 21719. Pictured are a mix of harbor and gray seals at Jeremy Point, Wellfleet, MA on March 3, 2023. #centerforcoastalstudies #sealandsealionweek

🐋 On Saturday the CCS right whale aerial survey team spotted the first mother and calf pair to arrive in Cape Cod Bay this year. EGNO 3293/Porcia is a 21-year-old right whale who was first seen with her new calf in late December off the coast of Georgia. Eleven new right whale calves have been identified this year (and a 12th calf perished) in the Southeast US where they are born. Each surviving calf represents another step toward the population's recovery. via: 📸@coastalstudiesptown #Centerforcoastalstudies  #NARW  #whales  #capecodbay  #capecod #instagood #love #scenesofnewengland #newengland #newportbuzz #whale #ocean #rightwale #rightwales
