Black Medick. I seem to be continuing relentlessly down this weedyweirdo path. Reading John Clare for the first time is an influence on this (thank you @hambergerrobert !) as is my zen practice of noticing and honouring EVERYTHING regardless of whether it’s ‘good’ or ‘bad’ / ‘beautiful’ or ‘ugly’ etc. Moving out of the city has also had an impact, and the messages we keep getting about dying species…. If we don’t notice species in the first place, how will we ever conserve them? Plus - weeds lend themselves to being symbols of everything humble and outcaste. So how could I not love them?! #zen #buddhist #zenbuddhist #johnclare #ecopoet #poet #ecopoetics #amateurbotanist #climatecrisis #eco #queernature #queernaturalist #botany #weeds #weedyweirdo #wildflowers #queerbuddhist #queerpoet #queerwriter #environment #green #nature #conservation #belper #countryside #ecology

Tamolitch Blue Pool | “A lava flow from Belknap Crater 1,600 years ago buried a 3 mile (4.8 km) stretch of the McKenzie River between Carmen Reservoir and Tamolitch Falls. The river resurfaces at Tamolitch Pool at the base of dry Tamolitch Falls, seeping up to the surface through the porous lava, creating a pristine turquoise blue colored pool. The water, a chilly 37 degrees Fahrenheit (2.8 C) on average, reflects the surrounding cliffs covered with alder and evergreen trees. While the falls are dry the majority of the time, during wet winters the river can flood over the lava bed and Tamolitch Falls will flow. With the popularity of Blue Pool, please help protect this area and preserve the experience for you and for future visitors. Practice Leave No Trace Principles during your visit. ” (Via @u.s.forestservice) . . . #BluePool #tamolitchbluepool #mckenzieriver #willamettenationalforest #oregon #cascademountains #outsidewithpride #pridemonth #rainbowflag #gayswhohike #publiclands #instagay #outdoorsareforeveryone #neverstopexploring #optoutside #thriveoutside #gohike #gayhiker #queernaturalist #exploreoregon

The @ptownbusinessguild & The Center for Coastal Studies @coastalstudiesptown invite you to explore wild side of Ptown with many of its Queer Naturalists as part of our Camp Provincetown schedule of events this summer! Marsh March: Saturday, May 27th at 12 Noon Salt marshes are unique habitats at the intersection of land and sea, supporting biodiversity, improving water quality, and providing coastal protection. Katie Castagno @katiecastagnomusic , director of the Land-Sea Interaction Program at the Center for Coastal Studies, will guide us in a 45-minute "Marsh March" to explore the West End Marsh. West End Marsh is at the forefront of climate change, facing threats of rising sea levels and increased stress from predators. We will learn about how this marsh has changed over the past several millennia and how it might change in the future. Please bring water, sunscreen, bug spray, a hat, and boots or water shoes that can get wet and muddy! We are asking for a $25 Donation to participate in this event which goes to the Center for Coastal Studies to support their continued work and research. Meet at the Provincetown Inn, and we will walk over together to the marsh. #tbt to the time that i had the privilege to help out a local conservation biologist in a rare alkali meadow. We picked up trash and pulled up invasive, non-native weeds. We did this as part of the California Naturalist course, offered by the University of California's Division of Agriculture and Natural Resources. When i first started getting outdoors, and exploring the natural world on my own, i considered myself just a hiker. But I've always been a curious person who seeks knowledge. So, of course, the more I hiked, the more I saw the same plants and animals, and the more I wanted to know what they were. I photographed what I saw, and tried to identify and learn about them when I got home. This opened up a whole new world to me. I learned about species, about plant communities, and about biomes. I learned about invasive species, threatened species, habitat loss. I have also come to understand, to my disappointment, that the hiking community at large do not really have nature's best interests at heart. Hikers frequently express disdain towards ecosystems that they deem unworthy of hiking. They view mountain peaks as places to be "conquered", or "bagged". They blast beautiful and sensitive locations out to millions on social media in order to get likes and views, and bring unsustainable hordes of people who all want the same selfie. They use their platforms with thousands or millions of followers, not to educate others how to appreciate and care for natural habitats, but to garner personal fame and just post their own faces. They tag rocks with graffiti, throw their trash into the bushes, carve their names into tree trunks, trample wildflowers in their sundresses, cause erosion to unofficial use trails, scare away wildlife with their off-leash dogs, blast their music into the forest without others' consent, the list goes on and on. Continued in comments.

To send off the year and set an intention for a beautiful new year, I’d like to share a few of my favorite botanical encounters from 2022! My love for California native plants is very strong like my love for our birds, even if it isn’t always as visible. May your new year be colorful and full of life like these native wildflowers and shrubs! •1 of 3: Basin and Range Blooms, June• The first image depicts a flatbud prickly poppy (Argemone munita). The second image depicts a desert globemallow (Sphaeralcea ambigua). The last photo is of the view from where these flowers were found, the White Mountains of the western Great Basin. #nativeplants #canativeplants #botany #queernaturalist #naturalist #wildflowers #poppies #cawildflowers

There were a number of porky damaged birch trees in this area which I dont usually see. Typically, I see them go for spruce and pine even when birch is available. You can see that they chip off most of the outer bark, and chew down to the cambium, just short of the actual wood. No doubt, one loses a quill or two while engaged in such a task. #porcupine #porkies #newworldporcupine #americanporcupine #quillpig #pokeybear #phloem #innerbark #treeeater #cambium #eattrees #barkeaters #betula #birch #acadianforest #animaltracking #animalsign #readingnature #queernaturalist #intheforest #inthefield #fieldnote #naturediary #knowyourland #mikmaki #uncededterritory #thisismikmaki

This weekend was wild. I did some of the best bass fishing I've ever done. (Caught 5 big ones but could only keep these two biggins because of length requirements) 🎣 I caught a snapping turtle the size of a basketball in the work parking lot and moved him to some water without losing a finger. 🤙🐢 And we watched a deer swim across the river right in front of our kayaks! 🦌🛶 it was one of the coolest things I've seen! #fishingtrip #fishing #fishinginthecity #riverfishing #riverpeople #kayakfishing #kayaking #nature #arkansasoutdoors #queernaturalist #outdoorsforeveryone #wildlife #livewild

CW: animal death and meat harvesting. A few weeks ago I harvested my first deer of the season with my new deer rifle: a @_mossbergcorp .270 He looked like a doe from 275 yards away, but once we got upon him we realized he was a button buck, or a young immature buck whose antlers are just nubs that have not broken the skin, known as pedicles. He still provided us with 50-60 pounds of meat that will last us through the winter. Pictured is me with the deer, or ahwi, and my rifle with the deer. We thanked him for his contributions to the world and to our own lives. There is also a short video of us removing the skin, and a picture of the meat he yielded. Thank you young ahwi for your presence on this earth.

White tail deer tracks 🦌🍂🍁🌰 It's deer season in the Ozarks and I couldn't be more excited. White tail deer are some of my favorite animals. They're such beautiful creatures and a staple in the diet of those who lived here before us. Have you filled any of your deer tags this year? These guys are some of my favorite: pearl oyster mushrooms, or Pleurotus ostreatus! I'll always try to show you guys foods that are in season, and these dudes are the shining pearls of the fall and winter for me. They typically grow on deciduous trees but sometimes grow on conifers, like you see here! It's best to gently cut them at the base of where they are growing to cut away the dirt and tree bits. It's also best to get the dirt off before bagging them, which I didn't do here. 😂 the biggest toxic oyster lookalike mushroom is the jackolantern mushroom! *Remember to always use multiple sources to confirm the identification of a mushroom species, including consulting experienced mushroomers. Always cook wild mushrooms thoroughly and eat just a few the first time you try a new species. Set aside a mushroom or two to keep in case you do get sick and need to show a doctor what you ate.*

Yesterday was my first day of bow season and I got to return to the woods that I grew up in, my family land, with the old wooden recurve bow that belonged to my great great grandfather. 🏹 We didn't lay eyes on any deer but we saw plenty of signs that they come into these woods to eat acorns and persimmons. We also did some prep work on my brother's land for deer season, which is one of my favorite places in the world. 🌎 🌰🍁🍂🦌🏹 #deerhunting #ethicalhunting #huntergatherer #deerseason #huntforfood #ethicalmeat #themotherland #backtothewoods #outdoorsforeveryone #queernaturalist

June is pride month! In honor of pride month, we are highlighting a person who identifies as part of the queer community every week. This week, we introduce you to Kunal Palawat. Palawat uses the pronouns they/them and is a terrestrial biogeochemist as well as a self proclaimed soil nerd. . . Palawat works in Tucson, Arizona at the University of Arizona. There, they study soil and earth pollution in relation to the community, public health, and environmental justice. They also are particular interested in the relationship BIPOC have with their environment. Palawat works at the Critical Ecology Lab. This lab creates an equal work space for queer people of all ethnic backgrounds. The Critical Ecology Lab works on many different projects, but Palawat works there because it "centers the environmental impacts of oppression/liberation and aims to do research in a radically relational, community-centered, socially just way." For Palawat, the environment isn't separated from humanity. Instead, humanity and the environment are connected and intertwined. They need to be studied together in ways that allow all peoples to feel represented. . . . Do you know anyone we should highlight during pride month? Let us know in the comments section! #westvalleyotudoorlearningcenter #wvoutdoorlearningcenter #wvolc #critical_ecology #soilecology #science #pridemonth #nature #outdooreducation #queernaturalist #queerscientist
