Leprechaun’s Elixir 🍀 , an original recipe. Was dabbling last night to create a “green” cocktail for the #drunkenshamrock2022 that @62ndcocktails, @booze_ontherocks, @robimx and @the.whiskey.nerd put up this year. Simple rules. Must be green, Irish ingredients or garnish. There is another I am working on but this quick one worked out well enough to share. Most automatically assume Irish ☘️ Whiskey 🥃 for the Irish ingredient. Even with one of the challenger supporters being whiskey 🥃 focus I threw caution to the wind and made a botanical flavour monster with Irish Gin. The tea and juniper of the gin pop, while the white pepper, rosemary, honeysuckle, oris root and other herbaceous flavours of the green chartreuse flood the palate. Hint of mint and tart lime dancing along. 😋 Not neon green but close enough. Painstaking, finickity job, to have a great deal of patience, live quietly in isolation, Chartreux (the breed of cats), Carthusian (monk) = all are translated as “certosino” in Italian, but certosino is also a Bolognese panforte (spice cake) and a type of marquetry on furniture and boxes widespread in the 14th and 15th centuries. Here on Drinkstagram Chartusian for sure has only one meaning with two colours: either it is Green or it is Yellow and at any account it is that unique Elixir called Chartreuse. Have you ever read the history behind it? Quite fascinating on one side and on the other its genesis fits so well in the traditions of the homemade herbal elixirs and medicines. Ever noticed that all peoples and cultures on this Earth of ours have appointed great respect and importance to herbs, flowers, berries and roots? Not only because some were yummy. Some were recognized to have properties that healed or at least helped in certain situations: you had a cold, fever, stomachache, tooth ache, you had a wound somewhere and so forth and so on. There was no Big Pharma yet and no Medicine with capital letters, there sometimes was Faith and mostly Fate. But: Plants could help! And foraging them meant having quite a vast knowledge. In the Old World it was the monks and nuns that “happened” to have access to this vast knowledge. We will delve into this aspect in a few days with our next Cocktail. Inspired by Dave Arnold’s @cookingissues specs in his “Liquid Intelligence” we carbonated Chartreuse. With his words: This is the simplest expression possible: Chartreuse and water with a hint of lime. I call it the…. Chartruth 3 ¼ oz water 1 ¾ oz Green Chartreuse (@chartreuse_uk) ½ oz clarified lime juice 1-2 drops of saline solution Since carbonated drinks are diluted before chilling them, combine all ingredients except the clarified lime juice and chill to between -5° and -10°C. Carbonate – we did it with the method least liked by Arnold: an @isiculinary whipper. Add the lime juice when pouring into your chilled flute. Enjoy & Stay Bubbly! *Unpaid mention of brands*

Chartreuse 1975 VEP - Viellissement Exceptionnellement Prolongé - meaning exceptionally long ageing. The liquid is aged for a minimum of 8 years in oak casks further developing and enhancing the complex flavours. Each bottle is individually numbered and stamped with a wax seal. This would have been bottled in the mid to late 1980s and would have developed in the bottle since then. Ive been fortunate enough to taste old Chartreuse back to the late 19th century and it is an utterly fascinating liqueur which undeniably develops in the bottle over time, making it one of the most sought after spirits for enthusiasts and collectors. One thing I realized recently is that I tend to almost exclusively share gin or whiskey drinks but who can blame me when they're so good? Here's another one, this is the Valerie's Rose cocktail from @anonymous_bar in Prague. With a base of London dry gin you add some white wine, fresh lime, simple syrup, chartreuse elixir, and rose lemonade to make this beautifully light and refreshing drink which fit well for the rather warm evening.

Have Dutch, Will Travel. Watching the Japanese anime 'Bartender' and getting itchy hands to make cocktails. I wanted to try the combination of sweet and savory with Zuidam 8 year old Genever, Ramazotti amaro, chamomile grappa liqueur, chartreuse elixir, pickled olive brine and lemon juice. It worked very nicely, the sweetness and oak from Genever are up front, it's sweet and herbal with a slight saltiness. If you can get hold of, or can make your own pine cone/needle liqueur, you should try this. In the Woods: 1 1/2 Oz gin, 3/4 Pine liqueur. Optional (but prefered) two dashes of Chartreuse Élixir Végétal. Rosemary garnish. Not the perfect gin match for this though, looking to try it with something less floral maybe.
