• Vҽɾԃҽʝσ • The hunt for a crisp, breezy white wine very often ends in sauvignon blanc. But what if it didn’t? What if your gleaming, empty wine glass was happy to receive a cold stream of something else? I’d like to propose a bottle of verdejo (the grape is Spanish, so that ‘j’ is pronounced as a breathy ‘h’). It’s citrussy, with a smooth mouthfeel, and is often hailed as Iberia’s answer to sauvignon blanc – but it has a bit more going for it than that. Where sauvignon can be screechy and attention-seeking, verdejo is calm and unruffled – just the thing you need at the end of the day. En Padilla de Duero, a 750 metros de altitud media, se encuentra el viñedo de 40 hectáreas con el que la bodega Cruz de Alba elabora sus vinos; un viñedo de Tempranillo dividido en 18 parcelas y rodeado de pinares, que está conducido en espaldera y cultivado de forma ecológica desde 2006, siguiendo los preceptos de la biodinámica desde 2008. Hoy vamos a centrarnos en una de las parcelas del viñedo de Cruz de Alba, más concretamente en la parcela donde nace Fuentelún 2018. Se trata de una viña plantada a 700 metros de altitud, cuyas espalderas se alinean de norte a sur y donde las cepas, de casi 40 años de edad, hunden sus raíces en suelos de arena suelta con arcilla y limo, pobres en materia orgánica. Cruz de Alba se refiere a 2018 como “el año de la bonanza”. Fue una añada con unas condiciones climatológicas idóneas para el cultivo de la vid. El invierno fue frío, mayo lluvioso y junio soleado, todo lo cual permitió que las uvas llegaran al envero en excelente estado. Septiembre fue cálido y seco, lo que favoreció una buena maduración de la uva. Las frías noches del mes de octubre ayudaron a la concentración y la coloración de la piel. La lluvia respetó la vendimia y comenzó a caer justo cuando ésta ya había terminado. Fuentelún 2018 se presenta en copa con un color rojo picota intenso. En nariz encontramos fruta negra fresca acompañada de notas de monte bajo y especias; en segundo plano, encontramos cacao y notas tostadas. En boca tiene una buena acidez y un tanino pulido, ligeramente rústico, en un trago fresco, frutal y amable; un trago equilibrado que llena la boca y te transporta a unos viñedos situados al sur del Duero, donde las vides conviven en perfecta armonía con su entorno. _____ 🇬🇧 English version in the comments below.

⛈️⛈️ It’s been pretty stormy lately but this hearty combo helped us weather through it! 2021 Andremily Mourvèdre ➕Spanish-style lamb stew. The wine showed notes of cherries, blueberries, dark chocolate, vanilla; dense weight balanced with M+ acidity. It did take quite a few hours (3~ hrs) to open up. Then the fruits became more mellow and oak notes got blended in better. We enjoyed another really great meal at our favorite vegan restaurant in Santa Barbara, @mesaverdesb . I’m trying to eat my way through their menu, and I will tell you…EVERY dish is fantastic!! This day, for lunch, I had mushroom and brussel sprout tacos, while Randy had the jackfruit chorizo version. This rosé from Cornas, France, a lovely blend of Syrah and Mouvedre, was perfect with both. Even if you do not subscribe to a vegan diet, put this restaurant high on your list of great places to eat in Santa Barbara!
Al bijna 25 jaar kom ik een paar keer per jaar in Malaga. En wat heb ik de stad zien veranderen! Vooral op culinair gebied is Malaga een ‘rising star’. Tuurlijk, veeg me op voor een simpele schaal boquerones fritos, of pulpo. Heerlijk! Maar zo af en toe iets verfijnder is ook wel lekker toch? Nou, dan kan je je lol op. Zo kwamen we deze keer terecht bij @restaurantemnl Het is vanuit het centrum tien minuten gezellig wandelen, de berg op. Achter het Gibralfaro, het kasteel van Malaga. Dit moderne restaurant (sinds 2022) met prachtig uitzicht over de haven is echt van een next level en ik begrijp niet dat Michelin dit nog niet heeft opgepikt. Kwestie van tijd. De wijnen en tapas zijn van hoog niveau, gebaseerd op de Andalusische keuken met een moderne twist. Ik proefde ansjovis op kristalbrood, pipirrana; een lokale salade met avocado en Japanse vinaigrette. Een bizar lekkere steak tartaar, rode mul met amandelsaus, een stukje buikspek met tonkatsu jus en de Picanha met asperges. Wow! Veel bijpassende, lokale wijnen op de kaart, zoals de wijnen van @bodegalosfrutales en @bodegadonafelisa weer eens wat anders dan een Rioja of Ribera. Ook fraaie Godello’s op de kaart, ‘want die gaan altijd goed met vis’. Kortom, een absolute aanrader als je in Malaga bent. De prijzen liggen iets hoger dan in ‘normale’ tapas-zaken, maar het is nog altijd veel voordeliger dan in NL. Reken op zo’n 75 euro pp voor 5 gangen incl wijnen. En je bent een middag of avond uit! Wijnspijstijd! 🍷🍽️🕰️ @eviekookt en ik hebben weer een heerlijke wijnspijs combinatie voor je hoor! 🤤 Deze keer draait het om ‘vet en veul’ en dat zien we terug in zowel het gerecht als in de wijn! Evie maakte namelijk op z’n Amerikaans 🇺🇸 een Mac and Cheese 🧀 met rivierkreeftjes 🦞. En om het lekker Amerikaans te houden, schonk ik daar natuurlijk een fijne Californische klapper van een Chardonnay bij 😍. Deze Chardonnay van Adulation macht daar perfect bij. 👌 Vet, vol, en veul houtrijping. Zo veel dat je er bijna een zaag bij nodig hebt. 🪚 Wanneer je naar de kleur van deze wijn kijkt zie je al een eerste hint, de mooie goudgele kleur 🧡💛 duidt al op een wijn die houtrijping heeft gehad. Daarnaast stuiven de geuren uit je glas! 🌪️ In zowel de geur als de smaak vind je aroma’s van vanille, toast, boter en honing 🌼🍞🧈🍯, met een vleugje cedar en rijp tropisch fruit als Perzik en Ananas 🍑🍍 . Doordat zowel het gerecht als de wijn volle romige smaken en een mooi rond mondgevoel geven, complimenteren ze elkaar. De een overheerst de ander niet en ze zijn beide een feestje in de mond. 🥰🥳 Jij ook fan van vet en veul? And it’s a testament to that old adage, because good things really do come when you wait that long. 🕰️ It’s rich, luxurious and elegant from all angles. From the golden colour and gentle bubbles in the glass, to the baked peach and roasted hazelnut on the nose, and the honeyed, buttery, croissant notes on the palate. It’s dreamy. The best way we can describe harvest 2024 is fast and furious, some might even say it was gone in 60 seconds. The fruit was very healthy and tasted like apples, quinces and pears. The growing season started off cool and the vines didn’t look massively stressed during the January heatwaves, likely owing to the good groundwater reserves built up with our proper winter rains of the past couple of seasons. Leading up to harvest there were also floods, fires, heatwaves and hazy days. So it was wild, a bit early and in the end fast and furious. Cannot wait to see how these Sem babies look after winter. Легко ложиться на регулярные сравнения с Бургундией (с современным её белым стилем) и в слепую без проблем выстегнет многих. И Ех Vero 2 от Эвальда Чеппе с приставкой S, как указатель на остаточный сахар в этом винтаже (или даже отдельные бочки 2017 года, тк по-моему был и сухой вариант в 2017м). С срединных по расположению на холме виноградников. Более широкое по текстуре, объёмное, на спелых тропических фруктах, с абсолютным балансом высокой кислотности и остаточного сахара. Domaine Rossignol-Trapet. Based in Gevrey-Chambertin, the estate’s roots date back to 1961, though its modern-day story begins with brothers Nicolas and David Rossignol, who are fervent believers in organic and biodynamic farming. The domaine’s 13 hectares of vines span a variety of appellations across the Côte de Nuits and Côte de Beaune, including some of the most prestigious grand cru and premier cru sites in Gevrey-Chambertin. Have to say I'm loving the weather here in Paris. I'm no longer being baked from the inside and drinking red wines is actually possible. Fiona Leroy started her domaine in 2017 and implemented organic farming right from the beginning. The wines see no intervention only a tiny dose of SO2 at bottling. The 2022 Les Foutières is no doubt young and it needed about an hour to breathe and open up. I was skeptical about the first glass but the second half of the bottle was extremely enjoyable. Aromas of undergrowth, floral and red fruits. Initially quite firmed but still fresh and as it mellow with air the engaging acidity and lean minerality uplifts the wine. Thursday, 9th of May, 5:30pm - 8:30pm Xavier Amirault of the Domaine Amirault will be at Cardwell Cellars pouring a lineup of wines from his estate. This will be a veritable masterclass on the wines of Bourgueil, biodynamic viticulture, and Cabernet Franc. Xavier and Agnes Amirault are the latest generation to nurture the Clos des Quarterons Estate, family-run for 180 years. Cabernet Franc is the dominant variety; the emphasis is on elegance and finesse. In addition, the family have a little over a hectare of Chenin Blanc, planted on gravel and siliceous soils. Clos des Quarterons lies on a road running parallel to the Loire in Saint-Nicolas-de-Bourgueil which used to be known as “Suisse-Océan”, underlining its position on a major east-west trading route. Their 36 hectares of vineyards are spread over 53 different plots in the heart of the Loire Valley on what was a river bed and even further back, a sea bed. As you will hear from any passionate vigneron, Xavier talks first and foremost about their land and soils, and their role in nurturing them for future generations of winemakers. They have vineyards on twelve distinct layers of subsoils, with veins of sand, gravel, limestone, clay and flint.
