Happy Hump Day! Bringing you all some DVDs & a Bluray I rented from the local library near my apartment. I got Carrie, Golden Years, Child's Play (88), Invasion of the Body Snatchers (Blu) & The Captain America two part TV film set! I have seen all of these before except Stephen King's Golden Years. "Feliz Día Internacional del Libro" "Feliz Sant Jordi" La publicación de hoy es el libro y su versión cinematográfica: "CUJO" Año 1983 En Castle Rock, una pequeña localidad de Maine, en Estados Unidos, un mecánico, Joe Camber, tiene un afable perro San Bernardo llamado Cujo. Un día, el animal corre tras un conejo al que persigue hasta una cueva, donde un murciélago le muerde y le contagia la rabia. Poco después, el perro ataca al vecino de Joe, Gary, y lo mata. Cuando el mecánico va a visitar a su amigo, lo descubre muerto. Cujo, que sigue allí, acaba con su dueño. En Castle Rock también viven los Trenton, que atraviesan una crisis familiar después de que Vic haya descubierto que su mujer, Donna, le ha sido infiel. En este desagradable contexto, Vic debe marcharse en viaje de trabajo a Boston y Nueva York. Junto a su pequeño hijo, Tad, Donna lleva su coche a reparar al taller de Camber. Mientras la mujer busca al mecánico, Cujo aparece dispuesto a atacar. Peliculote muy disfrutón, que te hará pasar un rato entretenido. En principio me negué a verla, puesto que la confundía con "EL MEJOR AMIGO DEL HOMBRE" ,cuyo perro asesino es clavado a mi perro Byron, y no quería ver a mi oso con otros ojos. La peli nos sitúa en San Francisco. Corelli (David Caruso), el ayudante del fiscal, está involucrado en investigar un caso insólito. Un multimillonario ha sido asesinado de una manera brutal en su propia casa. Corelli deberá resolver el caso lo más rápido posible: el asesino anda suelto por la ciudad y es muy probable que vuelva a cometer algún crimen. Entre medias, trio amoroso entre nuestros protas, alguna que otra escena picantona y poca cosa más. Peli que te hará pasar el rato, sin hacerte pensar mucho y que seguramente pase sin pena ni gloria por tu memoria filmográfica. Se que hay quien ama sus trabajos y quienes lo consideran uno de los grandes de la historia del cine, pero a mi no me suele agradar su trabajo, como norma general. Ridley Scott's 1989 Police procedural which has aged surprisingly well. Produced in a time where Japan was viewed with suspicion because of its economic dominance in the 80s. It's an interesting time capsule piece as to how attitudes change over the years. Shot by Jan De Bont who would later direct Speed, this looks divine. Watched in 4K, the image looks sumptuous and follows the lead of Scott's earlier classic Blade Runner. Beautiful neo-noir chiaroscuro blended with Mise en scene which borrows heavily from Kinji Fukasaku make this a delight for geeks like me. Particularly from an image that was shot in 2.20:1 rather than the 16.9 we get these days. Michael Douglas is at the height of his powers here. It's easy to forget how good an actor he was. Charismatic, edgy and at times well nuanced, I think this is his best performance. Joined by a young Andy Garcia, their chemistry works really well. The Japanese cast are just as good. The late great, Ken Takakura plays Douglas's counterpart. Here cast against type(Most of his other roles are criminals/Yakuza parts) he plays the reluctant partner of an objectionable American very well. From an antagonist point of view we have one of Japan's finest. Yusaku Matsuda, in his final film role he sets the screen alight. Like Takakura, he is completely cast against type. Usually playing a cop, this performance is a career highlight. Matsuda was diagnosed with aggressive bowel cancer just after being cast. Saying that this role would allow him to live forever, the temptation of a large US paycheck for a jobbing Japanese actor proved too hard to resist, particularly for a young father raising a family. Once filming was complete he sought treatment, sadly it was too late and the cancer had spread. He passed away not long after the premiere, he was only 40. He casts a long shadow over Japanese and world cinema. This is a fitting epitaph. I really enjoyed watching this film again. To date Wong's last 100% Hong Kong production. A spiritual sequel to Chungking Express, I think this is one of his best films. Originally conceived as the third story in the Chungking Express narrative, Wong retooled it and made a feature out of it. A neo noir with shades of comedy, I think the emotional balance of the script works just as well as Chungking Express. Shot mostly with an ultra wide 6.3mm lens, the image is really allowed to breathe. Christopher Doyle really paints with light here, street lamps, neon signs and headlights are all used to illuminate the image. Again we have excellent acting. Leon Lai, Takeshi Kaneshiro, Michelle Reis and Charlie Yeung round out a cast that you just don't get these days. I watched all of Wong's films in the 90s and enjoyed them. Revisiting them now I realise just how talented a filmmaker he is. His works rewards continual viewings. You see the nuances and the in-jokes the more you watch. What I also found was his themes of loss, redemption and security flow through all of his films. The last film he released was 2013's Grandmaster. I really hope he goes back behind the camera and back to Hong Kong again. Straight to video 1994 Sci-Fi thriller which looks like it was shot on a building site near the Director's house. From the colour grading on this it looks like it was shot on Hi 8 or worse still SVHS. The script is interesting and has some decent world building but the acting is extremely poor. Blown up to 4K through my Blu Ray player, it's fair to say that this film hasn't really stood the test of time. That said it was thoroughly entertaining. At a brisk 99 minute running time, it's actually not too bad. Nowhere near as bad as I thought it was, I picked this up for £1.38 on eBay in a fit of nostalgia. I miss the old days of trailing video shop shelves looking for something to rent on a Friday or Saturday night. I remember getting this from Global video back in the day. This was done far better by Charles Band in his movie Trancers.
