Review Hangover Part II 2011 Blu-ray Rating: 3/5 Hangover Part II is a retread of the first film with a wildly uneven tone and harsher humour. My appreciation for this film has grown since my first viewing and while it’s funny, it’s nowhere near the heights of its predecessor. Todd Phillips dials into the setting of Bangkok and there’s certainly growth in his style between this and his previous film Due Date. The film falls into the similar sequel troupes of bigger and increasing support characters roles. The comedy feels more forced this time around and instead of unpredictability of the original, there’s a choice to linger on longer arcs. The film was a bigger hit at the box office and the momentum from the original’s success carried this to a wider audience. The progression of Stu’s character is lacking and it feels like he lost all the edginess from those closing scenes of original. This is still an enjoyable entry into the series and I liked that Phillips attempted a change of pace, even though the screenplay lacked originality. The craziness of the first is still here and the cast still share the same chemistry that works so well. The mean spirited comedy wasn’t as harsh in the original and there’s a leap made by Phillips that doesn’t work. The subplot involving Paul Giamatti‘s character pushes the film towards a similar conclusion of the first and this is another weak aspect of this story. Review Damage 2009 DVD Rating: 2.5/5 Damage can’t overcome its simplicity, but as a starring vehicle for Steve Austin it’s surprisingly heartfelt considering the storyline. The film was a VOD title and I give it additional points for casting one of my favourite character actors Walton Goggins as a slimy underground fight agent. Austin provides a strong presence here and had his career been in the 80s he would’ve immediately been the new tough guy. Filmmaker Jeff F. King has been primarily involved in tv but his previous films are both Steven Seagal VOD releases. King doesn’t have the budgets with these films as the money is consumed by its central star and stunts, but it’s a step in the right direction for his career as a director. The screenplay is the central fault here and it can’t balance the softer story elements to create any true compassion for its characters. Laura Vandervoort and Goggins both assist the film with their supporting performances, and this triangle of characters allow this to be watchable between the fight sequences. It’s a flawed film without a central antagonist to really make this memorable, but as a VOD with limited exposure, it’s a bit of fun. Dragged down by some clunky dialogue and story structure, this film somehow shakes these flaws away for some gritty action beats. Review The Hangover 2009 Blu-ray Rating: 4.5/5 The Hangover balances a perfect ensemble with a frenetic pace and well structured screenplay to deliver non stop laughs. Filmmaker Todd Phillips had started his directing career with these raunchy ensemble comedies but his last two films had attempted to distance himself away from them. This was the right move for Phillips and it would immediately turn into a cultural and commercial phenomenon. In a way it breathed life back into a well worn genre and demonstrated with the right cast and director these raunchy genre films could land heavily at the box office. Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms and Zach Galifianakis are just sensational as the lead characters, and the chemistry between them is undeniable. It’s still Phillips’s direction that ensures the pacing and story falls into place, but it helps to have a cast that connects with the material. The unpredictability of the jokes and sequences keeps you on your toes, and I feel my appreciation for this film has never faltered. It’s a relentlessly funny ride that culminates into one of the best finales. You’ve already forgiven the film for its lack of answers and everything is shown to you in one hilarious montage. Some new additions to the movie room today, these were sent to me off of my Amazon wishlist. The link to my wish list is in my bio. . The last samurai may be my favorite Tom Cruise movie of all time and I’m extremely excited to have it in the movie room. This one has an amazing story with beautiful visuals along with phenomenal cast. . I have not got a chance to watch any of the Chucky series so I am excited to check that out. I’ve heard nothing but good things about it so hopefully we can watch that soon and get caught up before the third season. . Malum Is a horror movie that I’ve never seen before and excited that it came came with a slipcover. This one looks really interesting and I’m excited to dig into it and see what it’s all about. . A BOY AND HIS DOG (1975) A fantastic film and a wonderful surprise. Great sense of irrevreant humor that juxtaposes an entirely dower world. Loved the cast and locations. For a film from the 70s the action was really sharply edited and engaging.
