Last weekend, Access students, along with several local community members, participated in a community service event at Presidio Park. There, under the direction of Park Ranger Connors, our students were able to fill a 40-yard dumpster with approximately 2,500 pounds of green waste in record time! In addition to the green waste, students were able to collect 70 pounds of trash and recyclables. The volunteers also helped clear 25 yards of stormwater channel which becomes increasingly congested with each winter storm. 50 students students competed throughout the weekend in the SoCal league finals! The team consisting of Nathan C, Haymi, Mendias, Thu, and Christian J were too strong for the rest of the field in their victory against team Laguna Blanca of Santa Barbara in the finals. The individual tournament that followed featured multiple five game battles between members of the other two teams as Nathan C came away with second place in a intense final against the eventual champion, Marshall. Hermela captured 3rd place in the first division. In the second division Ivanna captured her first place title defeating fellow Access student Hanna with some great squash! She also triumphed in a resilient effort coming back from two sets down. Eldana earned her 3rd place finish with a dramatic comeback to win in five games! The students continue to show growth and improvement as they earn their confidence, meet some new people, and make some memories. Before the food and festivities, a small but powerful group of approximately 35 student-athletes arrived to compete at this year's Access Silver tournament with some great squash played across the board! Yared F finished 2nd in the BU17 division with some precise and disciplined squash throughout the weekend! Liya finished 3rd after an exhilarating five game battle. In the GU19 division Hermela rose to the top of this division with consistent play and determination that would not be denied. She triumphed in the final against her training compadre Haymi. Eden finished 3rd in the division. With January's SEA team nationals near, students are looking to sharpen their skills to secure their spot on the five person team that is vying for a national championship to bring back to the West Coast. This Weekend, approximately 40 Access Club members and After-School students came together to compete in our first Access Club Friendly of the year. We enjoyed some competitive matches and witnessed some amazing connections through this amazing sport that will transcend the day! Some of our new cohort of students including Danite, Feven, Reham, Soliyana, Abigail Over 10 students competed in their first competitive matches earning their confidence for future tournaments and opportunities to come!
