Recently participated in a training workshop organized for Military personnel from around the country. This was made possible by the Project Monitoring committee from the Office of the Chief of Army Staff of Nigeria. Participants cut across the Army, Airforce and the Navy totaling 90 in all and some civilians who were also in attendance. My talk centered on the basics of Industrial and Organizational Psychology which is the study of work behavior. This of course entails alot so I looked at topics ranging from the Emotional and Psychological well being of workers to others bothering around the work in itself. My industrial experience in various work environments also enabled me to present papers on Quality Assurance and Quality Control as well as Ensuring Safety in work environments. At the end of it all they said I had opened their minds to the other part of work which is in the overall well being and which though often invisible, affects the output of workers. Managers and business owners need to move with the times and know that work is beyond just output. Although many do not see the need for Psychologists in their workplaces, the times are changing and daily we see the effects of depression, anxiety and the inability to control emotions at work wrecking the world of work. These are 4 of the major mental health disorders which are commonly diagnosed. 1. A large-scale population-based study led by researchers from the University of Oxford in 2019, investigated the link between nine major mental disorders and intimate partner violence perpetrated by men towards women. Most of the studied mental disorders (except for autism), which include schizophrenia-spectrum disorders, bipolar disorder, depression, alcohol and drug use disorders, ADHD and personality disorders are associated with an increased risk of domestic violence perpetration by men towards women. The increased risk was between two and seven times compared with the general population and from two to four-fold compared with the unaffected siblings of men with a mental disorder. The highest absolute rates and relative risks for domestic violence perpetration (around 1 in 5) were found in men with substance use disorders. I spend a lot of time teaching people to understand the concept I call 'Radical Wellness.' As a trauma-survivor, this approach has been/is personally helpful because not only does it build important pro-active skills I wish I'd learned much earlier in my own journey, it's also an empowering approach that re-centers our inner wisdom and honors our experiences. But there's more to it - and I often pass over this important element too quickly when talking about RW: that is, acknowledging that we need Radical Wellness BECAUSE so many things are not okay. We are not well equipped to discuss what isn't okay. We don't like to talk about the personal: grief, struggle, loss, depression, etc. We don't like to talk about systemic limitations: finances, structures, medical care, or laws. We don't like to talk about long-standing harmful practices: in workplaces, organizations, or our own communities. We like the hero story. And I'm glad we do. BUT There are things that are not okay and we HAVE to say that part out loud too. Otherwise, we still leave ourselves and those around us thinking that they need to 'get okay' often while harboring a silent lack of self-compassion that is based on the idea that okay means acceptance of some awful things. It doesn't. To be okay with ourselves doesn't mean accepting a reduction of our humanity - it DOESN'T MEAN we accept the conditions. I just want to tell you that we - I - have to also make the time to say that I created Radical Wellness, and I'm passionate about the teaching because of the awful reality that too often, the things around us, the things happening to us or to those we love, are just NOT okay. Not much is known about this mental illness and the possible acute and tragic outcomes when left untreated or mis diagnosed. The onset of postpartum depression can be an important indicator. My first dog as an adult, adopting her 5 & a half years ago. I was going through the most difficult time in my life. I was poorly. I was isolated. And, I was hardly able to function after my mum's passing triggered an episode. I adopted this girl straight after my mum's passing, & two months later, it hit me. Cut a long story short; It took me 9 months to recover. And, if it wasn't for the presence of this girl, things could have been a lot worse. She's a Romanian rescue. 🗣️ Talking to a friend can be very beneficial for your mental health, but it’s not quite the same as therapy. 🗣️ A therapist can provide a safe, confidential space to explore your problems in depth and develop effective tools for managing them. 👉🏻 Here are a few similariteis between talking to a friend and a therapist. Both friends and therapists can offer a safe space to vent, share your worries, and feel heard. They can also validate your feelings and offer empathy for what you’re going through. 👉🏻 But, here are also the important differences: A therapist has extensive training in dealing with complex mental health issues whereas a friend may not have that. In therapy, you get to focus a lot more on you, helping you develop the correct coping mechanisms and identifying behavioural patterns. Whereas, in friendships, both the parties are vulnerable and emotional with each other from time to time. Think of it this way: a friend is like a cheerleader, while a therapist is like a coach. Both can be valuable in your life, but they serve different purposes.
