“Space plus bullshit equals death.” What’s better than a good space opera novel? A queer space opera novel. “Architects of Memory” was exactly that. It’s gripping and fast paced, it’s about corporate greed and an alien threat. It’s a story about found family and friendship. Ash is a terminally ill salvage pilot on a small vessel currently taking apart the wreck of a large space cruiser. On one of her missions she comes across an alien weapon that trigger total annihilation. She takes it with her, unwittingly becoming part of a conspiracy of corporate intrigue. Ash and her crew become pawns in the hands of all powerful CEOs. What took my breath away (again) was the world building in this book: space is ruled by corporations in which one is either a citizen with all the rights or an uncitizen with none at all. One can work as an indenture to become a citizen but actually achieving this goal is near impossible. It’s an utterly nightmarish idea that doesn’t seem to be too far fetched. I loved the queer cast and the non-binary aspects of the novel. The ruling class of the birthrights all wear high heels and skirts and also wear their hair long and in elaborate styles, for example. I also loved the aliens in this story… Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 QOTD: I can’t think of a question so ask me something. That is your role, your gift.” When I read “The Night Circus” in 2019, right after I started my bookstagram account I fell head over heels in love with it. This year, Jess @bookshelfadventurer asked whether anyone was interested in buddy reading it with her and I immediately signed up for it. I have to admit that I feared that it lost its magic but I shouldn’t have worried. It became even more magical. And while I’m a quick reader I took my time with it and savored every detail. The Cirque des Rêves is a magical traveling circus. It arrives without warning and leaves just as quickly. It’s full of impossible things and wonders. Impossible things that are the result of a competition between two magicians. The Circus is the stage on which they demonstrate their skills. Celia has been trained by her strict and overbearing father, Marco by the aloof and absent A.H. They were set up as competitors by their guardians and now fight without knowing why and to what end. But on first meeting they fall deeply and desperately in love which might jeopardize not only their competition but the entire circus. This book is just beautiful. Not only is the prose stunning and wonderfully lyrical. Reading it feels almost like dreaming. The mental images it evokes are vivid and falling into the story is unavoidable. The characters have depth and feel wonderfully realistic: full of fears and doubts, of love and friendship. There are not only Celia and Marco, there are also Poppet and Bailey whose relationship is just as beautiful. I’m so glad I reread it and I’m going to pick up “The Starless Sea” soon as well because my memories of it are just as wonderful. Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ QOTD: Do you like books about circuses? I finished Pack Dutton by @ideally_hannah last week and I thoroughly enjoyed it! My only issue - waiting for book 2 because one book wasn’t enough! This was my first ever dark omegaverse and as worried as I was about the content, and it was very dark, I was surprisingly ok with the triggers. @ideally_hannah writing was just so compelling and I couldn’t put Pack Dutton down!

The chemistry between the two, the buildup, and the way in which their romance progressed was beautiful. The ending tore me up and I cannot wait until book 2! Reading: I’m going to read “Engines of Oblivion” next after my reread of “Architects of Memory” which I loved just as much as the first time. Bookish Take: Pretty End Pages > Sprayed Edges I was not planning on buying The Familiar because I have both the ARC and the audiobook, but those pomegranate end pages absolutely got me. I love special editions as much as the rest of you, but sometimes all a book needs is just some pretty end papers–especially since those fancy sprayed edge editions drive prices up and are an overall headache for us booksellers. I still love them, but they’ve sent me into a bookstore-wide panic on release date multiple times.

Hello Bookstagram! I am officially back from my hiatus!🥳 I will post a writing update soon, but first, here’s some of what I’ve been reading. I actually did not read much fantasy compared to what I usually do, but this is often the case when I’m doing developmental edits. In my non-fantasy reading, I read five Liane Moriarty books (she’s now a favorite author), The Other Boleyn Girl (I enjoyed but not as much as previous her Plantagenet books, mostly because of her portrayal of Anne), A Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes which I loved, and six Bridgerton books…🙈 They were better than I expected but still absolutely silly. I love how they all have crazy fast marriages cuz they can’t keep it in their pants😂 very fun, and though I’m tempted I’ll likely pass on the show. Now onto the fantasy I read. The Folk of the Air: ⭐️⭐️⭐️.5 I blew through this series in like a week! It was a lot of fun, and I loved the romance and the Fae world. The secondary characters though were kinda meh, and the plot in the third book was a bit weak compared to the first two. I may reread for the romance and vibes, but I wish I’d not bought them all. Iron Flame: ⭐️⭐️⭐️ This was addictive and fun, though not as strong as the first book in my opinion. It went all over the place, and I think it really needed more editing than it got. I still don’t know how we’re going to get five books out of this series without them getting ridiculous and repetitive… there were times even this book felt repetitive. But it was fun to read with friends, and we are still talking about it and making predictions. The Shadow of What Was Lost: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I loved this one! I was hesitant to pick it up with how big it is, but it’s one of my grandma’s favorites so I did. It had a very classic fantasy vibe but also an early Sanderson one. Nothing about it felt super unique but it was done well, and I was quite surprised a few times which is always fun. I’m invested in these characters and immediately bought the next book. {is reading} ☠︎︎ Le Pont des Tempêtes ☠︎︎ ⋆ Je me suis fait avoir par les reviews bookstas et les moodboards du livre, j'avoue. Donc quand j'ai compris que c'était 80% de politique et de guerres de territoires pour le Pont, j'ai vraiment hésité à le DNF. Maaaaiiis j'étais un peu curieuxe de l'évolution de la romance (et de AREN miam), et en plus j'aimais beaucoup l'univers et l'ambiance de la mer, des tempêtes etc. ⋆ Au 2/3 du livre, je ne pouvais plus le lâcher. Les 100 dernières pages, elles m'ont pris par le colbac, m'ont ramené dedans et c'est passé d'un 2 ☆ à un 4 ☆. ⋆ La romance devient touchante, les personnages attachants, les causes et conséquences beaucoup plus importantes, et maintenant j'ai qu'une hâte c'est lire le tome 2 en fait. Les plots twists et les dernières pages font parties des meilleur.e.s que j'ai pu lire depuis longtemps. Je suis teeeellement content !
