The Music Video to “Malibu” by Hole Written by Courtney Love, Billy Corgan, and Eric Erlandson, “Malibu” was inspired by Courtney’s experiences while living in the city along with a fantasy she had while being married to Kurt Cobain. In an interview with Blender magazine in 2006, this is what she had to say about the song: “It’s an empathy song. I wanted the boy in the song to drive away from Hollywood and the drugs. When I was pregnant, Kurt and I always had this thing about getting out of the basement apartment we lived in with dealers next door and going to live in Malibu. It’s a very healing place.” Around the time the band began recording the song, Courtney Love had become a successful actress and had moved to Beverly Hills, where she integrated into the celebrity culture she once railed against. In comparison, the music had become more melodic and accessible when compared to Hole tracks like “Miss World” and “Softer, Softest.” Billy Corgan from the Smashing Pumpkins helped bring the song to life. When Hole hit a creative block while working on the Celebrity Skin album, she called on Corgan, who song-doctored some tracks to get them to the finish line. While the album was written and recorded 6 months before Kurt passed away, Live Through This eerily touches on themes of death, violence and the pressures of fame. The album title was a nod to the warfare Courtney and her family had experienced in 1992 through to 1994. — “If you live through this with me I swear that I will die for you” Courtney sings on Asking For It. The title of LTT is lifted from a scene in Gone With The Wind with Scarlett O’Hara professing: “As God is my witness, as God is my witness they’re not going to lick me. I’m going to live through this and when it’s all over, I’ll never be hungry again.” — In September 1994, 4 months after the release, when asked about the awful things surrounding Courtney (Kurt’s death and Hole’s bassist Kristen Pfaff died of an overdose two months after Kurt) Courtney responded simply: “I’m not psychic, but my lyrics are” — “I had a plan for the fourth record, and the fifth record, and the sixth record. I had a really grand design that got messed with because of my own problems. Ésa es una de las razones por las que Live Through This suena tan sorprendentemente diferente de Pretty on the Inside, pero la verdadera razón es el deseo de Love de competir en el mismo ámbito comercial del rock alternativo que su marido, Kurt Cobain. De hecho, muchos rumores han afirmado que Cobain escribió una parte sustancial del álbum. C'ERA UNA VOLTA IL 1994 Il 12 aprile di trent'anni fa usciva "Live through this", secondo album delle Hole di Courtney Love. Il disco veniva pubblicato appena sette giorni dopo la morte di suo marito Kurt Cobain, suicida il 5 aprile e ritrovato l'8 aprile. Le polemiche che accompagnarono l'uscita del disco e la figura di Love in relazione a Cobain hanno spesso oscurato il valore musicale di una piccola gemma del grunge al femminile. Another album that is 30 years old today. Released only a few days after Kurt Cobain's suicide, this album was always subject of conspiracy theories. People claiming it was "ghostwritten" by Cobain, and of course all the Courtney killed Kurt gossip. It's sad to see how people, some media, and corporate assholes spent years labeling her a black widow. Fortunately, she survived. Female artists always had to prove themselves to the world.
