Colder weather is here! For many, paddling season is over, for others who are crazy, that still means we're on the water. Experienced and new cold-weather paddlers alike can always take a few tips home with them. 🌡Always follow the 120-degree rule: if the air temp + water temp is less than 120 degrees, you are at higher risk of cold shock and/or hypothermia. Pack and dress accordingly for your paddle trip. 🦺Dress in layers using clothing made of synthetic fabrics such as polypropylene, nylon, neoprene, and polyester fleece. The Extras on this rack include wicking balaclavas and neck gaiters. We also carry NRS dry suits as our primary shelter layer for winter paddling. For shoulder seasons - wind/rain jackets - the Rothco Level III fleece on the left is a good insulation layer. When it comes to cold water safety be W.I.S.E. Wearables - be W.I.S.E You’ve heard that there is no such thing as bad weather, just inappropriate clothing. Here’s some “appropriate” clothing for adverse weather and water. The Appalachian Mountain Club recommends an easy mnemonic for preparing for adverse weather and water - Be W.I.S.E. Briefly: W is for Wicking - the innermost layer that moves moisture away from your skin I is for Insulation - the middle layer(s) that provide warmth - can be multiple layers to allow for adjusting to conditions and levels of exertion. Should be material that stays warm when wet. S is for Shelter - the outermost layer that protects the insulation from the weather - rain, snow, etc. Rain jackets, dry suits, windproof shell. Similar to Insulation, how much and how little depends on conditions and activity. E is for Extra - carry spare stuff in case. We think it also includes hands, feet and head - which need equal protection and care. Just another day at the office, when working with students I always emphasize to practice practice practice, it builds confidence and technic, it’s also important to practice in the conditions your paddling in. Basically anyone can do this in 25c water and 30c air temperature, it’s a different experience in a snowstorm and 4c water temperature. In addition what you wear will safe your life so remember “dress for the water temperature not the air temperature”. All to often I see people out paddling in jeans, hiking boots and heavy coats strapped into a life jacket and saying “oh I won’t capsize I know what I’m doing”, really!!! You couldn’t swim to the other end of a pool little own a shoreline in 4c lake conditions dressed like that. And if your lucky and make it to shore “now what”? It’s a beautiful time to be out provided you are properly prepared and not over confident in your paddling abilities. Get the training and widen your horizons. Whoa! After a week of no exercise (we’re being totally upfront and honest with ya’ll 😅🙈 ), we were greeted with high wind gusts - 24 to 28 kts. We made it out so there was no way we were going to turn back. With winter paddling, one of the most important things I do, is eat well before going into the cold. Same as you would do on a long car journey, start with a full tank and top it up whenever possible. Cold temperatures generate more brown fat which is good for burning calories, it is the white fat that builds up and causes obesity. Hydration is also important even though desire to drink is decreased in cold weather. After kicking myself for not having a witches hat on hand for a Halloween costume paddle, I got out my only orange shirt and black neoprene pants and headed out on the water for about an hour. It’s been about 3 weeks since I was last out here and the conditions have definitely changed. I got a tad complacent with my gear because the @boatingindc boathouse is still open on their 120 rule (where both water and air temp have to be above 120 for safe paddling) and I only brought one pair of neoprene booties which of course got soaked so I opted to go without. The water wasn’t the worst part— it was the wind. Turning back to head back downriver to TR Island where I launched, I definitely was full of regret for not bringing my warm foot gear. While I was dressed warm enough everywhere else, my toes nearly froze and I had to get off the water early. It’s definitely time to follow my own rules about safe cold weather paddling: two extra pairs of dry socks on hand, dry extra neoprene booties, and time to bust out the boots and water socks to wear when I launch. So many of us have been paddling in the winter.... it’s so peaceful... calm and zenfully awesome.... few things makes it awesome... . 1. There is zero boat traffic. 2. The bay is not choppy. 3. There is no noise. 4. The air is crisp. 5. You are getting a workout. 6. And your chit chatting with your friends about stuff🤷🏻♀️🤣🙏🏼😃... guy stuff, girl stuff just stuff....it’s so fun ... Many people think your going to fall in... well if you don’t fall off your BOARD in the summer, chances are your not going to FALL OFF in the winter.. and if you do then you’ll have the correct gear on... and guess what???
