Dr Ross Greene would definitely be on my dream dinner party guest list so it was an (caught-me-by-surprise) emotional teary moment meeting him today! I have a theory that there are moments in life (some momentous and some entirely unnoticed) that 'pinball' you in a different direction than you were headed. One of mine was painting a bedroom, while listening to 'Lost at School'. The revelation hit me like a ton of bricks that I was part of the problem. With practices like reward charts, token boards and 'waiting out' kids behaviour, I was doing harm. That moment changed my parenting. That moment changed my practice. That moment has led to family decisions and career decisions and ricocheted me in a neuroaffirming direction ever since, full of connection and 'human moments' to quote Dr Greene himself. On reflection, the tears today weren't surprising at all. Thankyou for the waves of change you are creating in the world @livesinthebalance ! #drrossgreene #collaborativeandproactivesolutions #collaborativeansproactivesolutionstraining #livesinthebalance #cps #endbehaviourism #regulation #autism #adhd #kidsdowelliftheycan

Behaviourally challenging kids are not always challenging. They’re challenging when the expectations placed on them outstrip their skills. Children with challenging behaviour do not lack the motivation to do well, nor are they attention-seeking, manipulative, coercive or limit-testing. What challenging kids lack are the skills not to be challenging. If we view challenging behaviour as a result of lagging skills and not lagging motivation or manipulative behaviour, we can see why rewarding and punishing a child with challenging behaviour may not make things better or help them to learn the essential skills for lasting success. “Children do well if they can. If they can’t, we adults needs to figure out what’s getting in the way (with the help of the child) so we can help.” - Dr Ross Greene. ✅

”Lapset toimisivat oikein, jos osaisivat” Julkaisimme pari vuotta sitten postauksen, jossa kerroimme, että HUS lastenpsykiatrialla on käytössä Collaborative & Proactive Solutions (CPS) yhteistoiminnallinen ongelmanratkaisumalli. Julkaisemme postauksesta nyt uudistetun ja täydennetyn version. Dropbox-kansiostamme (🔗biossa) voit ladata uudistetun materiaalin käyttöösi. Suosittelemme lämpimästi tutustumaan malliin syvemmin kirjallisuuden kautta. Lisää aiheesta myös storyjen linkeistä! “Children Do Well When They Can” - Dr. Ross Greene ⭐️ A helpful reminder that children do not make a choice to be challenging! They are often missing the skills to adapt to/meet the expectation in place by the adults. So what do we do? Work collaboratively with the child to problem solve together - which yields much more positive results long term. 📚 I’ve had such a pleasure learning from Dr. Greene today and look forward to another full day of understanding how to implement his approach tomorrow! #playtherapy #playtherapist #cpsmodel #drrossgreene #playtherapist #collaborativeandproactivesolutions #explosivechild #collaborativelearning

🦷 🪥😁Ahh the age old parenting question (and not just to the littles…): “Did you brush ?” So much angst here that we frequently use “teeth brushing” as an example when we’re helping parents find ways to help their kids meet whatever expectation is challenging for them. There’s no one magic recommendation, as the root of the problem can be so different for each child. Generally speaking, modeling, routine, and visual cues always help when teaching any activity of daily living. However, when we help parents understand how to involve their child in the problem solving process, that is when all the magic happens!!! #brushyourteeth #collaborativeandproactivesolutions #problemsolving #individualizedcoaching #brainbodyconnection #parenting #occupationaltherapists #parentcoaching #KidsDoWellIfTheyCan

There is a lot of focus on parental boundaries and limits… but frequently left out of the conversation is that this often (not always) involves exerting power and control over children. What if we presume competence, assume good intent, and trust that kids are motivated to do well? When we honor autonomy, we shift towards supportive relationships, we come to mutual understandings and agreements, and establish trust in each other (which guess what, is much more powerful than the illusion of control…) It’s not permissive, it is deeply involved and incredibly hard work. But it’s so worth it. #pathologicaldemandavoidance #pda #persistentdriveforautonomy #persistentdriveforautonomy #spiritedchild #highlysensitivechild #autismawareness #gentleparenting #respectfulparenting #responsiveparenting #collaborativeandproactivesolutions #consciousparenting #coregulation #selfreg #brainbodyparenting #oppositionaldefiantdisorder #neurodiversitymovement #neurodiversity #neurodiversityaffirming #polyvagaltheory #nervoussystem

Sunday sesh! 🤓 I’m catching up on my “Collaborative & Proactive Solutions” webinar today. It was held last week by @livesinthebalance in a US time zone so there was no way I was dialling in at midnight to watch it live!!! My fabulous speechie colleagues recommended this training to help me develop strategies and ideas for understanding and working effectively with clients who demonstrate challenging behaviours as a result of difficulties meeting expectations. I’m not even two hours in and my eyes have popped and mouth dropped numerous times from some amazing truth bombs and realisations. I highly recommend this course for any speechies, teachers or parents!!! It’s not just for people/parents working with children who have special needs - it can help us do better with supporting ALL children. #collaborativeandproactivesolutions #speechpathology #challengingbehaviour #parenting #behaviourmanagement #education

Ways to uncover your child’s stresses: star some of the physical attributes you notice before an outburst such as: I noticed that when we asked you to clean your room, you made your hands into fists and scrunched up your face.” Then simply ask What’s Up? After this question, remain silent. Give them the time to process your question. Don’t float ideas. They will say what you want to hear. Silence will push them to think. This will get them to name their barriers about cleaning their rooms. After each one, ask “Is there anything else?” There, now you have your first tool to understand what barriers they experience at this request. Paul and Rachel had a fantastic time at Dr Ross Greene's Collborative and Proactive Solutions course this week, learning about engaging kids in solving problems that affect their lives. "If kids could do well, they would do well. In other words, if the kid has the skills to exhibit adaptive behaviour, they wouldn't be exhibiting challenging behaviour. That's because doing well is always preferable to not doing well." #kidsdowellwhentheycan #drrossgreene #collaborativeandproactivesolutions

In the words of my new best friend; #DrRossGreene . ‘Don’t be late!’ . He tells us, that if you’re looking at a child’s behaviour and how to fix it, you’re already too late. . You need to take a step back and look at what is causing the behaviour. . Slow down. . Observe. . Ask. . Listen. . What is the problem? . What are your expectations? . Are they realistic expectations? . What are the child’s expectations? . What’s the solution? . Not YOUR solution… . What is the CHILD’S solution? . Can you both adjust your expectations to meet yours and the child’s concerns? . If so, you’re likely going to solve the problem. . And then the behaviour will likely adjust itself all on its own. . This is the CPS model and I am loving it. . #CollaborativeAndProactiveSolutions #DontBeLate #ActuallyAutistic #AutisticJoy #AutisticGlimmer #Autistic #Autism #AutisticEducator #SupportWorker #AutisticAcceptance #DisabilitySupport #AutisticResources #AutismMom (I don’t identify as an autism mom/mum but am super keen to reach that cohort and provide them with an alternative option of care for their kids.

We had 6 of the MTS team attend training with Dr Rosse Greene in Brisbane last week. WOW!! We were all a little bit excited to meet the man who is changing the world and challenging us all to think about how we work with children presenting with behaviour difficulties. He opened the workshop with a phrase that hit home "What a luxury we have to take a day to think about how we treat children". And how wonderful it was. The training was titled "Moving from Power and control to collaboration and problem solving". He walked us through 3 main themes or shifts to our thinking: 1) Children do well when they can. He helps us to reflect "any behaviour is a frustration or stress response a child has to communicate they are having difficulty meeting an expectation" . We are encouraged to focus on the problems a child is having and how we can solve them rather than on the behaviours and modifying them. 2) Problem solving to address problems should be done WITH the child. So sensible but often missed! 3) Problem solving should be proactive not reactive. We need to identify the lagging skills that mean kids may have difficulty meeting an expectation, and supporting them to find ways they can meet that expectation (or the expectation is changed to a more realistic one) We worked through how we use the "Assessment of lagging skills and unsolved problems" and many of us have started trialling using this assessment with families. This was an incredible training that really challenged our thinking and will make long lasting changes to how we support families. If you'd like to know more or would like to have a go doing this assessment and problem solving with your family please let us know! #cps #collaboration #collaborativeandproactivesolutions #drrossgreene #kidsdowellwhentheycan #speechtherapy #occupationaltherapy #speechpathology #behaviour

These past two days, I’ve been in Sydney attending Dr Ross Greene’s Collaborative & Proactive Solutions Introductory and Advanced courses. These two days have given me great hope for the future of our education systems (baby steps) and the ‘right way’ forward. Listening to kids and involving them in being active participants in solving problems that are impacting them (and others) in their home and school lives. Brilliant. Kids do well if they can. And kids feel listened to and really heard when adults take the time to give kids the space to have an opinion and share their personal concerns and ideas for moving towards finding appropriate solutions to problems. #cps #collaborativeandproactivesolutions #illumelearning #drrossgreene

What an amazing two day training event. . It was incredibly inspiring to have Dr Ross Greene, author of #TheExplosiveChild educate us in the basics of the CPS model. . It’s the kind of training event where you leave thinking ‘how ludicrous is it that we don’t all just engage with each other like this by default???’ . It was so lovely to be able to attend an event that felt so inclusive and to know the event coordinators were willing to go above and beyond to cater for my sensory needs. . It was comforting to be attending a professional development session where I didn’t feel like I was learning how to implement a ‘behaviour management technique’ that was going to be harmful to my neurokin. . It was validating to hear the presenter question why a child’s diagnosis is relevant when we are discussing concerning behaviours. ‘The diagnosis is irrelevant, I’m concerned about the problem to be solved’. . My brain, and my heart is full. . And I’d love to say I’m home and planning a rest day tomorrow but instead I’m straight into a client meeting and then a day of assignment writing for uni. . #JustKeepSwimming #ActuallyAutistic #AutisticJoy #AutisticGlimmer #Autistic #Autism #AutisticEducator #SupportWorker #AutisticAcceptance #DisabilitySupport #AutisticResources #CollaborativeAndProactiveSolutions #DrRossGreene @thekiddclinic

In true ND style, I’m laying in my hotel room bed, away from my family and creature comforts, replaying every teeny tiny interaction I had today. . There were very few and still so many. . Lots of chit chat and some deep and meaningful connections. . But I crave more connection. . I crave deep connections with every single person I meet. . The Katie in the lunch queue whose allergy list I now know. . The Cat who is an acquaintance of both my sisters. . I wanted longer, deeper conversations and connections with everyone. . But alas, an event like this is socially exhausting for me. . I found myself going out of my way to avoid eye contact with people. . I found myself telling myself ‘Don’t smile or initiate eye contact!’ . Thoughts that I just wouldn’t have (consciously) had prior to my diagnosis. . The thing is, I know what the niggle in my shoe is now. It’s a rock. And I don’t have to walk with a rock in my shoe anymore. I can’t in fact. To continue walking with a rock in my shoe when I know it’s bothering me would be ludicrous. . The rock in my shoe is my diagnosis. . Walking without the rock is me unmasking. . I can’t control it, it just has to happen. . So don’t think I’m rude, or shy or that I lack social skills. . Because I’m not and I don’t. . I love socialising. . I just can’t do it at the moment. . Because a part of unmasking after diagnosis is discovering just how burnout I am after 4 decades of unmet needs. . So today, I have to prioritise my sensory needs and social battery for what’s important; . Learning the CPS method to improve the lives of my children, myself, my partner and all of my clients. . #CollaborativeAndProactiveSolutions #DrRossGreene #ActuallyAutistic #AutisticJoy #AutisticGlimmer #Autistic #Autism #AutisticEducator #SupportWorker #AutisticAcceptance #DisabilitySupport #AutisticResources #AutismMom (I don’t identify as an autism mom/mum but am super keen to reach that cohort and provide them with an alternative option of care for their kids.

“Just ask the child”. . It’s a great strategy to takeaway from the CPS training event today. . One that a lot of us adults don’t do instinctively. . Most of us were raised in a family structure that relies on top down disciplinary systems and we aren’t aware how much power we keep a tight hold of within our roles as parents. . The biggest takeaway for me is that as a parent, I don’t need to hold power. . I don’t need to ‘be in control’ all@of the time. . I don’t need to make all the decisions on my own. . I am really looking forward to heading home and chatting with my parenting partner about how we can make sure we’re collaborating more with our kids on the day to day decisions. . #CollaborativeAndProactiveSolutions #DrRossGreene @thekiddclinic #ActuallyAutistic #AutisticJoy #AutisticGlimmer #Autistic #Autism #AutisticEducator #SupportWorker #AutisticAcceptance #DisabilitySupport #AutisticResources #AutismMom (I don’t identify as an autism mom/mum but am super keen to reach that cohort and provide them with an alternative option of care for their kids.

Tomorrow is the day! Dr Ross Greene has officially landed in Boorloo, and tomorrow and Tuesday we will come together at Optus Stadium for his Collaborative and Proactive Solutions training. Our team has been so busy behind the scene for many months, it takes a lot of teamwork to put on an event this large. Our team thanks Karl and Theresa, our directors, for giving us the opportunity to both expand our knowledge, and be a part of something so important. We hope to see many familiar faces over the next two days, look for The Kidd Clinic team in our green and white t-shirts, identifiable by The Kidd Clinic logo. #TheKiddClinic #DrRossGreene #CPSTraining #CollaborativeAndProactiveSolutions #CollaborativeAndProactiveSolutionsTraining #DrTheresaKidd #OptusStadium

I've been following Dr. Ross Greene's work for several years now, and what an absolute pleasure to meet him in person. Fun fact is that I designed the What's Up Flip Chart based on his drilling strategies, making it more accessible for kids who may go into verbal shutdown or find it hard to formulate "What's Up?" with them. Dr. Greene has agreed to take a look at the charts and I can't wait to hear his thoughts! Thanks to the wonderful company as well as insightful education received at the PD today. Twas a long day. #KidsDoWellIfTheyCan #CollaborativeandProactiveSolutions #BehaviourSupport #Psychology

Many of our staff and clients are already fans of Dr Ross Greene, and we are ready to absorb as much education from this opportunity as possible! Can you believe it? There are 60 days till Dr Ross Greene’s CPS training, and there so happens to be 60 tickets left! The Collaborative and Proactive Solutions (CPS) model has transformed thinking and practices in countless families, schools, inpatient psychiatric units, and residential and juvenile detention facilities throughout the world, and has been associated with dramatic reductions in adult-child conflict, concerning behaviours, disciplinary referrals, detentions, suspensions, restraints, and seclusions. The model represents a significant departure from discipline-as-usual: it focuses on solving problems rather than on modifying behaviour, emphasises collaborative rather than unilateral solutions, encourages proactive rather than reactive intervention, de-emphasises diagnostic categories, and provides practical, research- based tools for assessment and intervention. In these sessions, Dr. Greene will provide an overview of the CPS model, along with more advanced coverage of the nuances of assessment and engaging kids in solving the problems that affect their lives.
