🐄💕 Cows Are Mothers Too 💕🐄 On this Mother’s Day, let’s remember that cows are mothers too. Did you know that dairy cows are bred repeatedly to produce milk? Like human mothers, they have to have a baby to produce milk. After carrying their calves for nearly 9 months, they are separated from their babies shortly after birth so that their milk can be harvested for human consumption. Unfortunately, the dairy industry often overmilks cows, leading to health issues such as mastitis (udder inflammation). Did you know that there are allowable levels of somatic cells (essentially pus) in our milk? It’s not something we typically think about when consuming dairy products. As a raw vegan, I’ve transitioned away from processed dairy products primarily, however, If you’re curious about trying dairy-free options, check out this video I made years ago before I transitioned back to being completely raw vegan, when I was still enjoying cooked and processed foods. Entgegen der weit verbreiteten Annahme, dass Kühe für Milch nicht leiden müssen, ist die Milchindustrie unfassbar grausam: Wie wir Menschen geben weibliche Kühe nur Milch, wenn sie schwanger sind oder gerade ein Kalb geboren haben. Daher werden die Kühe immer wieder künstlich befruchtet. Diese fast dauerhafte Schwangerschaft zerrt ihren Körper so sehr aus, dass die meist nur eine Lebenserwartung von 4-5 Jahren haben, obwohl sie normalerweise bis zu 20 Jahre alt werden können. Lässt die Milchleistung nach, werden sie im Schlachthof getötet, wenn sie nicht bis dahin schon gestorben sind. Die Kälber werden ihnen direkt nach der Geburt entrissen und sowohl Kalb als auch Mutter trauern sehr stark und versuchen, sich durch lautstarke Rufe wiederzufinden. Die weiblichen Kälber werden für die Milchproduktion aufgezogen, die männlichen werden gemästet oder direkt getötet. Und wofür das alles? Dafür, dass wir als erwachsene Menschen artfremde Muttermilch trinken, obwohl es so viele pflanzliche Alternativen gibt. In the dairy industry cows are constant mothers! They are forcibly impregnated against there will every year. They are separated from their calfs almost immediately after giving birth. On this day, 15 years ago, I lost my baby son. It was my second pregnancy, after having my beloved firstborn child three years earlier (today a magnificent young man of 18). I was quite advanced through my pregnancy. He was born, fully formed, and he died instantly. Guy Fawkes fireworks Boomed in the night's sky that night. I was in hospital, standing at the window, overwhelmed, and awashed with grief. His loss was deeply traumatic. I was broken. I was empty, yet still looked pregnant, so people kept congratulating me... It was like knives to the heart. The sadness was immense, but compassion fatigue was real, and at work I was expected to come back and perform. It was very difficult. I joined a support group of mothers like me, and it was simply lifesaving. Only the miraculous birth of my beautiful daughter, five years later, had fully healed the deep pain of losing my second baby. Losing a baby that you want, love, plan for, and wait for, is something that hurts you so deeply, it is difficult to explain. I still miss him, even today. The idea of him. Who he could have been. He lives in the 8-years gap between my two beloved children. He exists in the void. A child is always a child to their mother. A loss is traumatic, and painful. And it is so, not only for human mothers. It boggles my mind that we should still force such grief on billions of bereft mothers worldwide, perpetually, just because we destine them to be our milk producing slaves. Babies that are carried in the uterus for nine months, birthed in pain, nursed with love, then stolen by force from their shocked and suffering mothers. Just for some maternal milk, sucked mechanically from sore and swollen udders, that can be so easily substituted with a nutrient-rich, pain-free, plant based milk. The advocacy group Compassion Over Killing had someone working undercover at the farm for a month and a half with a hidden camera. The farm, owned by the Martin family, contracts to provide milk to Nestle in Maryland. It issued a statement Wednesday saying it was “appalled” by the behavior shown in the video, and that the workers involved had been fired.
