Why would this Shel Silverstein poem painting make people not come?🤔 Because people’s reactions to compassion and animal rights are confusing, frustrating, and often VERY hypocritical. 😵💫 You wouldn’t eat your cat or dog, would you? Would you want someone to hurt your pet or friend? Would you want your baby taken away? Again and again and again?!?!🤬🔥🔥🔥💥💔 Most of us would say NO. Most of us would say that we love animals and don’t want to hurt them, but people who continue to eat animal products are hurting animals EVERY SINGLE DAY. And not just the animals, it’s hurting the planet and our bodies too. 🌎 And pointing this out somehow makes people angry at YOU and not the act of actual hurting.😵💫 In fact, someone recently called my Mama a “browbeater” in front of me for simply defending the rights of other living beings.😩 All of this makes me FUME and want to smash the computer I’m writing on right now. 💥🤬💥 I take this anger and I put it into my paintings and my drawings. 🖌️📝😮💨 Sometimes I want to howl like Chewbacca (and sometimes I really do), but I find it is most helpful to talk to people who understand and to keep speaking up for the animals in the hopes that it wakes more people up. Dinner in 10 minutes ✨ 🎥 by Recipe: Ingredients: - 2 servings of spaghetti/long pasta (I’m using our Plants golden tagliolini) - 2 tablespoons olive oil - ½ head broccoli, cut into small florets - 3 cloves garlic, finely sliced - 1 red chilli, finely sliced (+ extra to garnish) - 3 tablespoons coconut yoghurt (I’m using our Plants one) - 1 tablespoon harissa paste - 1 lemon, zested & juiced - pinch of sea salt & black pepper Instructions: 1. Cook the spaghetti in a pan of salted water according to the packet instructions, then drain, reserving a mugful of the cooking water. 2. Meanwhile, put the oil in a large frying pan over high heat. Add the broccoli florets and shredded stem and fry for 5 minutes until slightly softened. Add the garlic and chilli and fry for a further 30 seconds until fragrant. 3. Spoon in the coconut yoghurt, harissa, lemon zest and juice, along with a splash of the reserved pasta cooking water. Add the spaghetti and stir so that everything is well coated, adding a little more water if it’s too thick. Season to taste and serve topped with a drizzle of olive oil and a sprinkle of chilli. If Mindy were a typical hair breed sheep who gave birth on a production farm, twins Tilly and Teddy would never be named; they’d be given numbers on plastic tags piercing their tiny ears, instead. Not long after she delivered them, they’d be forcibly taken from her forever, never knowing the love and care she is so eager to provide. But fortunately Mindy is not typical; she survived a terrible cruelty case which led to her rescue and the promise of a lifetime of love and care at @poplarspringsanctuary. She is literally one in a million. Mindy arrived at Poplar already pregnant (for obvious reasons, sanctuaries are not in the breeding business), and delivered her twins in a pasture, where her caretakers maintained a respectful distance from the new family, but kept watchful eyes on her labor in case she needed help. Here, Mindy has just given birth and is meeting her babies; Teddy arrived first and waits while mom cleans up Tilly, who’s nursing for the first time (I edited out the placentas and blood for the squeamish). We’ll never know how many lambs have been taken from her before, but we can assume Teddy and Tilly are not her first, given her age. Females are nothing more than reproduction machines, and motherhood is anything but sacred on the farm, factory or otherwise; mothers are entries in an Excel spreadsheet and nothing more. Regardless of species, animal agriculture obliterates familial bonds as a matter of course, separating mother from child forever. Whether the end “product” is meat, dairy, serum, fur, wool, feathers, skin, or something else (our knack for exploitation seems endless), cruelty is foundational to farming animals. That they have “one bad day” when they’re humanely slaughtered is a Madison Avenue myth designed to assuage our guilt. Most farm animals live miserable lives of fear, pain, and deprivation from the minute they’re born until the minute they die. We’re outraged, as we should be, about Kristi Noem killing her dog (to say nothing of the goat and horses). Noem grew up on a farm, where animals’ kill dates are planned before they’re even born. He gave us color vision to recognize when fruits or vegetables are ripe, and yet we choose to eat the same 5 types of tortured animals and their bodily secretions instead. 🤯 . My Gibson Explorer is away for service at @gitarrverkstanivendel so I brought forth this old Carvin (which hasn't seen the light for some 15 years) for practice. 🎶 This is actually my first ever electric guitar and has been played on more stages than any of my other pieces as I've not had a band (where I've played guitar) for some 20 years. “LIVe and let liVe”, 2024. 100% waste: thousands of crown caps, hundreds of corks and leftover wall paint, 277 x 92cm (2/2). Part of my vegan series, it should probably read “LIVee”. In Playbill font, this quartet speaks of the Far West, easy bullets, numbing whiskey and toiled wood, where those few precious bricks were reserved for the town cell. Yet this 'mors tua, vita mea' vibe here evolves into the Vegan symbol, pointing to exactly the opposite philosophy. For I like to believe that we have indeed come this far, where we finally understand that our individual survival is strictly connected to and dependent upon the survival of all other creatures. Where diversity is not feared and suppressed, but rather welcomed and fostered. I just listened to a fascinating interview on @hopefortheanimalspodcast with Dr. Richard Twine about his new book ‘The Climate Crisis and Other Animals.’ Twine is a scholar in Critical Animal Studies, and he’s part of the first community of scholars who identify as vegan. His deeply researched position is that the climate crisis is inextricably linked with animal ethics and the politics of human-animal relations. He talks about human beings as locked in Anthropocentric thinking, which assumes that only humans count ethically, legally, and politically; and that that there is a sharp divide between humans and other animals. He credits this way of thinking as being at the root of our behaviors that have led to the climate crisis, as well as the ways we respond to the crisis by repeating the same mistakes. For example, in response to rising temperatures, scientists have been working to develop heat-resistant breeds of farmed animals, to try to adapt farmed animals to a changing, warmer climate. But this logic is totally warped – they’re trying to adapt the system we have to climate change, rather than questioning the causes of climate change and recognizing that animal agriculture is one of the most significant. Twine believes that to achieve climate and food justice we need to challenge not only the idea that animals are commodities, but also that food itself is a commodity. A profit-led food system is bad for animals, the environment, and human health, so the aim of animal advocacy should really be to take the food system out of the market. While he acknowledges that this sounds utopian, he sees it as the way to a food system that could feed everyone on Earth – and feeding everyone should of course be basic, and not just a utopian ideal!
