There has always been a lot of back and forth between farmers and sanctuaries about cows. I’m not here to tell you that a cow can’t kill you. They absolutely can. They’re 2000 pounds of grass-fueled power with spikes. People tell me all the time that they want to come for cow cuddles and that’s a big, fat no from me. I’m not going to invite visitors to come into the cow area. Not until they’re elderly and calm, and maybe not even then. I raised Maia and Arcus from the time that they were just a couple of weeks old. I’m their mom. But they’re still very young and playful, and they still think they’re the size of puppies. When they get excited and start bucking and running toward you, it is terrifying. They wouldn’t hurt me on purpose, but they could definitely hurt me on accident. Nicole and I know how to be safe while we’re working around the cows, but there are some days that we don’t even enter until after they’ve gone to the back pasture. Because individuals have different moods on different days, and we respect their autonomy. We love them safely. We plan our exits, should we need one. We snuggle over the fence, like this, and we still get stuck with horns, because that’s the way cows snuggle - with their heads. Less than one week after the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced detection of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in unpasteurized milk from dairy cattle in some areas of the United States, the BC government announced a new dairy subsidy, to a tune of $25 million dollars. The government is contributing up to $25 million toward the expansion of a milk production plant aimed at boosting the supply of locally-sourced food. Construction at Vitalus Nutrition’s plant in Abbotsford begins this summer, and will increase local milk production by 50 per cent, to 1.4 billion litres annually, and hopes to contribute to B.C.’s new industrial development blueprint, clean energy and sustainable industries. The USDA’s announcement indicated that the infection most likely came from wild birds. HPAI has not been detected in dairy cattle or other livestock in Canada yet, per the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA). The CFIA was prompt to appease consumers that pasteurization ensures milk is “safe”, and there is no evidence to suggest that eating thoroughly cooked beef could transmit avian influenza to humans. All evidence to date indicates that thorough cooking will kill the virus, the CFIA states, omitting the convenient fact that is ever present: this is the first time avian flu has been contracted by dairy cows. The evidence to date cannot attempt to account for this, because it has never existed before. Made a trip to @nativefoodscafe for dinner and got the special - Chick'n parm sandwich with fries and a buffalo chick'n tenders starter. Everything was super yummy, I am never disappointed at Native Foods. The sandwich has crispy chick'n, parmesan, provolone, and marinara sauce on a pretzel bun. Loved it!
