In the 3rd week of my cycle yatra, through a series of contacts, I got in touch with Villarasu, a 23-year-old farmer and plant & herb enthusiast. Actually, you can call him a self-taught herbalist! He took me on a fast-paced wild food & herb walk around his village. The depth of his knowledge was astounding. I had to ask him to speak slowly because his Tamil was much more advanced than mine. Since the age of 8, he has been interested in plants and the traditional knowledge about them. He spends most of his time traveling to villages, hills, and forests to learn from communities. Then, he brings back seeds/plant cuttings and grows them on his farm. He took me through his biodiverse farm, and it was incredible to witness the depth of his self-taught knowledge. He showed me a village lake where an area is completely wild. “I threw some seeds of herbs and planted stem cuttings to rewild this land, and it’s been 4-5 years since then. Look how the whole place has grown into a small forest.” He was right; the area he showed was indeed a mini forest. It’s incredible that a 23-year-old boy single-handedly rewilded it. “This helps with holding water in the soil and keeping it rich. Otherwise, in a water-scarce landscape like ours, summers get very difficult” he added. Meeting a visionary and ecologist like Villarasu was truly something. He continues to do his work quietly in his village. When I was leaving his village, he called his entire extended family to come and meet up and for a group photo. Just to assemble for the group photo it took us 45 mins. It was really funny because everybody wanted to be a part of the photo, and we kept waiting for family members to arrive, and I kept delaying my departure. In the first week of our yatra, one day the heat was brutal, and as noon approached, we sought a shaded place to rest. In the scorching sun, we spotted a sacred grove across the road with a sacred fig and a peanut tree. We decided to make it our spot for the afternoon. As we crossed the road and made our way to the grove, a couple of men and boys were painting a wall nearby and were, for obvious reasons, intrigued. One of them walked towards us and said something we didn't understand, so we simply smiled. He left on his Luna bike and returned shortly after with a big bottle of chilled Frooti. "It's too hot, and you've been cycling, you should drink," he insisted. Then the others joined, and they introduced themselves. Nagaraju Anna (the one wearing shades and who gifted us the Frooti) is a painter who does advertisement wall paintings and also paints sculptures in the temples. He was really happy to meet us and insisted that we have Frooti. Soon after a selfie session and a bit of chit-chat, they left, saying, "Please rest." We cycled 176 km in the first week of our yatra. This photo captures the moment on the final stretch to Tirupati, where we stumbled upon this enormous Banyan tree and decided to rest as the sun grew hotter. The route from Puttur to Tirupati was one of the most memorable paths I've experienced on this yatra. Cycling towards our destination, Tirupati, was exhilarating. For women like me and @acemballi, who aren't conventionally seen as 'fit,' cycling on our own terms was liberating. This yatra shattered many misconceptions I held about my body and fitness. I don't have to be 'thin' to be fit, nor 'fit' to embark on adventurous endeavors. Unfortunately, the wellness industry has distorted the meaning of 'fit,' creating a struggle, especially for women who don't conform to conventional body standards. Reaching Tirupati filled my heart with joy and gratitude. I felt invincible, a feeling unaffected by insensitive comments about my body from relatives, friends, or strangers. Reflecting on my 720 km cycling journey across South India, one common theme emerged: the alarming state of our country's garbage situation. From cities to towns to villages, the difference in waste production was glaring. Leaving cities behind meant encountering hills of garbage, where animals (cows, dogs, pugs & birds) grazed amidst the waste. Two tier towns faced their own challenges, with garbage omnipresent on every street in some places. Yet, villages stood out for their cleaner surroundings. The closer we pedaled to cities, the more prevalent the garbage became. It's clear that addressing India's garbage crisis requires fundamental policy changes. But the elephant in the room, in my view, is the caste system, perpetuating a cycle where those who create waste avoid responsibility, leaving it to others to take care of it. Our caste-based society is structured so that those who generate garbage never handle it; instead, the responsibility falls on those who haven't created it. This creates a scenario where the privileged, driven by consumerism, perpetuate the cycle. It's a dangerous mix of capitalism intertwined with the caste system, where consumption is rampant, yet garbage disposal remains stuck in caste-based norms. 'Not in my backyard, not my issue' seems to be the prevailing attitude. Only when we develop empathy for others will we address the mess we create through consumption. But the road to that realization feels long and arduous. Viele von Ihnen haben bereits Millionen von Fischen und anderen Tieren freigelassen. Viele von Ihnen haben Millionen von Arya Tara-Praktiken und andere Praktiken für Langlebigkeitsgottheiten wie den Langlebens-Buddha durchgeführt. Ich habe keine Worte, um euch allen auf der ganzen Welt zu danken. Lasst uns alle die Daumen für eine bessere Zukunft drücken. Im Allgemeinen müssen wir alle durch die Wellen des Samsara gehen. Wir haben keine anderen Möglichkeiten und Optionen, um diese Wellen zu vermeiden. Die einzige Lösung besteht darin, sich fit zu halten und auf alle Bedingungen vorbereitet zu sein. Ich weiß nicht, wie gut wir darauf vorbereitet sind, wenn es um diese Art von Bedingungen geht. Die Bedingungen des Alterns, die Bedingungen der Krankheit und viele andere. Ich prüfe mich immer selbst. Wie gut sind meine körperlichen und geistigen Voraussetzungen, um all diesen verschiedenen Wellen zu begegnen? Und ich widme den größten Teil meiner Zeit der Übung meines Weges (innerer, äußerer und geheimer Yoga). Ich hoffe und bete, dass alle meine Freunde dasselbe tun, so dass alle Arten von unterschiedlichen Bedingungen ohne große Probleme erlebt werden können. Wir nennen es die Überwindung des Problems. Ich glaube nicht an die Überwindung des Problems, aber das Problem kann als ein Kinderspiel betrachtet werden! Das ist das Ergebnis unserer Übung (Yoga). Ich bin immer sehr aufgeregt darüber. Viele von Ihnen haben bereits Millionen von Fischen und anderen Tieren freigelassen. Viele von Ihnen haben Millionen von Arya Tara-Praktiken und andere Praktiken für Langlebigkeitsgottheiten wie den Langlebens-Buddha durchgeführt. Ich habe keine Worte, um euch allen auf der ganzen Welt zu danken. Lasst uns alle die Daumen für eine bessere Zukunft drücken. Im Allgemeinen müssen wir alle durch die Wellen des Samsara gehen. Wir haben keine anderen Möglichkeiten und Optionen, um diese Wellen zu vermeiden. Die einzige Lösung besteht darin, sich fit zu halten und auf alle Bedingungen vorbereitet zu sein. Ich weiß nicht, wie gut wir darauf vorbereitet sind, wenn es um diese Art von Bedingungen geht. Die Bedingungen des Alterns, die Bedingungen der Krankheit und viele andere. Ich prüfe mich immer selbst. Wie gut sind meine körperlichen und geistigen Voraussetzungen, um all diesen verschiedenen Wellen zu begegnen? Und ich widme den größten Teil meiner Zeit der Übung meines Weges (innerer, äußerer und geheimer Yoga). Ich hoffe und bete, dass alle meine Freunde dasselbe tun, so dass alle Arten von unterschiedlichen Bedingungen ohne große Probleme erlebt werden können. Wir nennen es die Überwindung des Problems. Ich glaube nicht an die Überwindung des Problems, aber das Problem kann als ein Kinderspiel betrachtet werden! Das ist das Ergebnis unserer Übung (Yoga). Ich bin immer sehr aufgeregt darüber. This morning, when I saw these pictures, they motivated me to go and lead the European Eco Cycle Yatra which will be happening in May. Let me see how my health is going to be by then, and also my mum‘s condition. Actually, my mum is doing pretty well lately. My heartfelt thanks go to all of my friends around the world, praying and engaging in lots of good deeds for the benefit of her health. Many of you have already completed releasing millions of fishes and other animals. Many of you have accomplished millions of Arya Tara practices and other longevity deities practices, like long life Buddha. I have no words to thank all of you around the world. Let us all put our fingers crossed for the better future. Generally speaking, we all have to go through the waves of Samsara. We have no other choices and options to avoid these waves. The only solution is to keep oneself fit and prepared to face all the conditions. I don’t know how well prepared we are when it comes to this kind of conditions. Conditions of aging, conditions of ill-health and many others. I always examine myself. How well are my physical and mental conditions to face all these kind of different waves? And I’m dedicating most of my time to exercise my path (inner, external and secret Yoga). I hope and pray that all of my friends will also be doing the same thing so that all sorts of different conditions can be experienced without that much of problems. We may be calling it overcome the problem. I don’t believe in overcoming the problem, but the problem can be seen as a piece of cake! That is the result of our exercise (Yoga). After cycling approximately 720 km, of which I solo cycled 500 km, I finally made it back home! It was a surreal experience, the entire journey, but more than that, the reception I received in my hometown! Family members, family friends, party people, and random strangers came together to welcome me, and the socially awkward me was truly humbled. The cycle journey expanded my understanding of home; over the last 47 days, I was hosted by some really amazing human beings, and most of the places became part of my larger home. Anyway, I am still reeling from the experiences of the journey, and it's taking time to adjust back into my daily routine and remind myself that I won't be picking up my cycle tomorrow to pedal 50 something km to reach the next destination. As much as I miss the road, I also love returning to this part of my life. There are many more stories that I documented during the journey, so stay tuned as I share them when the time is right. One of the curious cheerleaders during my yatra has been children. These two kids spotted me cycling on their way to school. So, they caught up to me on their father's bike, read the board, and wanted to know all about my journey. I shared, and they listened eagerly. They shared that they were Sri Lankan refugees and have been living here for the last 13 years or so. When I asked the father his name, he took a moment and then said 'Suresh.' His Tamil was distinctly different; it had a 'slang'. He is a photographer, and when I asked him how it's been in a different land, he said, 'Oh, all of the people are my friends... I have a photographers community that is very close to me.' They invited me home, but I had a long distance to cycle, so I declined with a heavy heart. ## Cycle Yatra Milestone: 500 Km Conquered! 🇮🇳♀️ Today marks a momentous occasion in my 10,000 km cycling odyssey! Not only did I conquer a glorious 27 km today, but I've officially surpassed the 500 km mark, pushing my total distance to a mighty 516 km! This journey, like the spicy Andhra pickles, has been a delightful mix of challenge and reward. Remember that cheeky chittemma (aunt) who, after seeing my starting post, chuckled and said, "10,000 km ante? Inka oka vారం (vāram - week) lo mundu vestisukov!" (meaning "With 10,000 km, you'll be back with a dhoti wrapped around you in a week!") Well, chittemma garu, this dhoti (or should I say cycling shorts) is still going strong! Reaching this milestone is a testament to sheer grit, fueled by countless cups of aromatic filter kaapi (South Indian strong coffee), and the pure, unadulterated joy of exploring Andhra Pradesh on two wheels.
