Sometimes we do things that look stupid and are actually stupid. That was the case that day. It's said that from the top of the mountain, you have a fantastic view of the steep slopes of the island of Værøy. But by the time we set off in the morning, the island's peaks had disappeared into the clouds. Frustration. We decided to go anyway. For once it isn't raining at sea level, we're the ones who'll be looking for water in the clouds! As soon as we start climbing, we enter a milky mist and are drenched with a fine but very wet drizzle. The wind is biting our faces. Once we reach the "top", nothing changes in the thick white that surrounds us, apart from the phantasmagorical silhouettes of the antennae, the tops of which we can't even make out. A bit of chocolate wouldn't be enough to save this general fiasco, which culminates in the descent onto the tarmac road, which puts a strain on all our joints. . Parfois on fait des trucs qui ont l’air stupide et qui le sont totalement. C’était le cas ce jour-là. Il parait que depuis le sommet de la montagne, on a une vue formidable sur les reliefs abruptes de l’île de Værøy. Mais le temps que l’on démarre le matin, les sommets de l’île disparaissent dans les nuages. Frustration. Nous décidons d’y aller quand même. Pour une fois qu’il ne pleuvait pas au niveau de la mer, c’est nous qui allons chercher l’eau dans les nuages ! A peine la montée entamée, nous pénétrons dans une brume laiteuse et nous faisons copieusement arrosé d’une bruine toute fine mais bien mouillante. Le vent nous cingle le visage. Arrivés « en haut », rien ne change dans le blanc épais qui nous entoure si ce n’est les silhouettes fantasmagoriques des antennes dont nous ne distinguerons même pas le sommet. At least I have straightforward answers to those, but this is one I hardly have figured out myself, let alone give a satisfactory answer on the fly on the side of the road... Je dois admettre que je préfère les questions tout aussi fréquentes : "quelle est ta mission ?", "pour quelle cause collectes-tu des fonds ?" ou "où est ta voiture ?". Au moins, j'ai des réponses simples à ces questions, mais celle-là, j'ai du mal à y répondre moi-même et encore moins à y répondre de manière satisfaisante à la volée sur le bord de la route... After quite a few days cycling on my own, it was great to get to Mocoa and to meet up with @gudukato and @worldofjacky. After a night out partying and drinking too much rum, me and @worldofjacky said our goodbyes to @gudukato and headed off towards Pasto. The road from Mocoa to Pasto includes the notorious Trampolín de la Muerte or Springboard of Death ☠️. At under 70 km long, this unsurfaced road winds its way up through the Andes through dense jungle, past waterfalls and memorial stones, and crossing rivers swollen by the recent rain. The road was built in the 1930s to help move Colombian troops around the border. Although we had a lot of rain on the first night, we were lucky with the weather and treated to great views of the forest, the mountains and over towards the start of the Amazon basin on the border between Colombia and Ecuador. The rain during the first night only added to the drama, filling the rivers and waterfalls. Cycling the Americas - days 289-293 First impressions of the 6th country of this journey, Costa Rica! From the capital San José in the aptly named Central Valley, we cycled through the mountains back to the Caribbean coast. Picture 1 - Last glimpse of Mexico from the plane. Picture 2 - Unboxing and assembling the bikes after the flight. Picture 3 - Downtown San José. Pictures 4-7 - The long and arduous ride to the coast. Coffee plantations and downpours included. Pictures 8&9 - The sloth is the national animal of Costa Rica. We didn't stop at the famous Sloth Sanctuary but spotted a sleeping one a few kilometres down the road. 14/03/24 London by train - £55 London by bike - Free Pedaling through the night I found a nice sheltered spot for a kip. Sir Giles Gilbert Scott designed the K6 phone box in 1935, this one still had a phone in it. I perched on a tatty phone book for some insulation, stuck my feet out of the door and let myself and the GPS recharge for about half an hour. Making the most of the quiet roads I cycled down the ancient road of Watling Street until dawn where the big lorries of the night, (who all gave me lots of space) gave way to the dangerous rush of the commuter. The rush swept me into the headache of Milton Keynes with a road layout so simple that everyone gets lost. The wealth of history at Bletchley Park almost made up for Milton Keynes, but nothing ever could really. Over rolling hills, London still loomed beyond the towns of Leighton Buzzard and Hemel Hempstead. In almost one full rotation of the planet I made it 180 miles from my front door to Adam's. When on a bike you feel the landscape, interact with it and breath it in. People have been travelling by bike since the Draisienne of the early 1800s, 43 years before the invention of the combustion engine. It has been 5 years since I started this trip(the plan was only for 2 years😅) and although I love travelling I need to take a rest and see family again 😅 So I'll be heading back up north over the next few weeks towards Buenos Aires and will fly back to Europe and then from there ride back to the Isle of Man. The Pan Celtic Ultra takes intrepid cyclists across the Celtic nations via rugged landscapes and soggy bus shelters. Each race accepts around 300 riders, measures between 2,000-2,500km and takes in up to three of these nations. They often include gravel sections, a good few ferry crossings, a long and short option, and frequently end – conveniently – in Llandudno, Mally’s home town. Whatever the distance, the race’s mantra will accompany you: ‘An té a bhíónn siúlach, bíonn scéalach’. WE BIKED FOR 6 MONTHS IN SOUTH AFRICA 🥳 Let’s discuss the country's reputation for crime… Yes, it’s here, and yes, it can be dangerous. The good news is that crime is confined to localised areas, making it easy to avoid. As a result, we were never threatened or robbed and felt safe 99.99% of the time. Small towns are usually quite safe, but cities contain lots of roads and suburbs to avoid. Make sure to ask the local people where to go, and where to avoid, and it’s unlikely you’ll have any problems. 👍🏻 The off-road biking adventures in the country feel endless. There are dirt tracks in every direction and the backdrops are unbelievably dramatic! We couldn’t believe the places we got to bike and camp through - it was a new adventure every day. 💎 South Africa is home to some of the most pristine environments on Earth, and the national parks are truly epic places. Kruger is famous for a reason: the sheer scale, raw beauty, and diversity of animals are incredible. But the dozen other NPs we visited were virtually as good, including Table Mountain! If you want your mind blown by rare plants and their unique adaptations, visit Richtersveld, the only arid biodiversity hotspot on earth! If you’re into good food and wine, you will be in heaven in South Africa. The region around Cape Town is where to take your taste buds on a date - it’s a foodie's dream. The best wines we sampled were in Stellenbosch. Don’t miss a trip to Lesotho, the landlocked country in South Africa, as it has a completely different culture and traditions. The entire country is at altitude, with great views everywhere, and the Basotho people ride around on horses wearing blankets! What’s not to like? And lastly, South Africa has a dark history that is worth understanding. We honestly couldn’t believe the depths of the institutionalised racial segregation that ended just 30 years ago. You will still find that racism permeates society, with many kindhearted, well-meaning locals completely clueless about their racism. But it’s best to remind yourself of the beliefs these people were taught from a young age - if this was your worldview for a long time, you too might still think this way. 🤷♂️
It was a bit of a mad rush to the immigration office, he wanted to leave early. It took a couple of hours but I had my visa extension. I then decided to visit the Borobudur Temple, the immigration officer was nearby. It's an amazing structure and took over 100 years to build. Starting off the ride at Girona’s old town, at one of the many classic coffee places like La Fabrica, Espresso Maffia. Leaving the city centre and heading in the northern direction, it won’t take long before hitting the first gravel roads. cycling Europe · days 47 to 49 The last days were rainy, cold and flat. I even had to shelter from a hailstorm one evening! 📍Miliwane Wildlife Reserve. Miliwane is the first wildlife reserve that we have been able to cycle around! They don’t have predotors or large mammals so its safe to ride around oh bikes. We spent a day riding around with the bags off our bikes, but instead of seeing many animals we mostly just hiked our bikes. 😅
