After a terrible night's sleep, we were torn as to what to do! No one was enthusiastic for a day of hanging out at the petrol station, but it was a long way to the first spot where we were sure we had protected camping and we were going to be pedalling into a very strong headwind. Eventually, we decided to go for it. @rich_tb suggested we form a pelotón and take it in turns to do 3km at the front. I think it was the only way we got through the day...progress was slow and only got slower as the wind got stronger! We were hit with brutal winds from the side blowing us sideways but somehow we muddled through. We were so grateful when the police station came into sight 78km later and we realised we have made it! To add insult to injury, the next morning we absolutely flew to the border with a beautiful tail wind! We crossed back into Chile...for the final time this trip and initially we decided to head south towards Puerto Natales with a plan to hitchhike back with backpacks and do some hiking in Torres del Paine. Garmin tells me it recorded no sleep and that pretty much sums up my flying from ChCh > Dubai, which it turns out is a rather long time. I’ve never been able to sleep on a Plane. But we were well watered and fed and the stopovers weren’t too horrid and short story long we are in Surrey. The flights were chocker block though. WE BIKED FOR 6 MONTHS IN SOUTH AFRICA 🥳 Let’s discuss the country's reputation for crime… Yes, it’s here, and yes, it can be dangerous. The good news is that crime is confined to localised areas, making it easy to avoid. As a result, we were never threatened or robbed and felt safe 99.99% of the time. Small towns are usually quite safe, but cities contain lots of roads and suburbs to avoid. Make sure to ask the local people where to go, and where to avoid, and it’s unlikely you’ll have any problems. 👍🏻 The off-road biking adventures in the country feel endless. There are dirt tracks in every direction and the backdrops are unbelievably dramatic! We couldn’t believe the places we got to bike and camp through - it was a new adventure every day. 💎 South Africa is home to some of the most pristine environments on Earth, and the national parks are truly epic places. Kruger is famous for a reason: the sheer scale, raw beauty, and diversity of animals are incredible. But the dozen other NPs we visited were virtually as good, including Table Mountain! If you want your mind blown by rare plants and their unique adaptations, visit Richtersveld, the only arid biodiversity hotspot on earth! If you’re into good food and wine, you will be in heaven in South Africa. The region around Cape Town is where to take your taste buds on a date - it’s a foodie's dream. The best wines we sampled were in Stellenbosch. Don’t miss a trip to Lesotho, the landlocked country in South Africa, as it has a completely different culture and traditions. The entire country is at altitude, with great views everywhere, and the Basotho people ride around on horses wearing blankets! What’s not to like? And lastly, South Africa has a dark history that is worth understanding. We honestly couldn’t believe the depths of the institutionalised racial segregation that ended just 30 years ago. You will still find that racism permeates society, with many kindhearted, well-meaning locals completely clueless about their racism. But it’s best to remind yourself of the beliefs these people were taught from a young age - if this was your worldview for a long time, you too might still think this way. 🤷♂️

📍Miliwane Wildlife Reserve. Miliwane is the first wildlife reserve that we have been able to cycle around! They don’t have predotors or large mammals so its safe to ride around oh bikes. We spent a day riding around with the bags off our bikes, but instead of seeing many animals we mostly just hiked our bikes. 😅

El Salvador 🇸🇻 Pupusas. Punctures. Playas. We tried Pupusas at every opportunity…they are similar to a thick hand-pressed tortilla and come with a variety of fillings (beans, meat etc) plus cheese and then grilled until the cheese is melted ❤️ Our favourite was the Revuelta Pupusa - cheese, beans and seasoned pork 🤤 Served with a cabbage slaw and fresh tomato salsa. Unfortunately our luck with limited punctures had come to an end. We had multiple punctures most days… time for some new tyres! The up-side is that we are now pros at changing inner tubes at the side of the road! Playas…there are so many amazing beaches along the south coast of El Salvador. We spent a lovely 2 weeks in Tasmania! A quick stopover in Australia - we loved seeing the wildlife and colourful birds. The east coast is beautiful with lovely landscapes and great National Parks. hello!!! first looks at Tromsø and I am blown away!!! when I was about 13 years old I started my first ever official ‘travel bucketlist’ in an old notebook I had laying around. I started by writing down all of the countries I wanted to go to and then thought that I’d go one by one, doing research to fill in all of the specifics on things I wanted to see and do in that country Norway was the first country on that list and I got so immediately hooked on the landscape that I literally never moved on to country number two. I filled the whole notebook with all of the hikes, lakes, viewpoints, towns and famous spots that I wanted to see! safe to say this is a little dream come true to be here and I can’t believe over the next few months I’m going to cycle through some of the places that past Annabelle scribbled down in that notebook! 💭🌎 feeling extremely grateful and excited for what’s to come, and I can’t wait to get back on the bike and bring you along too :)

. Hello 👋🏼 I thought I’d try an intro post seeing as so many of you have connected over this last year of adventure and maybe you’re curious about the back story… so here goes nothing! I’m proudly Welsh 🏴 and I appreciate even more after this year of travelling how much this means to me. The language, the culture and how much our ancestors strived to protect these will always be a strong part of my identity. In 2015 I moved to Bristol 🌉🐊 and I found it super lonely to be in a new city at first I eventually built an amazing community of riders and adventurers there. It’s where I call home for now, until we figure out where we resettle after returning to the Uk. 2017 was a big year for me, I was signed up to race The Transcontinental and Liam came into my life. The race didn’t end how I imagined but it transformed my life as I’d found my passion in long distance cycling and I’d found my life and adventure partner 💕 Chronic back pain 🩻🦴since late 2019 I’ve been living with mysterious night time back pain. At times it’s been unbearable and I’ve had to endure a lot of stiffness and sleep deprivation and at times I’ve thrived managing well on movement practice, physio and osteopathy. Camping ⛺️ has always been a reliable trigger so when we started this trip I really wasn’t confident we’d get much further than Peru. So given I’m writing this in El Chaltén I’m beyond grateful to my body for getting me this far… but I am ready to sleep a bed again 😂 And finally… how did I get the nickname Dr Thunderthighs?! When I started uni I took up rowing, the first sport I ever loved and it turned out I was really strong 🦵🏼💪🏼🏋️♀️ so I became McThunderthighs. This might have also spared my crew-mates having to use my surname 😂 and after I got my PhD 👩🏼🎓 my nickname got the upgrade! The thunderthighs live on even if I left academia a long time ago! We were disappointed to find that on leaving Calafate, we didn't get much of a tailwind...like we should have. We made little progress all day due to a flat and strong headwinds. We aimed for a camping spit but when we arrived, someone else was in it, and there was only room for one tent. With no choice, we kept cycling into the unknown. The weather deteriorated further...so much so that a truck pulled over and offered us a lift. We gratefully accepted...and half an hour later we were outside a highway maintenance office where we could camp. We lucked out when the supervisor invited us in to warm up next to his log fire and offered us a place to sleep in a room with two more cyclists, who had also been rescued just a few hours earlier - we felt a bit better in the knowledge that others had expected very different weather too. The supervisor has clearly worked out that by offering cyclists a place to sleep, he can get them to cook him dinner. He suggested a shared meal...put two packets of mince beef on the side and asked us to contribute some food from our packs to make a meal and then he returned to watching "house of cards"! We are all too grateful to be inside and warm to take issue, so we rustled up some Spaghetti Bolognese. After witnessing a decent sunrise, we cycled 3km down our route before needing to make a U-turn because of the peanut butter mud!! El Calafate is famous as a stopping off point for the Perito Moreno glacier. But it was still another 70km west of the town so we decided we didn't fancy the cycle and we instead hitchhiked out to the glacier. We were picked up almost instantly by another Brit @lydiaforster who was driving out to visit the glacier. We had a lovely ride out there chatting and enjoying the views of the national park - it really looked just as we imagined Patagonia to look...snow covered peaks and bright blue lakes. When the glacier came into view, it was really something. Well, that was even tougher than we expected. All of the riders are in from the inaugural @hellenicmountainrace . Bear tracks, wolf sightings, unrelenting climbs, the cold, the wet and the majesty of Greek mountains, all summed up the experience at the Hellenic. In the women’s field, there was an intense battle between Katie Jane @katiejaneendurance who despite suffering mechanical issues and serious leg injuries legs earlier in the race kept tight to Quinda Verheul @avoidtheavoid till the end. The race was a nail-biting finish with Quinda taking the win in just over 7 days with Katie following close behind. For the men’s field, the race finish saw the lead riders roll in with @adrien__liechti taking the overall win @manu.truccolo following closely behind, coming in a few hours after. A special thanks goes to @nelsontrees for bringing us the 3rd race in the Mountain Race Series: a wild adventure through the mountainous region of Greece. We hiked Volcan Acatenango which provided epic views of Volcan de Fuego erupting through the night and day! We celebrated Liv’s birthday with a chocolate making masterclass and frozen margaritas! Our time cycling in Guatemala ❤️ We crossed the border from Mexico by bus and arrived in Flores, a small town by the beautiful lake Peten. We took some time off the bikes to explore the incredible Tikal ruins. We were lucky to see Toucans and Howler monkeys during our visit. The savage steep climbs of Guatemala lived up to their reputation but the scenery and many people waving and smiling to us from the side of the road distracted us from our burning legs! We stumbled across a camp spot next to some underground caves and we were welcomed in by the local community. The children showed us their favourite swim spot by the river and we had lots of fun playing games and practising our Spanish and trying to speak some of their indigenous language.
