Artist Michael Bell has a fabulous exhibition on in Cessnock in the Hunter Valley. It last one more week so well worth visiting this weekend or next before it closes. I have known Michael since he was an art student and I was at uni in Newcastle at the start of the 1980s. An old friend, a lovely human being. He asked me to open his exhibition a month or so ago. 7 March 1986 25 years old Got to New Merlin's Cave with Kerry, complete with little Merlin figures on the carpet and cave-like ceiling. I liked it there instantly, the atmosphere was groovy and relaxed, not pretentious. Met a girl at the bar from Sydney. We had a good chat. The support band were good enough, but not inspiring. Saw Victor through the crowd, but then the band started, said Hi and that I’d speak to him afterwards. I enjoyed The Moodists, and thought of the last time I saw them, supporting PiL in Melbourne. Also at the gig a member of Mental as Anything and Harry Howard, looking as stunning as ever. Afterwards chatted to Victor and exchanged numbers. He was nice but low due to the flu. Felt really good about staying. Going out tonight was almost like going out at home. From memory, this was the first gig I went to after arriving in London. I had the feeling, then, that I might not make it—would not manage to live there for a year, as I originally hoped. It was difficult finding somewhere to live, and difficult finding a half-decent job. Miraculously (eventually) everything fell into place and I ended up in a fab share house paying next to nothing for rent, and in a job I loved, in a design studio in Soho. Went to a ton of gigs and had lots of adventures. Oh, and I stayed for almost three years! I walked into the op shop in the beautiful town of Gundagai and came out with two pairs of RM Williams. $20 each. That doesn’t happen every day. I already have a pair, which I bought in 1994. Clare’s mother Moya once had a job working for RM. 80s Melbourne rockers swore by them. They were costly then but nothing like $400-500 you’d have to spend now. Rowland Howard favoured cutting off the loops you put your finger in to get them on. They should have got him to do an ad for them, sitting on a horse.
