Best pack for desert wandering? I guess that’s truly subjective, but I’ve been a huge fan of the @mountainsmith Day Lumbar Pack for years. It’s gotten loads of dirt miles on it and functions really well in a desert environment. Adding Mountainsmith’s Strapettes helps you load out the lumbar pack enough that you can go a little heavy with it, and this comes in handy when you’re bringing lots of water with you on a long desert hike. The pack sits off your back, thus helping regulate body heat while moving under the desert sun, and allowing what breeze is around on continue to hit and cool your core. It’s rugged and carries my desert backcountry necessities well, and I even added a @tuffpossumgear belt pouch to the left side hip belt. This increase that capacity by a little more and made often used items more accessible. The pack sits low and allows for ducking in and around mesquite basques and avoiding the pesky cat claw bushes one runs into while wandering the desert wilds. All in all, after many years, it’s become my desert go-to bag. I’ve overnighted with it many a times, and scouted out more than a few new areas while carrying the Day Lumbar along. Desert backcountry cutting tools. I walked into my desert wilderness skills journey with a lot of misconceptions about what tools were needed to function well with minimal kit when in the desert wilds. Many things have changed since the beginning of that journey. Personally, understandings, knowledge base, items brought along. I’ve been fortunate to have met and learned from people (both in person and in reading) who made the desert home long before I’d the thought of journeying into it myself. A lot of time spent in the bush, learning, relearning and then trying again has led me to choose things that I didn’t originally favor (some things even came full circle lol). What I get asked the most (by far...) is: what cutting tools do you bring along (a close second is about footwear). Honestly, after trying many combos and talking with many desert rats (with much more experience than me), the common thread of the small folding saw and small (often pukko type) knife emerged. This worked so well for me, that for a few years all I was using was a Morakniv Classic and a Bahco folding saw. The desert is sparse and often more accommodating to these smaller tools. When asked this is still generally the combo I’ll recommend. No hatchets, no larger chopping blades; just keeping the weight light and simple (and often substituting the forgone weight for another water bottle). This isn’t to say other things aren’t tried and experimented with, but certain things you just tend to come back to, because they just work. Know your environment, pick gear that suits it, test yourself with it, change accordingly. Remember, you’re best tool sits in between your ears. Go outside. . . . Outdoor Hydration. As it’s heating up here in the desert, water stays on the forefront of my mind on all of my trips. While in the winter I’ll generally just boil water, this comes with a myriad of downsides as our temps creep up towards triple digits here in AZ. Clean water is essential to your longevity outdoors, and this is the combo I’ve been using exclusively for over the last year. The @sawyerproducts Squeeze I’ve been using since my jaunt on the PCT and it is so far my favorite back country water filter. It balances size, weight, and flow rate exceptionally well. The @cnocoutdoors Vecto I’ve had for over a year now, and has become my favorite of all the water collection/storage bags I’ve used over years of backpacking and wilderness walking. It’s very flexible while maintaining abrasion resistance, and the ability to slide open the bag’s end makes a huge difference while collecting water from shallow and non-flowing water sources (and that’s many of them in the desert). All in all, I don’t see this combo changing at all anytime soon.
