🌳 Happy Arbor Day! 🌳 It’s our favorite holiday of the year - Arbor Day! This year we celebrated once again by planting a Triumph Elm with the 4th Grade class at MVK! We start with a science and environment lesson about the benefits of trees, and then the kids get right to digging in the dirt! This tradition began many years ago when our daughter was in kindergarten and we’ve been planting trees with kids ever since! This year was extra special to have so many family members plant with us - our nieces and nephews Cash, Sky, and Jett and the @itreeschicago team Marlee and Brittany, our grandkids Fern and Benji and daughter, Maggie, and my mom and her brother, Ted! It truly is a family affair and we couldn’t do it without them! The tree is planted in honor of our Uncle Freddy who dedicated his life to teaching. He passed away last week, and the comments we have witnessed flooding in from his former students about how he made a difference in their lives is quite an inspiration. He was the type of teacher who left a mark! Maintaining Standards: Why Men Marry Bitches by Sherry Argov 💍 This quintessential dating guide was highly influential to me when I was 20 and looking to properly enter the dating pool. First published in 2006 as a follow-up to her book titled Why Men Love Bitches, author Sherry Argov lays out the foundational principles of self-worth and how it relates to women conducting themselves properly in relationships. The term "BITCH" is translated as "Babe In Total Control of Herself" and describes a woman with standards, self-respect, who is kind but not a pushover. There are interviews and insights with both women and men about what they look for in relationships and what behaviors they will not tolerate. In terms of starting to date someone, there are examples of how to signal interest and availability without acting desperate; alternatively, red flags to look out for with dating. The book is filled with solid advice that I know I do not have to second guess. I always appreciated how straightforward and honest Sherry Argov's writing is. I cannot recommend this book enough, and women & men alike can benefit from reading it if they wish to improve their dating life and romantic relationships. I read this one no less than three times and the author released an updated & expanded version in 2017 that I'm interested in checking out even though I'm engaged. On a personal and vulnerable note, I will share one of my own experiences— my first serious boyfriend was an abusive narcissist and I will not blame that on this book, but I absolutely have to give WMMB credit for providing me with solid guidance to navigate dating and realize that I was in a bad relationship. Nobody is immune to falling into an abusive relationship when manipulation factors in, especially until you've experienced it and can recognize these behavioral patterns. I also need to point out that sometimes you need to get to the root of psychological problems and understand core wounds to go hand-in-hand with relationship advice. (Notable psychology books I've read that may be of interest: Psychopath Free by Jackson MacKenzie and Adult Children of Emotionally Immature Parents by Lindsay C. Gibson, PsyD)

📚Backlist Books: I mentioned in my stories the other day that I’ve been enjoying older books more lately. Recently, the market feels flooded with books that are just okay reads (at best). 🌎 Happy Earth Day! 🌎 Every day is Earth Day here on the farm! There’s lots of beautiful photos we could choose from to include in an Earth Day post from pictures of budding trees in the field, worms in the soil, creatures in the nursery, or from our travels abroad or to beautiful National Parks. But lately we’ve been really drawing inspiration from our family’s forest just down the road. The wildflowers are in full bloom - Bluebells, Mayapples, Bloody Noses, Dutchman’s Breeches, Purple and Yellow Violets, Phlox, Spring Beauties, Cutleaf Toothwort, Trout Lilies… I’m sure there are many more that we haven’t seen yet or know are out there! We love discovering the beauty our Earth holds just in our own backyard. It helps us pause, reflect, and take a moment to bask in the peaceful glory the sunshine peeking through the canopy brings. On this Earth Day, we want to share a poem from one of our favorite poets - Mary Oliver. We draw a lot of inspiration from her work, and find that it resonates with us across all seasons of life. Here is her poem, Sleeping in the Forest: Sleeping in the Forest By: Mary Oliver I thought the earth remembered me, she took me back so tenderly, arranging her dark skirts, her pockets full of lichens and seeds. I slept as never before, a stone on the riverbed, nothing between me and the white fire of the stars but my thoughts, and they floated light as moths among the branches of the perfect trees. All night I heard the small kingdoms breathing around me, the insects, and the birds who do their work in the darkness. All night I rose and fell, as if in water, grappling with a luminous doom.
