Hi there😊,I'm Opeyemi Obaleye, thisladydesigner!😌... I'm a graphic designer by passion and also a lover of poetry. Design isn't just a hobby for me; It's what I love doing and my expertise. I weave stories through colours, shapes, text and images. And as a lover of poetry, I can say words have a way of evoking emotions, capturing moments, and connecting us to the essence of life. I love immersing myself in poetry, finding beauty in every verse. While I haven't penned my own yet, I'm constantly inspired by the poetic expressions of others. Can I get to know you?đŸ€— Tell me about your interests in the comments below! New Line Just In... Chasing the illusion of perfection On the hamster wheel of fast fashion. Churn. Churn. The forests burn. We never learn. Apps. Apps. Drip. Drip. We trickle into each other's existence Through the likes and comments. Click. Tap. Tap. Click. Validate ME! Validate ME! And the void deepens inside. Nowhere to hide. Screens scream at us everywhere, Reflecting the true state of our despair. Flat packed humanity. Stifling our creativity. Fueling our insanity. The dark binding cotton of the uniform. Voluntary confinement to ideals not my own. The marching beat to which we conform. Tick. Tick. Trick. Trick. Give the dog a bone. What treadmill am I on? The prescribed circular pattern on repeat. I subscribed my soul to happiness. Carrot on the stick. New trick. New trick. What meal deal shall I eat? The prescribed circular pattern on repeat. © 2024 Camille Smith This poem was inspired by the exhibition @glasgowgoma - NHOTB & RAD by creative directors Beagles and Ramsay - on now until 28th April 2024. #artandpoetry #modernart #beaglesandramsay #wordsmith #artisinspiring #poemsdaily #micropoetry #spilledinkpoetry #designandpoetry #poemsofig

Plants by Olive Senior Plants are deceptive. You see them there looking as if once rooted they know their places; not like animals, like us always running around, leaving traces. Yet from the way they breed (excuse me!) and twine, from their exhibitionist and rather prolific nature, we must infer a sinister not to say imperialistic grand design. Perhaps you've regarded, as beneath your notice, armies of mangrove on the march, roots in the air, clinging tendrils anchoring themselves everywhere? The world is full of shoots bent on conquest, invasive seedlings seeking wide open spaces, matĂ©riel gathered for explosive dispersal in capsules and seed cases. Maybe you haven't quite taken in the colonizing ambitions of hitchhiking burrs on your sweater, surf-riding nuts bobbing on ocean, parachuting seeds and other airborne traffic dropping in. And what about those special agents called flowers? Dressed, perfumed, and made-up for romancing insects, bats, birds, bees, even you don't deny it my dear, I've seen you sniff and exclaim. Believe me, Innocent, that sweet fruit, that berry, is nothing more than ovary, the instrument to seduce you into scattering plant progeny. Part of a vast cosmic program that once set in motion cannot be undone though we become plant food and earth wind down. They'll outlast us, they were always there one step ahead of us: plants gone to seed, generating the original profligate, extravagant, reckless, improvident, weed. đŸ–€ #SentimentalSaturday #Sentiment #Poetry #PoetryCommunity #PoetryLovers #InteriorDesign #Interiors #DesignAndPoetry #Wilmslow #Cheshire #CheshireLifeMag #CheshireFlowers #Plants #LavenderTreeInteriorDesign

Design and Poetry | 7. “I think I try with my poems to create a beginning space,” said the US poet Alice Notley. "I always seem to be erasing and starting over, rather than picking up where I left off, even if I wind up taking up the same themes. This is probably one reason that I change form and style so much, out of a desire to find a new beginning, which is always the true beginning.” . Those constant changes in form and style are the result of Notley’s experiments with new ways not only of writing poems but of presenting them visually, The concrete poets of the 1960s conducted similar experiments, but Notley’s work also alludes to the calligrams, text arranged to create an image that relates to its meaning, made by early 20th century avant garde poets, including Guillaume Apollinaire in France and JosĂ© Juan Tablada in Mexico. . Born in Bisbee, Arizona in 1945, and raised in Needles, California, Notley was described by David S. Wallace in The New Yorker as “one of the singular voices in contemporary American poetry”. A rare woman among the men who dominated late 20th century US poetry, she has used her work to present an uncompromisingly realistic portrait of issues such as pregnancy and childbirth that are seldom explored by her male peers. The urgency of Notley’s descriptions is accentuated by the idiosyncratic presentation of the words in picture poems like this one, For the Ride, which was published in 2020 and begins: “You’ll have to decipher what’s going on, as it happens. Just like I did.” . #design #designandpoetry #graphicdesign #alicenotley #apollinaire #fortheride @nationalpoetryday

Design and Poetry | 6. One of her books was printed on slender sheets of aluminium, another on coffee filter paper and a third on bespoke paper that took seven years to make in a Japanese mill. She has made very big books, and very small ones, the tiniest of which are about the books she designed herself. Remarkable though all of the books made by the magnificent Dutch designer Irma Boom are, one of the finest was an early commission, and brush with poetry, the SHV Think Book 1996-1896, which celebrates the centenary of the Dutch industrial conglomerate, SHV. . Blessed with an unusually empathic client, whose only request was that she should “make something unusual”, Boom devoted seven years of work to the book. The finished object sports 2,136 pages, weighs 3.5 kilos, boasts eight bookmarks, but is devoid of a contents page, index and page numbers, because She wants readers to dip in and out of it, rather than to chart the company’s history chronologically, in the conventional way. The book was so challenging to print that its printer had to stop all other work for three months in order to finish it. . There are two editions, English and Chinese. The former consists of 4,000 copies and a white cover, and the latter of 500 copies with a black cover. (White is the colour of death in Chinese culture.) Every element of the SHV Think Book is exceptional, though my favourite is Boom’s playful treatment of the page edges, which allowed her to indulge her love of poetry. When the pages are flipped from left to right, an image of a tulip field appears on their edges, as does a line from a poem - De Bolero van Ravel, or Bolero by Ravel, by the 20th century Dutch poet, Gerrit Achterberg - when they are flipped from right to left. . #design #designandpoetry #graphicdesign @irma_boom_amsterdam #shvthinkbook #gerritachterberg @nationalpoetryday

Design and Poetry | 5. There are lots of reasons why John Cooper Clarke is known as the “punk poet”. One is that despite starting out in the mid-1970s as a performance poet in Manchester folk clubs, he soon moved on to touring with the Sex Pistols, Buzzcocks, Joy Division, Siouxsie and the Banshees and other punk bands. Another is that his words, and his trenchant delivery of them, were - and still are - steeped in punk’s fury at the callousness, greed and anomie of Margaret Thatcher’s Britain. . Then there is the deftly designed iconography of Clarke’s appearance - a lankier version of Patti Smith in her thrift store men’s suits, white shirts and battered Chelsea boots topped by a wildly spiky mop of black hair - and of his record covers. The two coalesced brilliantly in Clarke’s staccato silhouettes as he strode, jumped, ran and vamped across the front and back of his 1982 album, Zip Style Method, designed by the Polish art director, Roslav Szaybo. . Clarke stopped performing for many years after the album’s release, describing his life in the 1980s, when he was a heroin addict, as “a feral existence
hand to mouth”. Although he performed at New Order’s Music for Miners benefit concert in 1984. Clarke resumed writing and performing in the 1990s, and has been staunchly supported ever since by younger musicians, as well as friends from the punk era. His charm and talent have made him a beloved figure, cited by Elton John as one of his favourite poets. Few people have been more successful at introducing poetry to a new audience than John Cooper Clarke, because of, rather than despite his comic turns playing the cookie monster in a couple of Sugar Puffs ads. . #design #designandpoetry #graphicdesign @johncooperclarke #roslavszaybo #zipstylemethod #cookiemonster @nationalpoetryday

Design and Poetry | 4. A Benedictine monk in dark glasses and flowing robes must have looked just as incongruous at Signals Gallery, the ICA and other avant garde haunts in 1960s London, as an authority on the beat movement would have done in the calm of Prinknash Abbey in the Gloucestershire countryside. Yet Dom Sylvester HouĂ©dard belonged to both worlds as a leading concrete poet of the era, who had joined the Benedictine community at Prinknash after graduating from university in 1949, and being ordained as a Catholic priest a decade later. . HouĂ©dard was lucky in that Prinknash was run by an unusually enlightened abbot, Wilfred Upton, who encouraged him to pursue his passion for experimental poetry, specifically into the relationship between the physical forms of the words in poems and their meaning. In the early 1960s, HouĂ©dard started to publish the poems he typed on his Olivetti Lettera 22 typewriter placing him at the forefront of the concrete poetry movement. He collaborated with artists such as Gustav Metzger and Yoko Ono, and the composer John Cage. HouĂ©dard's poems became increasingly abstract as he focused on the visual form of the typewritten characters. . By the late 1960s, he was exhibiting his visual poetry, or typestracts, internationally, and in 1971 he staged a solo show at the Victoria & Albert Museum. Yet he continued to fulfil his commitments to Prinknash Abbey and to pursue his interest in other faiths, Tibetan Buddhism, particularly. HouĂ©dard also became active in the Vatican’s efforts to modernise Catholicism during the 1960s. From the mid-1970s he spent more of his time working on such issues until his death in 1992. . #design #designandpoetry #graphicdesign #domsylvesterhouedard #concretepoetry #prinknashabbey @nationalpoetryday . Design and Poetry | 3. “This series is an attempt to introduce contemporary poetry to the general reader by publishing some thirty poems by each of the three modern poets in a single volume,” read the text on the back of each slender paperback in the original Penguin Modern Poets series of books. . Launched in 1962 with poems by Lawrence Durrell, Elizabeth Jennings and R.S. Thomas in the first book, Penguin Modern Poets included an eclectic collection of poets from crusty, anti-modernists like Kingsley Amis, to three Beats - Gregory Corso, Lawrence Ferlinghetti and Allen Ginsberg - and their scouse counterparts, the Liverpool Poets, represented by Adrien Henri, Roger McGough, Brian Patten. Promising though Jennings’ inclusion seemed, she was one of only four women to be featured in the first eighteen books. The other fifty poets were men. . Disappointing though it was in terms of gender diversity, Penguin Modern Poets was a triumph of 1960s graphic design. It was among the first new series of Penguin paperbacks to be introduced after the arrival of the Italian art director, Germano Facetti, in 1961. His brief was to modernise Penguin’s design identity, and he assembled a group of dynamic, young designers to help him to do so. For Penguin Modern Poets, Facetti adopted a typographic grid, devised by the Polish designer, Romek Marber, with the title of the series printed in capitals, and the poets’ names in upper and lower case letters in the Univers typeface. The front and back of each book featured the striking white images of photograms on plain black backgrounds. The design of books was entrusted to three of the young designers Facetti had hired: Peter Barrett, Roger Mayne, and Alan Spain. . Penguin Modern poets was a roaring success, which continued until the mid-1970s. Each book was reprinted several times and as the series evolved, so did its design, sticking to a grid, but eventually using colour photographs of lichen, crystals and other natural phenomena, rather than the original black and white. . #design #designandpoetry #graphicdesign #germano facetti #romekmarber @penguinbooks @penguinukbooks #penguinmodernpoets @nationalpoetryday

Design and Poetry | 2. "I’m involved with a revolution that’s going to change the form of the book,” said the poet, N. H. (Norman Henry) Pritchard, in an interview in 1978. "I’m not sufficiently satisfied with a poetic revolution. I’m concerned with the revolution that involves the transformation of the book itself.” . Pritchard, who was born in New York in 1939, is renowned as one of the most formally inventive and influential poets of the 20th century. Believing that the impact and interpretation of poetry could be refined and enhanced by being reflected in the visual form of letters and words, he conducted extensive experiments in the 1960s and early 1970s by designing esoteric ways of using typography, spacing and other visual components of a conventional printed poem in books, including The Matrix Poems: 1960-1970, and Eecchhooeess, published in 1971. . Other writers were experimenting with different interpretations of concrete poetry and visual poetry at the time, but Pritchard was equally committed to using sound in recordings of jazz poetry to make it more evocative of the rhythms of daily life. He was also a leading figure in Umbra, a group of avant garden Black writers living in the Lower East Side. By the early 1970s, Pritchard was experimenting with chanting, speaking in tongues and other forms of mysticism. He then stopped publishing his work and moved to Pennsylvania, where he died in 1996. . #design #designandpoetry #nhpritchard #visualpoetry #concretepoetry #sonicpoetry #transrealism @nationalpoetryday . Design and Poetry | 1. As it is National Poetry Day on Thursday 7 October, this week’s posts will be about different interpretations of the relationship between two of my favourite things - design and poetry - starting with an adroitly designed book of the work of one of my favourite poets, the brilliant Denise Riley. . Now in her seventies, Denise Riley has with many different publishers over the years, starting in the 1970s with the independent poetry press, Street Editions, and with the feminist press, Virago, in the early 1980s. In recent years, Picador, part of the Pan Macmillan group, has published some of her work in books designed by Neil Lang, including this 2019 edition of her Selected Poems. . At first glance, Lang’s cover design - a delicate abstract pattern of matt gold foil on a cream matt cover with a serif typeface in black - looks surprisingly conventional for as powerful and incisive a poet as Denise Riley. But as you turn the pages, the gold comes to seem like a celebration of her work, and the cover’s discretion focuses your attention on her writing free from expectations engendered by figurative symbols or vivid colours. It also enhances the impact of the occasional layouts in which the lines of poems are printed vertically, rather than horizontally. . #design #designandpoetry #graphicdesign #bookdesign #deniseriley #picadorbooks @nationalpoetryday

3/6: This is the last poem of self-doubt and confusion in this set. I think about these first three pieces as giving self-doubt a voice, letting it speak its insecurities, that was those points can be addressed in the next half of the set. I think of this as the pessimist’s confession while the next three will be the optimists’e goals. It might sound a little nuts, but this design manifesto assignment really got me thinking. I talked more about the motivation behind these pieces in the previous post, so I’ll share a little more about the process this time. For the design, I picked my favorite PhotoShop brush of all time. While I know it’s not a design best practice, I’ve always had a soft spot for PhotoShop brushes and communities online that make resources for other artists. The brush was made by an artist who goes by ObsessiveDezign online and posted this lovely moon and stars brush back in 2010. She has a lot of fantastic resources like this one on her DeviantArt. I wanted to do a dark color palette for these first three since it’s a somber confession. They’re not supposed to be happy poems and they aren’t trying to be. The writing challenge I gave myself with these was to make the reading order flexible. I wanted each piece to make sense on its own or make sense with the pieces read from left to right or right to left. This took a lot of verbal tinkering. The next three will be a lot more uplifting and more about choosing creative optimism over all this self-doubt. I really wanted to create this day and night contrast, which made it necessary to give some of these trim doubts and fears stanzas. I’m excited to share the next three with you all—they’re a lot truer to how I feel about juggling the balance between writing and design.

Drawing All I’ve ever wanted to do is draw To design beautiful things Drawing is a kind of therapy On paper anything can happen All I’ve ever wanted to do is sew To bring my designs to life Sewing is like mission impossible In fabric there are unbreakable rules On paper I don’t have to worry There is no gravity #DESIGNBYBANNA #designandpoetry
