📚✨ I recently read "James" by Percival Everett, and wow—what a compelling reimagining of of Twain's "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn" from a new perspective! Everett gives us a fresh lens on Jim’s untold journey, making it not just a companion to the original but a stand-alone masterpiece that challenges and enriches. 🌟 Highly recommend for those who love provocative storytelling! The first Roberto Bolaño book I purchased and read was 2666. I fondly remember reading it late into the night while rocking my infant son to sleep (he’s now 15). That book struck a nerve, so I quickly bought The Savage Detectives, which plenty of people were talking about. But, for whatever reason, I didn’t read it. Instead I read everything else we had in English at the time, thanks to years of cultivating Bolaño’s work by New Directions and translator Chris Andrews. I loved so many of them. And yet I still didn’t read what many consider Bolaño’s greatest book. Over the past decade several more books by Bolaño have come out, including several of his ephemera. I’ve read them all. And yet . . . But, spurred on by our decision to do a Mookse and Gripes readalong, I have now finally read The Savage Detectives, translated by Natasha Wimmer. For the past nine weeks I have read, along with several insightful readers, around 75 pages per week and then enjoyed the comments on the weekend. I want to thank everyone who has participated in that readalong. I said it there and I’ll say it here: despite this being a very anticipated title by an author whose work has certainly resonated with me over the years, I’m not sure I would have had the stamina to read The Savage Detectives without that help. But I came to truly enjoy the book thanks to that help. Why did this Bolaño go so differently for me at first? For one, it was really hard to find my footing after we started Part 2, which forms the majority of the book. There Bolaño has a new character picking up the narrative every few pages, often sharing information that seems to have little to no relationship to what’s come before. It wasn’t that I was upset. I just lost steam, it felt, every time a new character came along. But, after a time, the perseverance—and my faith in Bolaño (it’s not like he has ever cared much about being clear) paid off. Now I look forward to all I will get out of it upon a reread! #robertobolano #thesavagedetectives #Savage2024 #translatedliterature #spanishliterature #literatureintranslation #reading #bookstagram #picadorbooks

🤍🕊️ Guernica ~ Dave Boling Solidly readable, this follows a Basque family before, during and after the brutal bombing of Guernica. It’s interspersed with a fictional imagining of Picasso creating his mural of the same name. Incidentally I remember crying when I first saw the Guernica painting in Madrid as a student. It’s heartbreaking to consider too how little has changed when it comes to attempts to bomb a whole people out of existence 💔 #aprilreads #readingchallenge2024 #bookworm #bookstagram #amreading #bibliophile #booklover #booktherapy #readersofinstagram #whatimreading #currentlyreading #currentreads #mycurrentreads #whatimcurrentlyreading #booklover #bookstagrammer #books #bookrecommendations #booksbooksbooks #bookcommunity #booknerd #booksofinstagram #bookworm #bookaddict #br #tbrstack #tbrlist #picadorbooks #guernica

Book Review : Station Eleven by Emily St John Mandel 📕 Kirsten Raymonde was a child actor in a stage production of King Lear when the leading actor, Hollywood star, Arthur Leander had a heart attack on stage and died. This was the night before the Georgia flu pandemic arrived and within weeks changed civilisation. Twenty years later Kirsten is travelling between post pandemic settlements as a member of a musical and acting troupe. When they arrived in St Deborah by the water, they meet a prophet who threatens the existence of the troupe. I enjoyed this dystopian novel that moved back and forth through time describing life before and after the pandemic and linking the connections between events and people. The book was well paced, gripping and curious. In several occasions I had to remind myself that the book was written 6 years before the Covid pandemic. The story highlights the importance of human connections, it’s also a story of hope and survival. Personally I have not read a lot of dystopian fiction and so whilst I recommend this for those who enjoy that genre, I also recommend it for those who enjoy well written stories of human connections. I will leave you with this quote which I think sums up the story pretty well. “Hell is the absence of people you long for.” #bookreview #stationeleven #emilystjohnmandel

‘The Lovely Bones’ movie was released in 2009 and for a while it was all I was talking about. An adaptation of Alice Sebold’s novel released seven years earlier in 2002. At the time I remember really wanting to read the book, however I never got around to it! When out today I stopped by the local charity shops and found a near pristine copy for 50p so decided to pick it up to be added to my never ending tbr pile! I’m also discovering that I have a tendency to pick up and buy Picador books… just an observation! (But seriously, @picadorbooks @panmacmillan hit me up!) Anyone’s ghost by August Thompson | 5✨ Anyone’s ghost follows two lonely boys, Theron and Jake, who quickly become friends whilst working at the same job. They share a bond for heavy metal, doing drugs, plus an unexpected love for one another! This book will tear your heart into a million pieces! The loneliness of both boys made me sympathise with them so much whilst the grittiness of their love story made it so hard to put the book down! This doomed love story was so raw and beautiful to read about but one thing I wished these boys would do is get some therapy!! An incredible debut by August, that has quickly made it as one of my favourite books! But do be warned, this book will hurt your heart!! Thank you so much @picadorbooks and @lailakazzuz for giving me the opportunity to read this masterpiece plus to @augustpthompson for writing a truly unforgettable book! Been missing in action and also missed the #TwosonTuesday post last week. No excuses! Let bygones be bygones and let’s look ahead. Who is looking forward to the Shortlist announcement of the #InternationalBookerPrize 2024? Coming up Tuesday April 9th and let’s hope the two I read - and the one I hope to read - make it. In the interim hoping to finish this read #OrdreduJour / #TheOrderofTheDay by French writer and film director, #EricVuillard. Translated from the French by #MarkPoliizzotti. “Aphoristic tableaux from the lead-up to the second world war build into a dazzling work of black comedy and political disaster” says The Guardian . The book takes the form of a series of historical tableaux occurring in the lead-up to the second world war. ‘The Order of the Day’ won 2017’s Prix Goncourt for fiction, and is described by the UK publishers as a “novel”, but it stretches the definition of that word a long way. In French it calls itself a récit – an account – and is really a historical essay with literary flourishes. ( The Guardian). This is not a book I’d easily pick up but the brother in law has recommended it highly, so I thought I’d take advantage of his presence to discuss (all) what I won’t understand. Do you like to read WW2 related titles?

I had a really good focus for reading during March and to spend less time on my phone, which really paid off as it was my best month so far this year! I read so many great books and as it was International Women’s Month I read mainly books by female authors. As it was also St. Patrick’s Day last month, I read quite a few Irish authors too. I also saw three Oscar films, so it was a really great month overall. 📚🎬 How was your March? 📚🎬 #glenjenswrapups

#TwoForTuesday - Douglas Stuart edition 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿💘 I’m sure by now most of you will have heard of Shuggie Bain and Young Mungo but I will always take any opportunity I can get to gush about these books. Shuggie and Mungo are characters that have a place in my heart forever and these books are honestly just so powerful. Shuggie Bain is the story of Shuggie, a lonely and soft working class boy trying to survive his childhood in 1980s Glasgow decimated by Thatcher’s policies. Shuggie’s mother is a chaotic alcoholic, with her addiction and mood swings threatening the security of her family. While Shuggie’s older siblings are able to find ways to escape, Shuggie is left trying to care for his mother. Young Mungo is the story of Mungo, a 15 year old working class Protestant struggling with his identity in the hyper-masculine and violent East End of Glasgow. Mungo’s life is forever changed when he meets James, a young Catholic boy living on the estate. Mungo and James cling onto each other despite the sectarian divide and quickly fall in love, planning their escape from the violence. Devastating and raw in their own unique ways, Shuggie Bain and Young Mungo are not easy or quick reads. But they are truly important and incredibly well-written reads that will tear you apart and then piece you back together again.

The Road - Cormac McCarthy (2006 by Vintage)
🏷 IDR. 100.000
Kondisi bekas masih sangat baik
.
Genre: Fiction
.
Summary📜
A searing, post apocalyptic novel destined to become Cormac McCarthy’s masterpiece.

A father and his son walk alone through burned America. Nothing moves in the ravaged landscape save the ash on the wind. It is cold enough to crack stones, and when the snow falls it is gray. The sky is dark. Their destination is the coast, although they don’t know what, if anything, awaits them there. They have nothing; just a pistol to defend themselves against the lawless bands that stalk the road, the clothes they are wearing, a cart of scavenged food—and each other.

🌟MARCH WRAP UP🌟 I have managed to read more books than ever this month. Reading a couple of slimline books has definitely helped, along with my first audio book. I have been promising myself I would try audio books for a while now but was convinced I wouldn’t be able to concentrate but I was proved wrong. I will be writing a review on my experience for my grid soon. I listened to Yellowface and it was a success! The Paper Palace was my #neglectedfaithfuls read for this month, which I read with a lovely group of bookstagrammers. It’s actually a really tough call to choose my favourite book for March, so I’m choosing two books. The first being Fyneshade. A superb, Victorian gothic thriller, which kept me gripped the whole way through. My review is already on my grid. The other book is Sandwich. Another brilliantly written book by the inimitable Catherine Newman. Both touching and hilarious, it had me crying with laughter at one point. Review to follow. *The Paper Palace by Miranda Cowley Heller @vikingbooksuk @mirandahellerauthor #neglectedfaithfuls read 📚Before The Coffee Gets Cold by Toshikazu Kawaguchi @picadorbooksuk @kawaguchi.coffee *The Saturday Place by Alice Peterson @bedfordsq.publishers @alicepeterson39 *Sandwich by Catherine Newman @alison_is_reading @doubledayukbooks @catherinewman Publication date: 6th June *The Story Collector by Iris Costello @penguinrandomhouse @iriscostellowords *Fyneshade by Kate Griffin @viperbooks @kateagriffin *Eliza Mace by Sarah Burton & Jem Poster @duck_books @sarah_burton_author @jem_poster_author 🎧Yellowface by Rebecca F Kuang @boroughpress @kuangrf Audio Book *Sisterhood by Cathy Kelly @harperfictionpr @harperfiction @cathykellybooks *[PR-AD Product] #marchwrapup #marchreading #newpost #thesaturdaypalace #bedfordsquarepublishers #alicepeterson #romancebooks #sisterhoodbook #cathykelly #harperfictionpr #elizamace #sarahburton #jemposter #duckworthbooks #thepaperpalace #mirandacowleyheller #vikingbooksuk #beforethecoffeegetscold #picadorbooks #toshikazukawaguchi #sandwichbook #catherinenewman #doubledaybooks #yellowface #rebeccakuang #boroughpress #fyneshade #kategriffin #viperbooks

A family went on vacation on an island called Saint X. They were rich, had fine things, their first daughter was in her first year in Princeton. Their second daughter although a bit peculiar, was loved and appreciated by her big sister. On the island they were having fun, enjoying the sun and all the perks the island was providing. Everything was supposed to be great except for one fact, after a few days the first daughter was found dead in a very tragic way. What happened? Who would do such a thing? This is the plot of Saint X. I admit that not all parts of this book were good, the author tried too hard regarding some subjects. All in all, it was a good read and I'm really enjoying the TV Show at the moment. . . . . . #JustRead #JustFinishedReading #JustFinished #SaintX #AlexisSchaitkin #PicadorBooks #Book #Books #InstaBooks #InstaReads #InstaReader #BookCommunity #BooksBooksBooks #Bookstagram #BooksOfInstagram #Bookstagrammer #BookLover #BookAddict #BookNerd #BookPorn #BookCover #CoverPorn #BookCollector #ReadABook #Reading #Reader #ReadersOfInstagram #ReadBooks #BookGram #Bibliophile

Ey up Bookstas, now I must admit this is probably one of my least favourite book covers ever. It's not because I'm some raging homophobe that can't stand the sight of two men kissing, no no crack on lads. It just looks really sweaty and sloppy and gives me the ick but to be fair I generally can't stand the sight of people kissing. A couple right in front of me had a lil smooch in far too close proximity to my face at the Skindred gig last week and I nearly gipped. : Anyway, luckily we don't judge books by their covers DO WE 👀 And there's no doubt that Douglas Stuart is a fantastic writer worthy of his accolades. The phonetic transcription (oi oi - I totally googled what the term was for when writing in dialect is called, also called eye dialect apparently!) is on point and very effective in helping tell the story of people on the breadline in Glasgow. : It's a pretty heart-wrenching read as all the characters - who are brilliantly written and can be vividly imagined - are struggling in some way and are either being mistreated or doing the mistreating. Vulnerable people can be so easy to take advantage of and it makes for uncomfortable reading in parts, but there's also touching and human aspects such as the way Mungo remains sensitive in a cruel world. : It's a story about love, being gay, adversity, deprivation and navigating the world when you're just a bit different. One element of it gave me One Day vibes, so if you're on that hype at the minute it could be one to consider. : What did you think of this one if you've read it? : #bookstagram #booklover #bookworm #bookstagrammer #bookish #bookaddict #bibliophile #instabook #booksofinstagram #readersofinstagram #bookaholic #booksbooksbooks #bookphotography #bookreview #bookcommunity #bookblogger #instabooks #booklovers #igreads #bookrecommendations #yorkshirebookstagrammer #youngmungo #youngmungoreview #douglasstuart #picador #picadorbooks #independentbookshop #4starbook #4starbookreview

Dear people these beauties are the UK editions of Before Your Memory Fades and Before We Say Goodbye (books 3 and 4 in the Before The Coffee Gets Cold series) by Toshikazu Kawaguchi. I liked and really liked books 1 and 2 so I want to continue the series. These are Japanese books about a cafe in Tokyo where you can go back in time but you need to return to the present before the coffee gets cold. Every chapter is a story either about the cafe's owners, regular costumers or the people that visit the cafe in order to travel back in time. I will be reading the next book in the series for the Final Book Support Group readathon @thefinalbooksupportgroup that is happening this week. Hi ✨ Polly speaking, and it’s book review time! I really had a lot of trouble reviewing this book, with its different short stories that ranged quite a bit in my enjoyment factor. This book got me bored on some parts and made me cry and had me fully engaged in others. But in the end it had a beautiful take-away that I did not really see coming. 📗: Adam Kay - This is Going to Hurt 🧠: Where to begin with this one? This is Going to Hurt is a collection of diary entires written by a junior doctor whilst they completed their medical training in the National Health Service. It exposes the injustices and abuses within the system - working horrific amounts of overtime without pay, lack of regular sleep and breaks, insufficient amount of training to perform life-altering surgeries, dealing with angry and impatient patients - in an gripping and yet surprisingly funny way. It shed light onto the difficulties of entering a profession that is both extremely necessary and yet overlooked and undervalued. Maybe, above all, it is a witty book. It finds the light in practically all situations (many of which seem to be over the operating table or amidst a choc-a-bloc A&E ward). Framed with the pessimism inherent to a collapsing system, the fun comes through as vital relief and makes me wonder: how could someone ever do this job?! It does make necessary yet rare admissions of sadness, guilt, and powerlessness that are heart-breaking. I do think if you live in the UK, it should be a necessary read not only for the depiction of the trials that junior doctors face daily, but to show the lack of attention paid to this sector by the Government. It holds our leaders to account. Even though over a decade has passed since the entries were documented, the NHS has not improved - underpayment is still strive, strikes are continuous, overcrowding in A&E and extreme wait times occur regularly. So this text is still incredibly applicable to today’s society and I am glad it has sparked the conversations it has, at least to highlight the brilliant work done by our junior doctors.

📖 Last week I read If I Survive You, Jonathan Escoffery’s critically acclaimed debut. We read this one for my IRL book club and it was a great discussion! . The linked stories in this book focus on a Miami-based family hailing from Jamaica. The youngest son Trelawny is the center of many of the stories and we follow him from his childhood through his college years and beyond. He is torn between cultures and struggling to find his place in a society that refuses to recognize him. . If I Survive You is billed as a collection of short stories but reads like a novel. This family’s immigrant story is both devastating and beautifully detailed. Escoffery is a brilliant writer and definitely one to watch! . What was the last debut that you loved? 📖 . . . . #bookstagram #bibliophile #bookworm #booknerd #alwaysreading #gimmeallthebooks #ifisurviveyou #jonathanescoffery #picadorbooks #debutauthors #njbookstagrammers #dogearedstyle #literarylady #gardenstatereaders #willbrakeforbooks #booklover #cantstopwontstop #newbookwhodis #wellreadwoman #somanybookssolittletime #ispentmywinterreading #booksbooksbooks #literarylover #shortstories #agirlandherbooks #fanoffiction #bookclubreads

🌟MARCH HOPEFULS🌟 Here I am, full of the joys of Spring with my book stack of hopefuls for this month! I have recently finished Fyneshade and loved it. My review will be on my grid next week. Although a lover of historical fiction books, I’ve never been particular drawn to dark, Victorian, gothic, storylines but this was a great read. Have you read it? What were your thoughts on it? I am currently finishing off Sisterhood. A lovely book about two sisters who have hit a crossroads in their lives. I am looking forward to seeing how it will play out at the end. Watch this space for my review. The Paper Palace will be my #neglectedfaithfuls read for this month. I will be reading it with a lovely group of bookstagrammers. This has been on my shelf for way too long and I’m looking forward to finally reading it, after all the wonderful reviews I have seen for it on bookstagram. 📚*Maude Horton’s Glorious Revenge by Lizzie Pook @bookbreakuk @picadorbooks @lizziepook Publication date: 1 February 📚*Fyneshade by Kate Griffin @duck_books @sarah_burton_author @jem_poster_author Publication date: 7 March 📚*The Story Collector by Iris Costello @befordsq.publishers @alicepeterson39 Publication date: 14 March 📚*The Paper Palace by Miranda Cowley Heller @befordsq.publishers @alicepeterson39 #neglectedfaithfuls read 📚*Sisterhood by Cathy Kelly @harperfictionpr @harperfiction @cathykellybooks Publication date: 15 February Are any of your favs on my list for this month? *[PR-AD Product] #marchhopefuls #marchhopefulsstack #tbr #newpost #newbooks #fiction #fictionbooks #books #bookphoto #thesaturdaypalace #bedfordsquarepublishers #alicepeterson #romancebooks #sisterhood #sisterhoodbook #cathykelly #harperfiction #harperfictionpr #womensliteraryfiction #literaryfiction #elizamace #sarahburton #jemposter #duckworthbooks #historicalthrillers #historicalthrillerfiction #maudehortonsgloriousrevenge #lizziepook #picadorbooks

MR. PENUMBRA'S 24-HOUR BOOKSTORE by Robin Sloan⁣ ⁣ This was a pick I picked up at my library's book sale based on cover alone. It's cool, and it stands out, like the book itself. As a librarian, I'm also a sucker for any novel about books, librarians, bookstores, libraries... you get it. I wasn't expecting a twisty mystery and was pleasantly surprised. I don't want to give much away since I love to just allow a story to unfold as the author intended. The setting is a dusty, infrequently visited San Francisco bookstore. Clay, the newest night-shift clerk, is learning the quirks of his employer, Mr. Penumbra, and the visitors who borrow odd and eclectic tomes from the "way back list." Intrigued to learn more, Clay enlists his wealthy childhood friend and his genius Google employee girlfriend to figure out exactly what kind of activity this bookstore is a front for. Secret societies, conspiracy theories, cryptography, and the intersection of books and technology make this one a fascinating (and fun) read. ⁣ ⁣ #Mr.Penumbras24HourBookstore #RobinSloan #Fiction #BookReview #SanFrancisco #Bookstore #BooksAboutBooks #Mystery #bookstagram #Librarian #LibraryLife @RobinSloan #PicadorBooks @Picador

The Silver Linings Playbook. Book by Matthew Quick. [35]. The first 1/3 of the book was giving me boring vibes and it took me sometime to get used to the way it was written. Not even half way through I realised I was really enjoying it! It ended up being a nice, cute little read. It's a book about mental illness and recovery from it, written with a very light tone, ah and spoiler alerts, it does have a happy ending. #thesilverliningsplaybook #thesilverlining #matthewquinn #mentalillnessrecovery #mentalillnessawareness #lovestory #happyending #novel #booksofinstagram #picadorbooks #newyorktimesbestseller #bookworm

11. Before We Say Goodbye - Toshikazu Kawaguchi I am once again several books behind on here but I thought I better post something for World Book Day. The fourth in the 'Before The Coffee Gets Cold' series, if you followed my old account you will know I love these books. This wasn't my favourite but it was still a lovely read, really hoping the series continues. Original: "Sayonara Mo Ienai Uchi Ni" ("Before We Say Goodbye"), Part 4, Toshikazu Kawaguchi, 2021, English version ☕ Last part of the cafe series (for now). Back in Tokyo where we meet old and new characters. The way they have to deal with situations, missed chances and regrets is very touching. Original: "Omoide Ga Kienai Uchi Ni" ("Before Your Memory Fades") Part 3, Toshikazu Kawaguchi, 2018, English version ☕ The location has changed and we are now in a cafe called Donna Donna in Hakodate, on the island of Hokkaido, in the North of Japan. This is also a cafe where you can time travel. New location, same rules. We meet some characters from parts 1 and 2 again and learn about new situations. I love how the author writes about the different relationships (parents and child, friends, siblings, ...). Always touching and sometimes sad. This book destroyed me. Such a sad and moving story. It was really hard for me to accept all the situations happening here and from time to time I had to pinch myself and try my best to put me in someone else's shoes. Agnes is a mother of three, abandoned by her husband, who seeks comfort in alcohol. However, while she is "enjoying" her alcoholic stupor, her children are growing up and they are doing everything they can to escape that predicament. Not Shuggie though. Shuggie is the youngest, still trying to grasp the reality he is in, still trying to understand his one self and because he is the last one, he's the one who stays and tries his hardest to save his mom. However, at what cost? Douglas Stuart has crafted a masterpiece with this one. . . . . . #JustFinishedReading #JustRead #JustRead #ShuggieBain #DouglasStuart #PicadorBooks #EnglishLiterature #EnglishLit #BookerPrize #Book #Books #InstaBooks #InstaReads #InstaReader #BookCommunity #BooksBooksBooks #Bookstagram #BooksOfInstagram #Bookstagrammer #BookLover #BookNerd #BookAddict #BookPorn #CoverPorn #BookCollector #Bibliophile #BookGram #ReadersOfInstagram #ReadABook #ReadBooks #Reading
