Approaching Devil Island. Discovered by Nordenskjöld. Named after its iconic resemblance of the Devils two horns. Which I obviously have wanted to summit for a long time. Swedens first and last endeavour to Antarctica during the "Heroic Age of Exploration" was led by Otto Nordenskjöld (1901-1904). Their ship, Antarctic, was crushed by the ice. Its memory remains as it gave name to the Antarctic Sound. Which we now travelled through, southbound into the Weddell Sea. We were the only vessel on this side of the Antarctic Peninsula. Expeditionleader Dan had the day before described the level of the hike as challenging. My mother and I were up for the task! Nordenskjöld and his boys were also up for the task, except one that perished. Surviving by building a primitive stone hut and heating it with a stove fueled by penguin blubber. Meanwhile conducting valuable research. When rescued, they had 6000 Adelie penguin eggs stockpiled. Views from Devil Island 😈😍 January 28, 2023 -📍Devil Island, Antarctica 🇦🇶 ✨ The steep hike up Devil Island was totally worth it for the views of the floating icebergs and surrounding Antarctic Islands. ✨ Really gave a cool perspective with the ship of the vast landscape that surrounded us. ✨ I had mentioned in on of the pervious posts that most visitors by ship to the Antarctic Peninsula visit the Western side of the peninsula. Here on the eastern side visitors are less frequent. ✨ When I was talking to the expedition staff I was told Devil Island only sees about 5-6 ship landings a year. To put in perspective while we were on the eastern side of the peninsula there was only one other ship in the area (we never even saw it) but from the radars they were able to see there were 15 ships on the western side! ✨Although we saw different landscapes then most people do, it was cool that we were visiting the less visited part of the peninsula. ✨ Stay tuned for the next Antarctica 🇦🇶 post and follow for more travel content ☺️
Welcome to Devil Island 😈 January 28, 2023 -📍Devil Island, Antarctica 🇦🇶 ✨ Our first stop on our second day around the Antarctic Peninsula was Devil Island. ✨ Devil Island is a small ice-free island in the James Ross Island group near the north-eastern tip of the Antarctic Peninsula. ✨ Going into the trip I knew it was very wildlife oriented but I was pleasantly surprised with how many opportunities we ended up having to hike. Here on Devil Island we had one of these opportunities. ✨ The hike up the mountain was short and steep and did not have the most stable terrain but the views were definitely worth it. At the beginning on the way up there was a Skua that had a nest with young chicks and she was flying low making sure we didn’t get too close 😅 ✨ Slow and stead we made it to the top with some amazing views of the icebergs and sea around us. ✨ As I mentioned before Antarctic during its summer months are not as cold as you may think, I actually got so warm on the hike up I had to take my jacket off 🥵. After being unable to make our landing due to high swell the G Expedition steamed throughout the night to the very northwest portion of the Antarctic Peninsula, through Antarctic Sound and down into the Weddell Sea. It was a long and ambitious haul. We had the good fortunes of making a landing at Devil Island where we saw a colony of 15,000 breeding pairs! #thenumber1duck had a great time hanging out with her penguin pals and their chicks.
