The Leopard seal is an apex predator in Antarctica. It eats penguin, fish and krill. It is a fast, agile and very powerful swimmer. When they catch penguin, they flay the skin and feathers off by biting a piece of skin and slamming the penguin side to side until the skin separates from the fat and muscle beneath. It is not pretty to watch. They are armed with very large incisor teeth. A fearsome beast, to be sure. Nature can be cruel.
After a long time of trial and error, I am pleased to introduce Something Fishy ! Although they are still subject to change seeing as this is still the early stages of the designs I'm pretty happy with what I have now. Cove is a gentle giant, he's very chill but also sometimes very disconnected from his surroundings. He used to be a history teacher but left a few years ago to take care of his 2 adoptive sons (remora twins). Vic (full name Victoire) was a guy cove picked up in a bar thanks to his musical skills, they became close friends over time. He moved to New Yak City after being banned from his home town in France for several petty crimes. Shellby is mute and talks trough sign language, everyone in the band learned sign language after meeting them. They're very shy and introverted but in their own ways brings everyone closer. Holly is a very upbeat character that's always around to help despite this she's very mature and knows when to take things seriously. She's like a big sister to everyone. Sealvester (often simply called Vester) used to run a fish meat and shark finning cartel. Because of this he's very weary around Cove, which in the past had been a victim of a finning attempt (seen by his scars). Sealvester often acts aggressive around most people, or passive agressive at least. Note : their music is like a mix of Jamiroquai and Stevie wonder. 🇺🇸The Leopard Seal is a powerful predator of frozen water, a habit or preference known in animals and plants as pagophyly. Mostly related to Antarctic waters, its regular occurrence in some tide-water glaciers of the Patagonian and Fuegian fjords of Chile in mostly unknown. These pictures were taken in last April, during our last expedition to San Rafael Glacier. This is a piece I’ve been working on for a while. I wanted to make a mug for my dad that accomplishes two things: 1) give him a daily reminder of our trip to Antartica and 2) replaces his Dunkin Donuts mug. Replacing this mug has been something I’ve been trying to do since 2022, but I can never seem to make a comfortable handle in the style of the original. (see a post from Feb 2022 of my last attempt) I abandoned that handle and made a more conventional one. I included the pics and videos that served as inspiration for this mug. I can’t wait to give it to him on Father’s Day. It’s supposed to be a surprise, but I have a sneaky feeling my mom has already told him about it. (Neither are on IG, so this post won’t spoil any surprises, in case he’s still in the dark.)

As mentioned previously, Paradise Bay never ceased to mesmerize us with its countless magical encounters. Now, delving into my series on seals, I recount another remarkable encounter from that day: a fierce predator, the leopard seal. A mere glance at its teeth made it clear that it was not a creature one could approach for a friendly petting session. We've been told that the teeth of leopard seals bear a striking resemblance to those of sharks. Leopard seals are inherently curious creatures and are therefore unafraid to approach closely from zodiacs, even sometimes biting them (fortunately for us, no flat zodiacs during our expedition). However, the one we encountered seemed more interested in basking in the sun and occasionally yawning in our direction. We were incredibly fortunate to be on the Antarctic Peninsula, around the Danger Islands, at the time of year when the young #adeliepenguin are out on mass learning to survive in the water. This Gentoo penguin is, justifiably, looking quite startled and concerned to find itself in the jaws of a prowling Leopard seal in Antarctica. It did not end well for the penguin. It is usually a zero-sum game between predator and prey in the unforgiving waters of Antarctica. Leopard seals are an apex predator in these waters, but they have to look over their shoulder for Orca who are the ultimate apex predator and fear nothing in the ocean.

BITÁCORA ANTÁRTICA 2024 Día 8️⃣, 28 de marzo. Este día fuimos a Foyn Harbour y continuábamos con un mar calmo lo que nos permitió realizar actividades. Primero hicimos un paseo en zodiac y otra vez el mar plagado de ballenas , muchas focas leopardo y de Weddell, luego fuimos a bucear un barco ballenero hundido en 1915 el GUVERNOREN , parte de este sale del agua y lo demas va bajo la superficie hasta 24 mts. de profundidad. Ahí encontramos mucha vida como anémonas de colores , estrellas de mar, nudibranqueos y un sinfin de restos del naufragio como esqueletos de ballenas. Fue sin duda el mejor buceo del viaje! También nos toco ver deslaves de grandes bloques de hielo, el sonido era impactante. Este fue otro gran día en Antártica. #antartica #antarctica #shipwreck #icediving #leopardseal
