. Artist Showcase Crabtree Sessions Presents ~ Claire Hawkins ~ Sun May 26th Her latest EP ‘The Name’ mixes the traveling singer/songwriter’s folk-rock influences with her modern pop sensibilities. Written across Berlin, Dublin, and New York City, the songs’ themes are as eclectic as the cities that inspired them. Hawkins celebrated the release with dual EP launch shows at Whelan’s in Dublin and Mercury Lounge in New York City, as well as an Ireland and UK tour, sponsored by Journey Instruments. Earlier in 2023 she completed the prestigious Odyssée Artist-in-Residence Program, where she was funded by the French Ministry of Culture and the Association des Centres Culturels de Rencontre to spend a month in Southern France working on an original songwriting project. The residency culminated in a concert and artist talk for the local community at Le Théâtre Jean Piat. In addition to her extensive performance schedule, Hawkins shares her music online in culture-forward travel videos, highlighting her experiences on the road as an independent musician. Her YouTube channel has amassed more than 1.5 million views and over 18,000 subscribers from all over the world. Graduate of NYU’s Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music, Hawkins has released three EPs and multiple singles. An important map of the two provinces published a little over a decade after the English took New York City from the Dutch in 1664. It shows the Eastern Seaboard from Pennobscot south to Delaware Bay, with the cartography taken from the Jansson/Visscher ‘Belgii Novi’ map, although it omits most of Chesapeake Bay as that area was detailed on another new map. On the reverse is a letterpress text, ‘The Description of New England’. Although the map is usually attributed to Speed, it was engraved by Francis Lamb for the 1676 edition of Speed’s ‘Prospect of the Most Famous Parts of the World’ (the first English world atlas, first published 1627), by which time Speed had been dead for nearly half a century. The Ladder. Perhaps for me the most stressful part for the job. Where is the lee? Is it rigged correctly? Is it broken? Is the crew in a good mood? Is it going to stretch? How are the conditions along side? Things that go through your head as the pilot boat matches the ships speed. When you are alongside you rarely think that you are both moving forward at 8 knots or so. That helps. And a OH dark thirty job is always fun too. Last week, in the early spring freezing rain, our Land-Margin Ecosystems course headed up the Bagaduce River Estuary. We’re using environmental DNA approaches to understand patterns in the presence of species such as the alewife, Atlantic Salmon, and American eel in the Bagaduce watershed.
