Small sketchbook view of houses and reflections seen from across the pond near the South End of Hampstead Heath. Drawn on Wednesday 8th May 2024, from 5.30- 6.38 pm, the first really warm afternoon for a long time. I had intended to focus on the reflections in the water (see last photo) but ended up without as much of the pond as I had wanted. Sketchbook drawing of Wassily Kandinsky's, Munich- Before the City, 1908, oil on card on board, Lenbachhaus, Munich at Tate Modern. (With photos of earlier stages of the drawing). Drawn in Tate Modern from 2.10- 4.10 pm on Saturday 27th April 2024 while visiting the Expressionists: Kandinsky, MĂźnter and the Blue Rider exhibition. I chose this landscape to draw from amongst Kandinsky's early works in the exhibition, which I find interesting even though I am a bit ambivalent about him. I liked the early stages of this drawing with the limited range of blues on the cream coloured paper, a combination I have enjoyed using before. But I decided to push it further, with the garish results visible here. "Now and Then". Holland Park, view from the "Dutch Garden" with the Belvedere of the Belvedere Restaurant, amongst trees. Drawn on Wednesday 24th April 2024 from 4.05 - 6.17 pm. The sky was overcast for most of the time, but the sun came out as I finished, illuminating this little architectural feature beautifully, although because this is a line drawing it didn't matter about the dullness of the afternoon. Perhaps it even helped. A nostalgic moment for me. So many times have I sat in this place, but never drawn here before. Reading the inscriptions on the benches reminds me of many others who have passed this way. "Now and Then". Sketchbook drawing, done on Sunday 21st April 2024 from 12.33 - 2.10 pm. I have passed this statue (by Thomas Rudge 1871-1921), visible from Roseberry Avenue (opposite Sadlers Wells Theatre) on the way up to Islington many times over the years, and often admired it from a distance. Dating back to 1921, it commemorates local servicemen of both world wars, with several inscriptions on the base, including one referring to the "Naval Attack on Zeebrugge, St George's Day, Tuesday 23rd April 1918" and another to the "Finsbury Rifles Attacking Gaza, Tuesday 17th April 1917", which surprised me. I drew this in April, over one hundred years since this monument was dedicated, like the similar but slightly older one commemorating the Boer War which I drew at Highbury in March. (This one was also erected "by grateful fellow citizens" according to a long and hard to read inscription). These events seem so distant from the present. Newington Green with wintery trees and pigeons, looking towards the Mildmay Club, with Maggi Hambling's sculpture commemorating pioneering feminist author Mary Wollstonecraft to the right. A quick sketch, drawn on Wednesday 27th March 2024 from 11.36 am- 12.24 pm, quite a cold day, before it rained. This statue appeared on Newington Green a few years ago, putting the area on the map and creating a talking point. Mary Wollstonecraft (1759- 1797) was a local, one of several eminent residents of this area. (Later photos show inscriptions on the base.) It took me two goes to draw the complexity of the trees in this one as I had arrived too late to complete it on the Wednesday so I had to come back the next day. "Now and Then". Holland Park, the statue of Lord Holland amongst wintery trees. Drawn on Tuesday 19th March 2024 from 2.25 - 3.48 pm, I must have seen this statue many times from my childhood years onwards but never thought to draw it until now. So full of memories, I haven't been back here for years. Seeing it in winter, with the bare branches of the trees behind emphasises the melancholy, timeless aspect of such monuments. I was surprised to read that it was designed by G. F. Watts, but given this artist's life story this is really not so surprising even though I had never seen this mentioned before. (Information from Margaret Baker's Discovering London's Statues and Monuments, p.80, also mentioned in V. F. Gould's G. F. Watts.The Last Great Victorian, p.94.) "Now and Then". Highbury Corner, looking towards Highbury Fields. A memorial statue amongst wintery trees. A one hour sketch, drawn on Friday 15th March 2024 from 3.49 - 4.50 pm, as children were walking home from school across Highbury Fields at the end of the week. I must have passed this statue 45 years ago when I first arrived in Islington, to be more specific in Highbury, in 1979. It is familiar to me but I didn't know what it represented and I had never read the inscription before: "How sleep the brave who sink to rest, By all their country's wishes bless'd." In honour of ninety-eight Islingtonians who died for their country in the South African War 1899- 1903. Erected by their fellow townsmen. July 1905. "Now and Then". Hampstead Heath. A quick sketch, drawn on Monday 11th March 2024 from 1.45- 2.58 pm. Walking back from the Royal Free Hospital towards the Overground Station, a magnificent avenue of trees announces the approach to Hampstead Heath. I drew this familiar view of the entrance to the wooded hills of Hampstead Heath instead of climbing the path between the trees. It reminded me of the beginning of Dante's Inferno which I am currently reading, the famous opening words, "At one point midway on our path in life, I came around and found myself now searching through a dark wood, the right way blurred and lost." Moleskine sketchbook drawing of Francesca da Rimini by Ary Scheffer, 1835 in the Wallace Collection. (There are several paintings by this artist in the Wallace Collection, but this magnificently framed and strikingly composed large picture attracts the attention of every visitor to the room it is displayed in. In the same room hang the small landscapes of Decamps, which I drew a little while ago.) According to the 1968 catalogue, sixteenth edition, Scheffer acknowledged the influence of Flaxman on the design of this picture, which I can understand, but it is still quite surprising to me, not being an expert in this period. I started reading Dante's Inferno in a very good translation by Robin Kirkpatrick, with parallel Italian and English texts in order to understand more of this bizarre and seductive scene. It helped a bit, but I credit the artist for creating this compelling image, which I realised I had to draw. I feel that I am beginning to get to know the fascinating paintings and decorative arts on my very enjoyable recent visits to the Wallace Collection, which I started a year ago. Moleskine sketchbook drawing of Apollo and Daphne (cropped). Workshop of AndrĂŠ-Charles Boulle (1642-1732), Armoire (Wardrobe), c. 1700 with gilt-bronze scenes of Ovid's Metamorphoses- Apollo and Daphne. I recently visited the Wallace Collection hoping to draw Francesca da Rimini by Ary Scheffer, but found the room it was in was closed temporarily for cleaning and conservation. Fortunately I had a back-up plan to draw from the furniture of Boulle, which there is plenty of in the Wallace Collection. However, because I had arrived late I was only able to start my drawing on Thursday, so I returned the next day to complete it. Hence the two versions of this drawing in my photos. I quite liked the earlier version, but I'm glad I did finish this drawing properly. (I did come back the next week to draw the Ary Scheffer picture also.) This time I used a nice new small @moleskine watercolour sketchbook. It is very convenient. What a great afternoon - the welcome return of costume life drawing from @LondonDrawing. Four hours in the atmospheric @crypt_gallery drawing models @robinactormodel @modbodadrian @estherbunting as characters from the recent Frans Hals exhibition. It has been 4 years since the last one - I hope that it wonât be long until our next. And so good to meet up with old friends and share in the fun. I took my time as Iâm v out of practice, so only 4 images⌠1 is Robin as a Cavalier (not laughing here) A2 charcoal - about 50 minutes 2 is Esther as Hille Bobbe (aka the witch of Harlem) - she cackled and growled whilst we drew⌠A2 pen - about an hour? 3 and 4 are Adrian as a lute playing jester. Drawn at the Estorick Collection on Sunday 14th January 2024 from 2.28- 4.20 pm. Savena Landscape, 1929, etching. I enjoyed drawing this familiar composition by Morandi on my first visit to the Estorick Collection this year, in good company after a nice lunch in the @caffeestorick The sketchbook format doesn't quite correspond to the original. I like the very dense darkness of Morandi's tones. (This is one of two similarly dark and atmospheric prints in the collection. ) I used grey pens, but probably should have used black, which I have avoided for some time. Before I added the tone this drawing looked fresher and more volumetric perhaps. Still, I am glad to have recorded this print- I can imagine having the original hanging on a wall at home. That would be nice, but fortunately I live quite close to the Estorick Collection, so I can visit it when I want to with my membership card.
