#OnThisDay in 1821, Napoleon Bonaparte died. After his defeat at Waterloo in 1815, Napoleon was exiled to the remote island of St Helena because both the victors, and France, didn’t know what to do with him. He was imprisoned on the island by the British in a house called Longwood. Pictured here is a copy of his death mask, made in bronze. By the 19th century, it was common to make death masks of famous people and display them as objects in their own right. The original mask was made of plaster and would have been a direct impression of Napoleon’s face when he died in 1821. Winterhalter Wednesday! This week we are looking at one of my favourite pieces by Franz Xaver Winterhalter. ‘The First of May 1851’ is such a special and poignant painting as it shows Queen Victoria in her role as a Queen, wife and mother. On 1st May 1851 Queen Victoria famously opened Great Exhibition in Hyde Park. The exhibition was the brainchild of Prince Albert and was set up to showcase the advancement of industry and technology across both in Britain and across the world. Before the exhibition, Albert had felt insignificant against his wife’s high status so her presence not only helped launch the exhibition, but also showed how supportive and proud Victoria was of her husband. While Albert can be seen gazing towards the Crystal Palace, Queen Victoria is depicted holding her infant son, Prince Arthur, who was celebrating his first birthday. The Prince is being presented with a jewel casket by his godfather, the Duke of Wellington, who was celebrating his 82nd birthday on the same day. In return, the Prince is gifting the Duke lily of the Valley, a symbol of innocence and good luck. While the painting had been the queens idea, in her journal on 21st May, she wrote that 'Winterhalter did not seem to know how to carry it [the painting] out, so dear Albert with his wonderful knowledge & taste, gave W the idea'. While a few changes were made for aesthetic purposes, the painting depicts the historic day perfectly! Head over to the link in my bio to learn more about the great exhibition!

The Crypt in St Paul's is a wonderful half-lit subterranean space containing the tombs of the 'great and the good' from the past 300 years in Britain, not least the tomb of the architect of the cathedral itself Sir Christopher Wren (with a touching memorial to the masons who worked on the building) (pic 5), as well as painters John Everett Millais (pic 6) and JMW Turner, while the tombs of Admiral Lord Nelson (1+2) and the Duke of Wellington (3) take centre stage - the guide told us that Nelson, Wellington and Sir Winston Churchill are the only three people ever to receive state funerals in St Paul's, and that Churchill is not buried here, as he requested instead to be buried in his home village of Bladon in Oxfordshire. Our guide also told us that the mosaic floor in parts of the crypt were created by women prisoners at Woking Gaol (pic 4). An interesting fact about Nelson's tomb is that he is buried in the granite base and not the black marble sarcophagus on top which was made for Cardinal Wolsey but never used until it was added to Nelson's tomb. The Waterloo Gallery, used to celebrate the Duke of Wellington’s annual Waterloo Banquet, Apsley House, London (still the London residence of the 9th Duke). The large equestrian painting over the fireplace is “Charles I on Horseback with M de St Antoine” by Sir Anthony Van Dyck (1599-1641). The Waterloo Gallery was completed in 1830 and designed by Benjamin Dean Wyatt, as part of major refurbishments by the first Duke. The space is still used to display many pieces of the Duke’s substantial art collection. A stunning example of a Grenadier Guards officer’s uniform circa 1816 in full dress including splatter dashes . The coatee and epaulettes were worn by Ensign Daniel Tighe and are paired with period piece’s to create an amassing study. Tighe who as a seventeen year old was the second most junior Ensign in the Grenadier Guards at the battle of Waterloo. His Waterloo medal resides with the regiment at Wellington Barracks, London. This urn is part of the Prussian Service which was given to the Duke of Wellington by the King of Prussia after Waterloo. The service comprises 460 pieces and commemorates all the Duke’s famous battles, culminating with the victory over Napoleon in June 1815. The urn shows the Battle of Waterloo, in a 360 degree format, with the Duke of Wellington dominating the scene. Wellington is shown, incorrectly, on a white horse to heighten the dramatic effect as he greets Prince von Blücher, the leader of the Prussian Cavalry. Decorative tableware like the Waterloo Urn would have graced Wellington’s table as well as being put on display on side (or buffet) tables for his guests to admire.
